The Socceroos, unheralded and written off by many, have created more than their fair share this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Here is the story of Australia\u2019s continuing World Cup campaign so far, told through the key moments and turning points in the group stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u2018OH MY GOD\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Australia had started well in their opening match against France, competing fiercely in the first few minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cYou\u2019re going in without any friendlies in your first game at the World Cup against the world champions,\u201d says Alex Wilkinson, who played all three matches for the Socceroos at the 2014 World Cup. \u201cIt\u2019s high stakes. Just straight in. It was a really good start, we were causing them some problems.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">As French news service France24 reported in its live coverage: \u201cThe reigning world champions are feverish and the Australians are taking advantage of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Then the improbable happened. Mathew Leckie received a long ball from Harry Souttar on the right, beat France\u2019s Lucas Hernandez, and crossed to Craig Goodwin who blasted it in. One-nil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">As Harry Kewell aptly put it in the SBS commentary box: \u201cOh my God.\u201d The stands erupted, the players jumped for joy. \u201cA fantastic goal and they\u2019d earned it,\u201d says ex-Socceroos striker David Mitchell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/interactive\/hub\/media\/graphic-embed\/11971\/AusvFrance_1-07.png\" alt=\"graphic-0\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt was definitely a training ground move,\u201d says 2006 Socceroos legend John Aloisi. \u201cIt\u2019s not just that Leckie pushed forward to receive the ball, it\u2019s Jackson Irvine making a great forward run to drag the centre-back out of position, giving Goodwin the opportunity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Goodwin described the moment as \u201cpure elation\u201d. The Australians had hope.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u2018HEAVY TOUCH\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">France aren\u2019t world champions for nothing, and swiftly moved up the gears, equalising through Adrien Rabiot in the 27th minute. Five minutes later Australian right-back Nathaniel Atkinson was caught in possession by Rabiot after a heavy touch. After a quick one-two with Kylian Mbappe, he crossed to Olivier Giroud for a simple finish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cAtkinson could have dropped deeper, it was a heavy touch, but Irvine played it to him and could have given him a better option,\u201d Aloisi says. \u201cI thought Behich was a little too wide out on the other side of the field. We were just too open.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThe kid actually did decently well,\u201d coach Graham Arnold said.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"_6ebFV noPrint\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"\"><iframe class=\"_16-Dw AkZ3C\" title=\"Embedded iFrame\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/interactive\/modules\/graphic-embed\/?resizable=true&amp;v=512&amp;configUrl=https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/interactive\/hub\/configs\/graphic-embed\/12002.json\" height=\"468\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-testid=\"embed-iframe\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cHe did his best against one of the best players in the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Atkinson himself was rueful after the match.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not hidden, how quick that guy [Mbappe] is,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cYou give him one step, and he\u2019s gone. As a team, you can always come up with a plan. But sometimes if it\u2019s one-v-one, he gets the better of you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u2018IT COMPOUNDS\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">From then on, it was an exercise in damage control for the stunned Socceroos. Australia didn\u2019t crumble, but they were pinned back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cWe did fall apart a little bit towards the end,\u201d says Mitchell. \u201cOnce they scored they had the momentum. It\u2019s hard psychologically.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ffx.io\/images\/$zoom_0.155%2C$multiply_0.7725%2C$ratio_1.5%2C$width_756%2C$x_0%2C$y_0\/t_crop_custom\/q_86%2Cf_auto\/059d4dbe42141754f1d376e9cd30325f1bbfc81c\" alt=\"Socceroos players after their loss to France.\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Wilkinson, a veteran defender, said: \u201cWhen you\u2019re defending for long periods, if you can\u2019t hold the ball for more than one or two passes, it gets harder and harder to clear, to get the ball out of your own defensive zone. You\u2019re spending so much energy defending in a deep block. It compounds and compounds and compounds. If you can\u2019t keep the ball and you\u2019re copping attack after attack against a good team like the French, goals will come.