WHY NOT CLIMATE MEET IN \u00a0EGYPT \u00a0DISCUSS \u00a0POPULATION CONTROL? \u2013 By <\/span><\/span><\/b>N.S.Venkataraman<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

\"CLIMATE\"<\/p>\n

The Glasgow Climate Meet\u00a0\u00a0 ( COP 26 ) took place in 2021 \u00a0with much fanfare\u00a0 with \u00a0leaders of almost all countries pledging \u00a0to reduce and eliminate global emission as early as possible , to prevent global warming and \u00a0prevent climate crisis.\u00a0 The Glasgow Meet ended with high hope\u00a0 that\u00a0 world climate crisis would be overcome sooner or later and hopefully sooner than later.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, Egypt Climate Meet ( COP 27) is in progress with the concerns about global climate being not less\u00a0 than what was there in Glasgow Climate Meet.\u00a0 The ground reality is that practically nothing has been done in significant way to improve the global climate scenario \u00a0in the last one year and on the other hand, it has only further deteriorated\u00a0 due to various man made reasons and conflicts<\/span><\/p>\n

The world is already feeling the global climate crisis, \u00a0as global warming continue to take place with\u00a0 unpredictable climate changes\u00a0 and monsoon conditions. There is huge anxiety in the world today, as no one is able to predict the\u00a0 monsoon conditions and heat level in the different months with any reasonable level of accuracy.. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The situation is so desperate now that U N Secretary General\u00a0 at the COP 27 summit in Egypt\u00a0 said that the planet is fast approaching tipping points\u00a0\u00a0 and the climate crisis is approaching irreversible level.\u00a0 He went on to say with a sense of helplessness that \u00a0the world is facing\u00a0 stark choice and all countries\u00a0 now have to work together\u00a0 and he 1declared that the world have \u00a0to choose between\u00a0\u00a0 \u201c survive or perish\u201d\u00a0 conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

So\u00a0 far, globally , the highlight of the discussion \u00a0on climate crisis is that the use of fossil fuels like crude oil, coal should be drastically reduced and completely eliminated in the course of time.\u00a0 Further, the goal should be to replace fossil fuels like coal, \u00a0crude oil for the use as energy source or as feedstock\u00a0 by eco-friendly source such as renewable energy\u00a0 ( wind and solar) use of hydrogen and so on.\u00a0 While scientists are feverishly working to develop eco friendly technologies to substitute fossil fuel, it appears that the world has still has a long way to go.<\/span><\/p>\n

In such circumstances, the statement of the UAE President that his country will keep producing fossil fuel as long as there is a market for it in the world is very\u00a0 significant. .\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0UAE President has been honest enough to confess that he has no plans to reduce the production of fossil fuel and the ball is clearly in the court of consumers \u00a0of fossil fuel rather than that of the producers. What is particularly curious is that the next year\u2019s edition of the climate summit is scheduled to be hosted by\u00a0\u00a0 UAE.<\/span><\/p>\n

Obviously, the demand reduction for fossil fuel is the \u00a0sure way of reducing the consumption of fossil fuel in the world, that will improve to the climate conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

One way of reducing the consumption of fossil fuel\u00a0 is to develop \u00a0alternative eco friendly energy source, \u00a0on which development work are under way.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, one should not ignore the fact that the higher demand for fossil fuel and energy source\u00a0\u00a0 are happening\u00a0\u00a0 due to the steady growth in the world population With \u00a0more mouths to feed and more people demanding\u00a0 greater share in the world resource, \u00a0obviously the demand for fossil fuel as energy source cannot come down.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is surprising that in all the climate meetings that have taken place around the world in the past , no one appears to have spoken about reducing the population growth, particularly in developing and under developed countries,\u00a0 to solve the climate issue\u00a0 .\u00a0 While the developed countries like USA, E U, \u00a0Japan are keeping the population under check, in countries like India, population growth still remains high\u00a0\u00a0 with India likely to emerge as the most populated country in the world soon.<\/span><\/p>\n

While the developed countries have nearly stable population, the industries and production centres in developed countries which have high technology strength are producing more and more to meet the increasing demand in developing countries , where demand is growing due to population growth and at the same time economic development.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In several of the climate meet in the past\u00a0 , steps have been taken to provide financial support and incentives to work towards ozone depletion etc. In the same way , perhaps, it would be appropriate to give some incentives to developing and under developed countries to reduce the population growth.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is high time to recognize that countries with high population growth are also significant contributors to global climate crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
