VICTOR MELDER LECTURE

LECTURE TOPIC: THE ‘43 GROUP (ART COLLECTIVE)

Date & Time : Saturday 8 February, 3.30pm-4.30pm
Venue : Clayton Community Centre Theatre 9-15 Cooke Street, Clayton

The ‘43 Group was the pioneer Modernist art movement in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1943. Formed in Colombo as an association of like-minded artists, it went on to become a watershed moment for art not only in Sri Lanka but also across the subcontinent of southern Asia, including ties to Australia.

The 2025 Victor Melder Lecture will be presented by Dr Srilal Fernando, a graduate from the Faculty of Medicine in Colombo, and a consultant psychiatrist in Melbourne.

As an extension of the Victor Melder Lecture, a selection of artwork from Sri Lankan artists based in Melbourne will be available to view in the meeting rooms next to the Clayton Theatre from 1pm-3pm. Tea and coffee will be provided.