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p5c0i6\">It finished 4-1<\/a>. \u201cI thought that this could happen,\u201d Aloisi says. \u201cIn any game, you\u2019ll come under pressure. You have to fall back on what you\u2019ve been practising in training \u2014 that\u2019s how you get out of it. As soon as you start losing your shape and do things that might weaken your structure, that\u2019s when you become really stretched. You have to try and ride through the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cBut when you\u2019re up against Mbappe and he\u2019s running at you all the time, there\u2019s no easy solution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>PURE ECSTASY\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">If Australia were to make it out of the group stage, the pre-tournament consensus was that the Tunisia match held the key. The Socceroos brought the intensity. It peaked in the 23rd minute when Mitchell Duke dropped into midfield to receive a through ball from Souttar. He played it to Riley McGree, who spread it out to Goodwin on the left wing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt was a move they had practised,\u201d says Aloisi. \u201cThey pressured with the midfielders. They beat the press with a ball from Souttar to Duke, then the great lay-off to Goodwin out wide. Aziz Behich makes the run into midfield, just enough to draw a player and make it two versus two in the box. There was a little bit of luck in the deflection but they created it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"_6ebFV noPrint\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><iframe class=\"_16-Dw AkZ3C\" title=\"Embedded iFrame\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/interactive\/modules\/graphic-embed\/?resizable=true&amp;v=340&amp;configUrl=https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/interactive\/hub\/configs\/graphic-embed\/11972.json\" height=\"468\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-testid=\"embed-iframe\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Goodwin\u2019s deflected cross sprayed to Duke, whose glancing header nestled in the corner of the net. It was a high-octane goal that set the tone for the rest of Australia\u2019s performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cA great goal, at a great time,\u201d Mitchell says. \u201cIt was luck, but you need that. Duke did brilliantly to receive the ball and keep going.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The goalscorer described the moment, which he celebrated by\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p5c1jg\">signalling to his son<\/a>\u00a0Jaxson in the stands, as \u201cpure ecstasy\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt has been a lot of a sacrifice \u2014 the family, being alone a lot of the time in the last couple of years, it hasn\u2019t been easy,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cBut these kinds of moments make those sacrifices worth it and that\u2019s the mentality you need to have.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Australia had the crucial lead. Now they had to hang onto it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u2018THE DNA\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The midfield intensity of Aaron Mooy, Jackson Irvine and the rest made the difference, chasing down the second balls and stopping Tunisia making a comeback.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt\u2019s an Australian quality that\u2019s been there for years,\u201d Aloisi says. \u201cWe\u2019re not a team that can just sit off and wait for the opposition to make a move. It didn\u2019t surprise me, we\u2019ve seen it before. It\u2019s what Australian teams are all about. We\u2019ve always had it \u2013 it used to be [Mile] Jedinak, it used to be [Vince] Grella. Now it\u2019s Mooy and Irvine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Mitchell sees some parallels with the team spirit and grit Australia displayed under Frank Arok in the 1980s \u2014 coincidentally also a period when several Socceroos had Scottish backgrounds and a certain Graham Arnold was starting to make his mark as a young striker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cPeople talk about the Aussie DNA, but it\u2019s been there a long time, and we had it today. We always punch above our weight. Obviously things are different now. Arnie as a coach is very experienced, he played himself in Holland and Belgium, he has great coaching experience and he was a big part of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p5bkel\">Guus Hiddink<\/a>\u00a0era. But you can see the pattern. He sets his teams up defensively and they are always there for each other, always backing each other up. Great to see.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt\u2019s right up there. Right up there with the very best defender, midfielder, forward &#8211; it\u2019s one of the best individual displays I\u2019ve seen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u2018THE TACKLE\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Waves of attacks were being broken up, and it was Souttar\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p5c1jl\">who did more than anyone<\/a>\u00a0to break Tunisian hearts. When centre-back Kye Rowles mistimed a bouncing ball, Tunisia\u2019s Taha Yassine Khenissi was through on goal. But Souttar\u2019s memorable covering sprint, crunching tackle and ice cool recovery snuffed out the chance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThat kind of tackle doesn\u2019t just lift your team, it affects the opposition,\u201d Aloisi says. \u201cThey see that even if you make a mistake there will be a teammate covering, it deflates the opposition. That\u2019s why it was so big in the moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt was just great. Don\u2019t forget\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p5bznp\">questions were being asked<\/a>\u00a0about Souttar\u2019s fitness, he\u2019d only had a couple of games [after knee reconstruction surgery] and he showed in that moment that he can lift the team. It was massive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"_6ebFV noPrint\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><iframe class=\"_16-Dw AkZ3C\" title=\"Embedded iFrame\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/interactive\/modules\/graphic-embed\/?resizable=true&amp;v=482&amp;configUrl=https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/interactive\/hub\/configs\/graphic-embed\/11974.json\" height=\"468\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-testid=\"embed-iframe\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Wilkinson