The Work of Christmas Begins: A Poem by Howard Thurman<\/span><\/h1>\n
\n

Christian theologian and mystic Howard Thurman wrote a poem to describe the ongoing work of Christmas after the day passes.<\/span><\/h3>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
The day after Christmas can be a letdown. For weeks, sometimes months in advance, we prepare for the coming of this single day.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

We write Christmas lists, gather lists from others, go shopping for gifts, put up decorations, listen to seasonal music, plan elaborate meals, light candles on the Advent wreath and then the day comes and goes in 24 hours just like any other day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then what?<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

All of that build-up for a brief few moments that swiftly join the stream of history leave us with a sense of both fatigue and bewilderment. What comes next?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Christian theologian and mystic, Howard Thurman, viewed the days after Christmas from a spiritual perspective. He wrote a poem, \u201cThe Work of Christmas Begins,\u201d to express his sentiments.<\/span><\/p>\n

Properly understood, our work is only just beginning after Christmas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Followers of Christ have been commissioned to walk the path he did. To bind up the broken-hearted. To preach good news to the poor. \u00a0 \u00a0To proclaim liberty to the captives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Christmas brings the incarnate God, the Prince of Peace, to humanity. In this prince\u2019s kingdom mercy, justice, and love reign.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As citizens of this heavenly kingdom and members of this royal household, Christ\u2019s followers serve as ambassadors of this kingdom ethic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now the day after Christmas, our work is only just beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
