Daisy Rasammah Daniels<\/strong>, known popularly as\u00a0Rukmani Devi<\/strong>\u00a0(15 January 1923\u201328 October 1978:\u00a0Sinhala<\/a>:\u00a0\u0dbb\u0dd4\u0d9a\u0dca\u0db8\u0dab\u0dd3 \u0daf\u0dda\u0dc0\u0dd3) was a Sri Lankan film actress and singer, who was often acclaimed as\u00a0\u201cThe Nightingale of Sri Lanka<\/strong>\u201c.[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

She made it to the silver screen via the stage and had acted in close to 100 films at the time of her death<\/strong>. Having an equal passion for singing as well as a melodious voice, she was Sri Lanka\u2019s foremost female singer in the gramophone era.[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0After her death, she was awarded the\u00a0Sarasaviya \u2018Rana Thisara\u2019- Life Time Achievement Award<\/a>\u00a0at the 1979 Sarasaviya Awards Festival.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n

Personal life:\u00a0<\/strong>Rukmani Devi, was born as Daisy Rasammah Daniels to a\u00a0Tamil<\/a>\u00a0Colombo Chetty<\/a>\u00a0Christian family on 15 January 1923 at Ramboda in\u00a0Nuwara Eliya<\/a><\/strong>, Sri Lanka. Second, in a family of five, her father, John Daniel worked on a plantation and her mother, Helen Rose was a teacher.[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0She grew up in\u00a0Colombo<\/a>\u00a0and had her early education at St. Matthew\u2019s School and then moved on to St. Clare\u2019s School,\u00a0Wellawatte<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

She was married to veteran dramatist, actor and singer,\u00a0Eddie Jayamanne<\/a>, whom she fell in love with as a result of her close association with him when performing in dramas produced by \u201cMinerva Dramatic Club\u201d founded by\u00a0B. A. W. Jayamanne<\/a>. They lived at \u201cJaya Ruk\u201d, at Angurukaramulla,\u00a0Negombo<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Career:\u00a0<\/strong>As a little girl, Daniels showed an inborn talent to sing and dance. At the age of seven, she was picked to sing\u00a0Christmas carols<\/a>.\u00a0Impressed with her ability to sing, dance, and also to act, she was selected to perform a main role in a Christmas play,\u00a0<\/strong>\u2018The Shoemaker\u2019s Wife<\/strong>\u2018.<\/strong>\u00a0The stage play was trained and presented by St. Clare\u2019s School, Wellawatte. Watching her play this role much enthusiastically, Walter Abeysinghe, a drama producer, sought permission from her father to invite her to play the lead role of \u2018Sita\u2019 in his drama\u00a0\u2018Ramayanaya.<\/strong>\u2018\u00a0Thus,\u00a0in 1935 at the age of just 12 years she performed in this stage play<\/strong>,\u00a0presented by the \u2018Sinhala Natya Sabha\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

This marked the beginning of an illustrious career that would span over four decades. As her performances were highly appreciated by the packed audience, well-known dramatist Dick Dias chose her for two of his stage plays, \u201cJana Kiharanaya\u201d and \u201cMayawathie\u201d. She was now flooded with stage dramas, as she became Mayawathi in Charles Dias\u2019 \u2018Mayawathi\u2019, Juliet in a Sinhala adaption of Romeo and Juliet, playing the lead female role in all of them. Rukmani performed her singing career as a simple singer on Sri Lankan radio in the mid-1940s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gabriel Gunaratne, who was in charge of recording songs at the then His Master\u2019s Voice (HMV) Gramophone Records Company, was the permanent music director of the company. She was introduced to the H. W. Rupasinghe one day in October 1938 by Gunaratne. Rupasinghe, who saw Rukmani\u2019s singing prowess, chose her for the first album, which was launched by Master His Voice No. 9300.[2] With her first audio recording of the famous song \u201cSiri Buddhagaya Vihare\u201c with Master \u201cH. W. Rupasinghe\u201d. in 1938 at the age of 15, she captured the hearts of the masses and she shaped her career from that of an actress to that of an actress turned singer. This song was recorded to 78 rpm (gramophone) record label HMV with the number N-9300 and issued in 1939 by the Cargills Ltd, local agents for HMV.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her unique voice attracted many music directors, as her singing career moved from the stage to the silver screen. Joining Rupasinghe Master\u2019s band as a regular singer, she faced three challenges at the time. That is, she had not studied Hindustani classical music properly as well as had to compete with renowned singers of that year such as Lakshmi Bai, Annie Boteju and Susila Jayasinghe. The third was the language challenge. She did not know how to read or write Sinhala and she used to write it all down in English. Due to the vocal training given by Rupasinghe Master through those songs, she soon became a simple classical singer as well as the most popular young singer on the His Masters Voice record company. During 1938\u201345, she recorded 44 songs for HMV Records. Rukmani sang almost all the Sinhala songs composed in Hindi and Vanga classical songs sung by Kumari Jutika Roy, then popularly known as \u201cBhajan Songstress\u201d in India.[2]<\/span><\/p>\n