said: \u201cA lot of it is instinctive. You don\u2019t have time to make the calculation in these moments. There\u2019s no time to think. You would\u2019ve just seen the ball coming past Kye and thought \u2018I\u2019ve got to make the challenge before the ball gets into the box\u2019. He made up the ground and timed it to perfection, but he kept the ball in and moved it forward. And what was great to see was two or three other Aussie players coming in to back him up. To be able to do that at the end of the game, it showed how committed they were, how much they wanted it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Jackson Irvine says: \u201cThat moment, that tackle, it was celebrated almost more than the goal, I think, in certain ways. That will be one that\u2019s played for years to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt\u2019s right up there. Right up there with the very best defender, midfielder, forward \u2013 it\u2019s one of the best individual displays I\u2019ve seen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u2018THE DARK HORSES\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">It all came down to this. Would\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p5c1ir\">the Tunisia win<\/a>\u00a0be an aberration, or was it a taste of things to come for the Socceroos? Denmark were determined to show it was the former.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ffx.io\/images\/$zoom_0.193%2C$multiply_0.7725%2C$ratio_1.5%2C$width_756%2C$x_0%2C$y_0\/t_crop_custom\/q_86%2Cf_auto\/7a766745a5152d7efdb71bbe65c05822df244a12\" alt=\"Aziz Behich celebrates after Australia\u2019s win over Tunisia.\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Aziz Behich celebrates after Australia\u2019s win over Tunisia.<cite><\/cite><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt started out opposite to the first two group games,\u201d says Wilkinson. \u201cThey really took it up to us, they were creating space between the lines, they looked pretty good. They really had us camped in our own half for the first 30 minutes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Mat Ryan stood tall in the Australian goal several times, no more than in the 11th minute when Danish midfielder Mathias Jensen slipped through into space on the right and drove a shot hard at goal. Ryan leapt to turn it around the near post. And that was as close as Denmark came.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThere was that long period at the start of the game where they were really giving it to us,\u201d says Mitchell. \u201cAnd you\u2019re dealing with a top side \u2014 ranked, I think, 10th in the world, one of the dark horses for the World Cup \u2014 and they had us pinned right back. Then when you see your goalkeeper make a top save like that, it\u2019s given the team a lift. You could see the belief was there, the desire was there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u2018LOW AND HARD\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Denmark\u2019s momentum had faded, and the Australians started to click on either side of half-time. As word filtered through of Tunisia taking the lead over France in the other group match, it changed the equation Australia faced. A draw might not be enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Souttar won the ball once again in defence, playing it forward to find McGree, who found Leckie with a long pass. The winger had two players to beat. He cut inside, then back, then drilled the ball past Kasper Schmeichel into the Danish net. Cue early morning pandemonium in hundreds of thousands of households.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cI was up off the couch, dog barking next to me, it was unbelievable,\u201d says Mitchell, the scorer of crucial World Cup qualifying goals himself in the past. \u201cIt was one of those moments. Leckie was calm, he\u2019s got experience, he\u2019s played in the Bundesliga. A lot of players might hold it too long in that situation. But he had an opportunity and he took it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"_6ebFV noPrint\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><iframe class=\"_16-Dw AkZ3C\" title=\"Embedded iFrame\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/interactive\/modules\/graphic-embed\/?resizable=true&amp;v=660&amp;configUrl=https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/interactive\/hub\/configs\/graphic-embed\/12027.json\" height=\"468\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-testid=\"embed-iframe\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Leckie talked through his split-second timing afterwards: \u201cIn those moments, you don\u2019t think too much or you don\u2019t have time to think,\u201d he told SBS. \u201cIt happens so fast. It was a great ball. One more man to beat. I wanted to cut in. He went back that way. I went the other way. Low and hard. It\u2019s difficult for a keeper to save.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u2018THE LONGEST HALF HOUR\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">This was it: hold out for the last third of the match and Australia were through. The Socceroos metaphorically filled sandbags and manned the trenches, but had the composure to mount some raids of their own to keep the Danes under pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cWe put our bodies on the line, we were there for each other, backing each other up,\u201d says Wilkinson. \u201cThey were immense, running and chasing them down. I actually thought Denmark looked more dangerous in the first 30 minutes. We just were able to close them down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Despite the frenetic action on the pitch, time moved slowly.
