It is an undisputed fact that<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Sri Lankans love their baila.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Baila has Afro-Portuguese origins, and over centuries has become unique to Sri<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Lanka, from its beginnings as folk art music and subsequently blending into mainstream music in the 1950s and 1960s up to now, changing with the times<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">along the way. From the era of Wally Bastiansz and the indomitable Sunil Perera of<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">the Gypsies to the crowd-pulling Bathiya &amp; Santhush, baila has progressively<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">endeared itself across generations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">On Kaleidoscope this week, we delve into the roots and history of baila with<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">University of Cambridge Faculty of History Lecturer Prof. Shihan De Silva<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Jayasuriya, who was visiting Sri Lanka recently. She has not just written about but<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">also researched deeply into the roots of this phenomenon that has gripped Sri<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Lanka for decades and discussed the rhythmic, lyrical, and auditory wonder that is<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">baila.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Jayasuriya is the Chair of the International Council on Monuments and Sites<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">(ICOMOS) National Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage Sri Lanka, Senior<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Research Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, School of Advanced<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Study at the University of London, Visiting Fellow at the Lucy Cavendish College of<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">the University of Cambridge and the International Institute of Social History (IISG),<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Amsterdam, Visiting Professor at the College of International Relations at<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Ritsumeikan University \u2013 Kyoto, Collaborative Lecturer at the University of Hawaii,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">and Collaborative Researcher at the University of Colombo. She has authored<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">numerous books on history, ethnomusicology, literature, and linguistics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Following are excerpts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Why has baila become so central to our culture?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Baila is our common Sri Lankan identity \u2013 it gives us all a unique \u201cSri Lankanness\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">People seem to think the word \u201cbaila\u201d \u2013 because it is Portuguese (in origin) \u2013 is<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">something foreign, but what we call \u201cbaila\u201d today is chorus baila, and its<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">composer was Ollington Mervin Bastiansz. All this emerged after Independence in<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">1948.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Bastiansz was the supreme Kapiri\u00f1a artiste and also the best \u201cwaada\u201d baila (i.e.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">debate baila) artiste. Combining these traditions together with his background as<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">a policeman playing in the Police Band and being exposed to Western music as he<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">had a Sinhalese mother and a Dutch-Portuguese father, hailing from Galle,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Bastiansz mixed and matched and composed his own unique style of music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The reason he held the pulse of the people was that just after Independence, the<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">nation wanted a change. They didn\u2019t want to carry on in the colonial way. He<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">composed this baila at a very important time in our history.Are there African roots to baila?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Most definitely. The Portuguese introduced a new element to our music: Harmony<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u2013 playing several notes that work well together. The African roots come through<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">syncopation, and Kapiri\u00f1a illustrates cross-rhythms, with the left hand playing in<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">3\/4 timing, which is three crotchet notes to a bar, while the right hand plays to the<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">6\/8 beat \u2013 six quaver notes to a bar. This is what drives the music \u2013 the<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">syncopations. It lights up the music and it makes everyone want to dance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">What influences has baila had over the years?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The baila referred to today is chorus baila. But \u201cwaada\u201d baila became very popular<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">and survives in places like Moratuwa. It\u2019s basically challenge-singing, impromptu<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">baila where the words are composed to the music at that moment of challenging<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">your opponent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Sumathipala Perera was one of the foremost \u201cwaada\u201d baila singers in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">When I interviewed him for my research, he told me he had challenged Wally in a<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cwaada\u201d baila competition. And he remembered Wally\u2019s retort: \u201cAagama<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Christian, samaagama Wesleyan, mama Wally Bastian, all-Ceylon baila champion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">It\u2019s a matter of wit as well; impromptu composition is also called \u201chitivana baila\u201d,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">but Sri Lankans know it by various names.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Are there any lesser-known facts about baila?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The most important fact to understand is that chorus baila is \u201cMade in Sri Lanka\u201d,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">like Ceylon Tea. It\u2019s not something foreign. It\u2019s not Portuguese either; (although)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">the word \u201cbaila\u201d is Portuguese, it has Latin roots \u2013 \u201cbailar\u201d means \u201cto dance\u201d. The<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">other fact is that baila is a narrative poem set to music to which you can dance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Baila has various contexts \u2013 storytelling, educational, and even comical. If you<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">listen to Wally\u2019s songs like Mathakai Amme, he was also educating the nation. Kusi<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Amma Sara would be a comical song.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Wally sang in five languages \u2013 Sri Lankan Malay, Sri Lankan Portuguese, English,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Tamil, and Sinhala \u2013 so that Sri Lankans could understand what he was singing about. After Independence, his songs began to speak to everybody, and by singing<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">in these five languages, he felt he was not excluding anybody.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">There\u2019s a myth that baila is Sinhalese, but that is not so either. Sunil Perera sang a<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">baila called Buongiorno, Senore, a bilingual baila in Sinhala and Italian. I remember<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">requesting him that with his popularity and following, if he could promote baila in<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">an international language \u2013 not Portuguese or English, because nobody wants to<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">be reminded of the colonial era, but perhaps Spanish \u2013 baila could be promoted<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">internationally. Baila is so catchy because the Africanised rhythm makes people<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">want to dance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Do you think the younger generation will embrace baila the way older<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">generations have?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">For anything to survive, it has to change. Listen to Bathiya &amp; Santush\u2019s Baila<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Gamuda Remix Karala \u2013 a big change from the likes of Nona, Mage Nurse Nona<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">and Mathakai Amme. I strongly believe the younger generation will continue the<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">tradition. We may even see the birth of \u201crap-baila\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Sri Lankans are the subject of envy for the people of Goa. The Goan Catholics have<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">three types of music which are legacies of their Portuguese rule, but these are<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">relegated to festivals now. Our baila is a living tradition.
