Fernando<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-100740 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/dr-yanushi-delwera.png\" alt=\"Dr Yanushi Dullewe\u00a0Wijeyeratne\" width=\"452\" height=\"454\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-91835 size-thumbnail alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Tilak-S-Fernando-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"Tilak S Fernando\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Dr Yanushi Dullewe\u00a0Wijeyeratne\u00a0is the granddaughter of the late Dr Nissanka\u00a0Wijeyeratne\u00a0(<em>one-time Minister of Education and Justice of Peace in Sri Lank<\/em>a).\u00a0\u00a0Dr Yanushi Dullewe\u00a0Wijeyeratne works at St. George&#8217;s University Hospital in London as a Speciality Registrar and Fellow in Electrophysiology and Devices NIHR Clinical Lecturer. In 2022, she was awarded the highly competitive NIHR\u00a0(<em>National Institute for Health and Care Research<\/em>)\u00a0Clinical Lectureship in Cardiology at St George&#8217;s, University of London.\u00a0National Institute for Health and Care Research\u00a0Clinical Lectureships in Cardiology are highly sought after in the UK, with less than ten awarded\u00a0annually. In\u00a0such\u00a0circumstances, it is an honour for a Sri Lankan to receive such an award. She holds a double doctorate, having recently completed her PhD in\u00a0Cardiac\u00a0Genetics and\u00a0Stem\u00a0Cell models of inherited cardiac conditions at the world-renowned St George&#8217;s, University of London.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Background.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Dr\u00a0Wijeyeratne\u00a0was a past student at Colombo International School and had her junior school education at The British School and Bishop&#8217;s College in Colombo, Sri Lanka.\u00a0In 2008, she continued to maintain research during her clinical years at medical school, during which time her research took a more significant clinical focus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">She graduated in Medicine from the University of Nottingham in 2009 and gained membership in the Royal College of Physicians\u00a0<em>(MRCP<\/em>) in London in 2013. She had her general Cardiology training at St George&#8217;s Hospital before she commenced her research.\u200b \u200bThrough\u00a0\u2018<em>the\u00a0thrombosis and haemostasis<\/em>\u00a0<em>research group<\/em>\u00a0at the University of Nottingham,\u00a0guided by Professor Stan Heptinstall, she designed and conducted clinical research studies on antiplatelet drugs used in treating acute coronary syndromes. Through such research, she combined research with her clinical training, which stimulated her to enjoy the differences in the pace of work between frontline clinical medicine and research.\u00a0Subsequently,\u00a0she completed the academic foundation programme, which reinforced her previous experience in clinical research and allowed her to develop additional skills in clinical academia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Following her general Cardiology training at St George&#8217;s Hospital in 2020, she started her Cardiology subspecialty training in Cardiac Electrophysiology and Implantable Cardiac Devices at King&#8217;s College,\u00a0London. Having completed her PhD, she inherited cardiac arrhythmia<em>s<\/em>\u00a0(<strong><em>irregular heartbeat)<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em>at St George&#8217;s, University of London. She showed a keenness to continue her sub-specialisation as an Academic Cardiac Electrophysiologist. The St George&#8217;s NIHR\u00a0\u00a0Clinical Lectureship gave her the ideal opportunity to pursue both her clinical and research interests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">She developed her interest in research during her pre-clinical training at the University of Nottingham\u00a0before she was awarded the ACF.\u00a0There she delved into basic science research and investigated the presence of a\u00a0<strong><em>\u2018novel receptor in platelets<\/em><\/strong>.\u2019\u00a0Through this study, she learned fundamental basic science research methodology. She presented her findings to the broader scientific community. She published her first scientific manuscript as joint\u00a0accountability\u00a0first in 2008, and she continued to maintain active involvement in research during her clinical years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Academic Clinical Fellowship.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Dr Yanushi\u00a0Wijeyeratne\u00a0was initially awarded the St George&#8217;s Academic Clinical Fellowship in 2012. How did she manage the opportunity to facilitate her development as a young clinical academic? The ACF at St. George&#8217;s hospital not only specialises in heart disease with Professor Elijah Behr, but the hospital is one of the world-renowned\u00a0cardiac research groups. The presence of the hospital and university\u00a0on\u00a0the same\u00a0premises\u00a0helped her to engage in several research studies in harmony with her clinical training and implanting cardiac devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators\u00a0<strong><em>(<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>machines that send an electric pulse or shock to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>)<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in patients with heart rhythm abnormalities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">During her\u00a0ACF\u00a0at St George&#8217;s, she was allowed to contribute to clinical research studies, as well as design new research studies. Meanwhile, she was also able to further explore translational research and learn new skills in stem cell research, which eventually led to the study she embarked on for her PhD. She completed her primary medical training in the first eighteen months of the fellowship before commencing cardiology training at St George&#8217;s Hospital in 2014.\u00a0After her ACF, she was awarded a Clinical Research Fellowship at St George&#8217;s to embark on her PhD focused on cardiac genetics. Then she developed in\u00a0<em>vitro stem cell models<\/em>\u00a0to investigate inherited arrhythmia\u00a0(<strong><em>a<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>n abnormality of the heart&#8217;s rhythm\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>syndrome<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(namely\u00a0<em>Brugada Syndrome<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Long QT Syndrome<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In 2022, Dr Yanushi Dullewe\u00a0Wijeyeratne\u00a0was awarded the highly competitive NIHR Clinical Lectureship in Cardiology at St George&#8217;s,\u00a0the\u00a0University of London.\u00a0\u00a0She\u00a0specialises\u00a0in Cardiac Electrophysiology, which involves carrying out removal procedures to treat patients with cardiac arrhythmias.\u00a0<em>(<strong>Arrhythmia is an abnormality of the heart&#8217;s rhythm. The heart may beat too slowly, too quickly, or irregularly<\/strong>)<\/em>. These abnormalities form a minor inconvenience or discomfort potentially and become a\u00a0fatal problem, including heart block, palpitations and dizziness.\u00a0St. George&#8217;s Hospital enabled her not only to train in Cardiology, but the hospital is one of the largest treatment cardiac centres in the UK.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Dr Yanushi Dullewe\u00a0Wijeyeratne\u00a0is\u00a0able to reprogram patients&#8217; cells from skin biopsies into induced pluripotent stem cells\u00a0<em>(the cells responsible for generating contractile force in the intact heart<\/em>.) This process laid the groundwork for her to study patient-specific diseases in the laboratory\u00a0without subjecting the patient to a cardiac biopsy. Further, she was able to develop collaborations with the help of multiple international centres in Europe, the USA and Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Dr Yanushi Dullewe\u00a0Wijeyeratne\u00a0will be\u00a0able to reprogram patients&#8217; cells from skin biopsies into induced\u00a0<em>stem cells\u00a0<\/em>capable of giving rise to several different cell types and then differentiate these cells into stem cells that carry the same genotype as the patients from whom the original skin sample was obtained. NIHR Clinical Lectureship at St George&#8217;s has provided her with unparalleled opportunities to embark on exciting areas of research whilst training as an academic Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist linked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Dr\u00a0Wijeyeratne\u00a0is currently a\u00a0Specialty Registrar and\u00a0a\u00a0Fellow in Cardiac Electrophysiology and Implantable Cardiac Devices at London&#8217;s St George&#8217;s Hospital. The hospital is\u00a0one of the largest specialist tertiary cardiac centres in the UK.
