It is followed by the inner city suburb of\u00a0<b>Melbourne<\/b>\u00a0(137 countries), and the Sydney suburbs of\u00a0<b>Blacktown<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Maroubra<\/b>\u00a0(133 countries).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Many Sydneysiders would not be surprised that the inner city suburb of\u00a0<b>Haymarket<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; known for being the location of the city&#8217;s Chinatown and home to a large number of university students &#8211; records the highest proportion of overseas-born people among areas with more than 1,000 residents. Around 78 per cent of people in Haymarket were born overseas and come from a variety of countries, including 21 per cent from China, 17 per cent from Thailand, 11 per cent from Indonesia, and three per cent each from Malaysia and Korea.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">By contrast, the areas with the smallest proportion of overseas-born people (in areas of more than 1,000 people) include Aboriginal communities\u00a0<b>Cherbourg<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Yarrabah\u00a0<\/b>in Queensland, and\u00a0<b>Milingimbi\u00a0<\/b>in the Northern Territory.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">It must be noted that not including people born in Australia in the map doesn&#8217;t account for the 812,728 people (or 3.2 per cent of the Australian population) who identify as Aboriginal and\/or Torres Strait Islander.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">When it comes to language though, more than 350 different languages are spoken across Australia, including 167 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages identified by the Census, some of which appear in the map below.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The number of people who use a language other than English at home has increased by nearly 800,000 since 2016 to more than 5.5 million people. This is followed by\u00a0<b>Arabic<\/b>\u00a0with just over 367,000 speakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><b>Punjabi<\/b>, a language common in India and Pakistan, has seen the largest increase, with more than 239,000 people now speaking Punjabi at home, an increase of 80 per cent since 2016.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The most recent Census was also an interesting one for religion, finding 38.9 per cent of people in Australia now report having &#8220;<b>no religion<\/b>&#8221; (compared with 30.1 per cent in 2016) while 43.9 per cent record their religion as\u00a0<b>Christianity<\/b>\u00a0(it was 52.1 per cent in 2016), followed by\u00a0<b>Islam<\/b>\u00a0on 3.2 per cent,\u00a0<b>Hinduism<\/b>\u00a0on 2.7 per cent and\u00a0<b>Buddhism<\/b>\u00a0on 2.4 per cent.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Almost all of Australia&#8217;s top 10 most religious suburbs are located in remote areas, or in parts of Western Sydney with higher-than-average migrant populations.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><b>Search the map below to see what religions are most followed in your suburb.<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-102007\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/RELIGION-600x234.png\" alt=\" RELIGION\" width=\"600\" height=\"234\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">This map shows the top religions by suburb. Source: 2021 Census, ABS.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The island of\u00a0<b>Galiwinku,<\/b>\u00a0off the coast of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, tops the list for the most faithful, with 90 per cent of people reporting they are religious. A Methodist mission was established in the area in 1942, with around 47 per cent now following the Uniting Church but a high proportion (26 per cent) saying they follow Aboriginal traditional beliefs.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Many Western Sydney suburbs also show a strong commitment to faith, including\u00a0<b>Bungarribee<\/b>, where 34 per cent practice Hinduism,\u00a0<b>Elizabeth Hills<\/b>\u00a0(44 per cent Catholic),\u00a0<b>Mount Lewis\u00a0<\/b>(40 per cent Catholic),\u00a0<b>Girraween<\/b>\u00a0(52 per cent Hindu),\u00a0<b>Abbotsbury<\/b>\u00a0(53 per cent Catholic),\u00a0<b>Mount Vernon<\/b>\u00a0(58 per cent Catholic) and\u00a0<b>Carnes Hill\u00a0<\/b>(37 per cent Catholic). All of these suburbs except Mount Vernon have overseas-born populations higher than the Australian average of 27.6 per cent.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Also on the list is the Northern Melbourne suburb of\u00a0<b>Roxburgh Park<\/b>, where 34 per cent follow Islam; and\u00a0<b>Wurrumiyanga<\/b>, an Aboriginal community on the Tiwi Islands, the site of a former Catholic mission, where 82 per cent of people still say they are Catholic.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiBox-root css-exul89\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Diversity within &#8216;communities&#8217;<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In\u00a0<b>Harris Park<\/b>, the Australian suburb with the second-highest percentage of overseas-born people, the Indian-born community now makes up 45 per cent of the population, with 47 per cent also saying they practice the Hindu religion. Overall 75 per cent of residents were born overseas.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">But even though many residents were born in India, there is still a lot of diversity within the community, with residents speaking a wide variety of Indian languages: 15 per cent speak\u00a0<b>Gujarati<\/b>, 12 per cent speak\u00a0<b>Hindi<\/b>; and\u00a0<b>Punjabi<\/b>,\u00a0<b>Nepali<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Telugu<\/b>\u00a0speakers make up around 6 per cent each.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Demographer Dr Liz Allen from the Australian National University says the variety of languages shows how communities that some may think of as one group could be very diverse.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">&#8220;What&#8217;s so interesting about the diversity that we see in places, particularly in Western Sydney, is that even people from a particular country or a particular region, differ from each other.