That made me the official host to visiting dignitaries\u2026\u2026\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>I was reminded of meeting, at the very same Wardroom, another cultural icon of the times, Rev.Fr. Marcelline Jayakodi OMI.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">That Wardroom was, then, a spacious, gracious house, perched on the tip of a spur, looking down on the plain below. The location, silence, peace and tranquility charmed all those who visited us. I was privileged to live there. We were talking, in the verandah, on the first day of his visit: first, about the queer, mundane reason for his visit.\u00a0<strong>Rev. Fr. Jayakody<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>Alumnus of \u201cViswabharati,\u201d steeped in Bengali lyrical and Catholic choral music, Sinhala culture and Buddhism and welcomed by Sangha and laity alike as \u201cPansale Piyathuma\u201d)\u00a0<\/em><strong>was the Master in charge of the Band at St. Peter\u2019s College, Bambalapitiya.\u00a0<\/strong>The Management had decided that the Band should learn to play the Bagpipes from the Navy Pipe band. And, as the Pipers were at Diyatalawa training recruits, the boys were sent there to be introduced to the \u201cinfernal pipes\u201d and the Master-in-charge was sent in charge of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Rev. Fr. Jayakody had no great regard for the scheme. He told me \u2013 no, not on that first evening, but later, when we were more comfortable with each other \u2013\u00a0<em>\u201c<strong>What Bagpipes for our boys!? Phillip Gunawardena is right \u2013 this is all \u2018Thuppahi Culture!\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>Anyway, that accounted for his presence as our Guest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Over a few days, we got to know each other and for us to realize that\u00a0<em>\u201cOne common note on either lyre did strike\u201d\u00a0<\/em>and long were our talks each evening. So,\u00a0<strong>it was Music that we were speaking of: namely, the current state of Sinhala music, and the emerging exotic influences<\/strong>. I knew just enough to keep up with him and he was pleasantly surprised that I had heard of the\u00a0<strong>Viswanath Lowji<\/strong>, the Parsi<em>\u00a0eminence grise<\/em>\u00a0of John de Silva.\u00a0We talked of\u00a0<strong>Sunil Shantha\u2019s tribute to Radio Ceylon at its Silver Jubilee<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>\u201cRidee seenu handala-la\u2026mangala geetha gaya..\u201d);\u00a0<\/em>of his own entry for the competition to choose a National Anthem.(<em>\u201cBaethiyena pem pala\u2026.Namadimu Lak Matha\u2026\u201d).<\/em>\u00a0He also spoke of\u00a0<strong>the influence of Tagore\u2019s\u00a0<em>Shantinikethan<\/em>\u00a0and Bengali melodies on the Sinhala music scene.<\/strong>\u00a0Thus far, I could keep up with him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">But more gems of new information slipped from his lips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>\u201cDo you know the words of India\u2019s alternate national anthem \u201cVande Mataram?\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201cI remember hearing it played by Subash Chandra Bose from Japanese-held Sio-nan during the war, but, no, I don\u2019t know the words.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201cWell ,,,,,,\u2019Namo Namo Matha\u2019 is a translation of that. Look, there is nothing called \u2018Bhakthi\u2019 in Buddhism, is there? No, because it is connected to the worship of God \u2026.\u00a0<strong>But there is \u2018Bhakthi\u2019 in Hinduism\u2026. in \u2018Vande Mataram\u2019\u2026and in \u2018Namo Namo Matha\u2019. This is just one clue\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">And so on<em>\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>*<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">While Sinhala music had been a formative feature of my childhood, I had recently discovered Indian classical music. During one of our more reflective pauses I asked him\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201cFather, have you heard the new Indian Classical Music LP put out by HMV?\u2026..\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">He is surprised: he had not known.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201c\u2026.. It\u2019s the first in LP format and has Morning and Evening Ragas. Ustad Ali Akbar Khan on the sarod and Chatur Lal on the tabla, and Yehudi Menuhin introducing Indian Classical Music to the West.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">He is hooked!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201cWould you like to hear it?\u201d \u2026\u201cWhat? Now?\u201d\u2026\u201cYes! Now!\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u2013\u00a0 and he whispers\u00a0<em>\u201cYes!\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">So, I carefully bring from my cabin my recently bought Hi-Fi player (a table model Pye \u201cBlack Box\u201d) to the verandah and we listen together in silence: first to Menuhin\u2019s introduction to the concept and structure of the\u00a0<em>raga<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>tala,<\/em>\u00a0counting aloud the 14-beat cycle of the\u00a0<em>tala<\/em>\u00a0that was being played. And then we let the magic of the\u00a0<em>Rag Sindhu Bhairavi<\/em>\u00a0on the\u00a0<em>sarod<\/em>\u00a0overwhelm us under the starry sky, a cool breeze swishing through the\u00a0<em>deodars<\/em>\u00a0providing the only accompaniment, for even the cicadas have stilled their stridency, in reverence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>After the performance we sit in silence. And, in the soft voice one speaks when the music dies, he muses:\u00a0<\/strong><em>\u201c\u2026.<strong>and to think I had to come to Diyatalawa, to a Navy camp, to listen to such heavenly music<\/strong>\u201d.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">****<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>An Exclamation from the Thuppahi Editor, 15 November 2022:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cVolaare! While serving in the Navy, he was at the Naval HQ in Colombo Fort when one of\u00a0<strong>Vijithamuni Rohana de Silva<\/strong>,\u00a0one of the seamen in the guard of honour for Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on the 30 April 1987 after he arrived to sign the Indo-Sri Lanka accord (forced unilaterally on Lanka). And it was Somasiri who put me in touch with Retd Lt.
