Isaac Watts\u00a0(17 July 1674 \u2013 25 November 1748) was an English\u00a0Congregational minister, hymn writer, theologian, and logician. He was a prolific and popular hymn writer and is credited with some 750 hymns. His works include &#8220;When I Survey the Wondrous Cross&#8221;,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christmassongsandcarols.com\/products\/joy-to-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.christmassongsandcarols.com\/products\/joy-to-the-world&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1672031598606000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0crByDHjJgAF4gt658Wc5Q\">Joy to the World<\/a>, and &#8220;Our God, Our Help in Ages Past&#8221;. He is recognized as the &#8220;Godfather of English Hymnody&#8221;; many of his hymns remain in use today and have been translated into numerous languages. He was a well-known hymnwriter and theologian in England.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Christmas is a time of joy.\u00a0A celebration of life, giving and good cheer. Yet beyond the festive imagery, the lights, sightings and food are the stories wrapped in song and rhyme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Joy to the World is a popular carol that is a seasonal favourite. And yet it is a strange one as Joy to the World is based on a Psalm. Its lyrics are a celebration of joy and sovereignty of God and Jesus. In it the nations of the world are asked to rejoice as God\u2019s faithfulness to the house of Israel has delivered salvation to earth. The four verse hymn is a description of Christ\u2019s second coming and return to the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The\u00a0<strong>first verse<\/strong>\u00a0is a declaration of Christ\u2019s return. It asks the world and all within it to \u2018Receive her King\u2019 and to be joyous and \u2018Let every heart prepare Him room\u2019 while the Heavens above and world below sing in celebration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The\u00a0<strong>second verse<\/strong>\u00a0speaks of Christ\u2019s reign on earth and how every living thing celebrates His return: \u2018While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains\u2019 echo his second coming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Powerful and beautiful is the\u00a0<strong>third verse<\/strong>\u00a0\u2018No more let sin and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground.\u2019 It delves deeply into humanity\u2019s transgressions and deep sadness. It shows us how merciful Christ is and offers every sinner blessings that flow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The final and\u00a0<strong>fourth verse<\/strong>\u00a0is a build-up of Christ\u2019s rule on earth. It shines light on His noble virtues both \u2018truth\u2019 and \u2018grace\u2019, His \u2018righteousness\u2019 intertwined with the \u2018wonders of His love\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">This song is all about the fulfillment of what Christ came to do in the first place. Christmas is not only a time to look back at the grace accomplished in the past. Christmas is also a time to look forward to the grace that was accomplished for our future. When we sing these words we are proclaiming the ultimate joy to be revealed.