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">&#8220;So there&#8217;s a diversity, even among population groups that might, on the outside look very similar, there&#8217;s quite a lot of difference.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Dr Allen says it&#8217;s also worth noting some people might say they practice or identify with a particular religion but in reality, this may not be the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">&#8220;In many cases out there, what we cite in that religion question in the Census might reflect our upbringing; it may not reflect our &#8216;now&#8217;.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-h4 css-1lsygz7-MuiTypography-root\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">What we cite in that religion question might reflect our upbringing; it may not reflect our &#8216;now&#8217;.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><cite class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-subtitle2 css-19m3f46-MuiTypography-root\">&#8211; Liz Allen, Demographer<\/cite><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">&#8220;Where our religion is closely bound up with our culture, we might more often experience a feeling of compulsion that we need to say that we are a particular religion when we don&#8217;t practice it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">She says parents would often identify a particular religion for their children, and people were also more inclined to say they were religious after marriage because of ideals around family, but, as people get older they are more likely to say they are not religious.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiBox-root css-exul89\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The people behind the statistics<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Girraween resident Goverdhan, who was born in India, says he does not think religion plays a huge role in his community, although he does attend a nearby Hindu temple in Westmead. Source: Supplied \/ Charis Chang<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Goverdhan is one of the 7 per cent of locals who speak Telugu, a classical language of India still spoken in certain states, although he also understands and speaks Hindi, the common language of India.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Goverdhan says he started a Facebook page for the local Indian community because he wanted to share information on education, festivals and other news.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">&#8220;We all come from one place and we have common thoughts, and good things to share.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">He has lived in Australia for 14 years and said he has been able to further his career in information technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">&#8220;I have a good career here, it&#8217;s a nice community, a beautiful country and people, and a nice economy,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">&#8220;Australia is a multicultural country, we like all the culture, all the people.&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiBox-root css-exul89\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">England and English still dominant<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Across the country,\u00a0<b>England<\/b>\u00a0is the most common place of birth outside Australia, accounting for up to 4 per cent of people, followed by\u00a0<b>India<\/b>\u00a0(3 per cent), and\u00a0<b>China<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>New Zealand<\/b>\u00a0(both 2 per cent).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Other popular countries, making up 1 per cent of the population each, are the\u00a0<b>Philippines, Vietnam, South Africa, Malaysia, Italy<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Sri Lanka<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Around 72 per cent of Australians report speaking English at home.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_102010\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-102010\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-102010 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/england-e1665996458814-600x400.webp\" alt=\"How multicultural is your suburb? - By Charis Chang, Ken Macleod\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-102010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Around four per cent of Australians were born in England and 72 per cent speak English at home. Morgan<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Professor James Raymer from the Australian National University says many English migrants have been in Australia for a long time and are different to those from China and India, who were more likely to be more recent arrivals.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">&#8220;If you look at the age composition of migrants by country of birth, England has a lot of people in their 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, whereas India and China have hardly anyone in that age group.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">English-born populations are also much more spread out, with no areas in Australia hosting even 1 per cent of the total population. The areas with the most English-born people are\u00a0<b>Baldivis<\/b>, south of Perth, followed by the Sydney harbourside suburb\u00a0<b>Mosman<\/b>,\u00a0<b>Mornington<\/b>\u00a0in Victoria, and the Perth suburb of\u00a0<b>Rockingham<\/b>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MuiBox-root css-exul89\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The future of multiculturalism in Australia<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Another popular source of migrants has been\u00a0<b>Nepal<\/b>, which recorded the second-largest increase in numbers in the most recent census. Almost 70,000 extra people from Nepal have arrived in Australia since 2017, more than doubling the size of the population since 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Dr Allen says historically there has only been a small number of Nepali in Australia and this made the increase seem more substantial, but the increase may also reflect better economic conditions in Nepal which allow people to travel overseas and send their children to Australian universities.
