The Basawakkulama Wewa, also known as Abhaya Wewa, is recognized as Sri Lanka’s first reservoir mentioned in historical records.

  • Built during the reign of Prince Anuradha in the 6th century BCE
  • Later expanded by King Pandukabhaya (437–367 BCE)
  • Served as a vital water source for the flourishing capital, Anuradhapura

This engineering marvel not only sustained agriculture and settlements but also laid the foundation for Sri Lanka’s sophisticated irrigation heritage, a legacy that continues to inspire the world.