It was also, around this time that her name underwent a change from Daisy Daniels to the well known \u2018Rukmani Devi\u2019. There are two schools of thinking as to how the name \u201cRukmani Devi\u201d originated. According to one school, the late H. W. Rupasinghe maestro created the name, while the other believe that Jayantha Weerasekara and Michael Sannas Liyanage who is in his 90s, created it.[5] Entering the stage, Rukmani had the opportunity to perform in Noorthi dramas such as Janakiharanaya, Rohini and Mayawathi.[2] Since 1940, B. A. W. Jayamanne, founder of \u201cMinerva Dramatic Club\u201d of Negombo took Rukmani to perform remarkable roles in his dramas, such as \u2018Apparition\u2019, \u2018Broken Promise\u2019, \u2018Changing Fate, \u2018Defeated Aim\u2019, \u2018Evasive Denial\u2019, \u2018Fanatic Faith\u2019, \u2018Grisly Guardian\u2019, \u2018Hasty Decision\u2019 and lastly \u2018Irangani\u2019. Above-mentioned plays followed the English alphabet.<\/span><\/p>\n

The popular play \u2018Broken Promise\u2019 (Kadawunu Poronduwa), was adapted into a film by B. A. W. Jayamanne. This was the first Sinhala film \u2013 Kadawunu Poronduwa, screened on 21 January 1947. Rukmani Devi, who also began her film career through the role of \u2018Ranjani\u2019 in this film, also became the first local cinema actress. Her film career, which thus began spread over a period of more than three decades. According to Sri Lankeya Cinema Vanshaya (pp 637 \u2013 638) written by Nuwan Nayanajith Kumara, from Kadawunu Poronduwa in 1947 to Ara Soyza in 1984, Rukmani Devi had played different roles in 99 films, up to the time of her death. Rukmani Devi won the first place in the \u201cPopular Singing Series\u201d in the 1953 Radio Artists Classification Test.[2]<\/span><\/p>\n

An equally talented singer, some of the immortal songs she sang for films are Sandyave Sriya for \u2018Kadawunu Poronduwa\u2019, Pinsara Mage Soyura for \u2018Kapati Arakshakaya\u2019, Gala Kandeni, and Moranawa Preme Hade for \u2018Weradun Kurumanama\u2019, Nindede Rathri Yahane for \u2018Peralena Iranama\u2019, Mavila Pena vi Rupe for \u2018Kela Handa\u2019, Pem Sihina Loke Maya for \u2018Mathabhedaya\u2019, Melavi Yanna Hada Mage for \u2018Daiva Yogaya\u2019, Suva dena Sita Sanasum for \u2018Ladalu\u2019 and Doi Doi Puta for \u2018Ahasin Polavata\u2019. In 1975 Rukmani sing \u201cPem Rajatahane\u201d with Milton Mallawarachchi. Rukmani made duets with amateur singers since the 1960s, such as: song \u201cAda Handapana Paya Hari Lassanai\u201d with Sujatha Perera (Attanayake), \u201cGang Ivuru Paduru Gane\u201d with Sidney Attygalle, \u201cKokilaya Keviliya\u201d, \u201cDenna Piriye Dethata Oya Detha\u201d with H. R. Jothipala, and \u201cIthin Palak Nehe Kumariya\u201d with J. A. Milton Perera.[2]<\/span><\/p>\n

In the mid sixties she joined the Sinhala calypso musical group \u2018Los Cabelleros\u2019 led by late Neville Fernando. They recorded ever popular Sinhala songs such as \u201cMalbara Himidiriye\u201d, \u201cMenike Obe Sinawe\u201d & \u201cSandak Nage\u201d. Rukmani Devi was also featured prominently on the airwaves of Radio Ceylon, the oldest radio station in South Asia.[2]<\/span><\/p>\n

Death: Rukmani Devi, died in a tragic motor accident near St. Mary\u2019s Church, Thudella on 28 October 1978. She was returning after a musical show in Uyanwatte, Matara. Her funeral ceremony was attended by a very large gathering; film makers and dramatists, friends, politicians, relatives and her beloved fans.<\/span><\/p>\n

She was the most celebrated Sri Lankan artiste and a statue in memory of her was erected at the Kanuwana Junction. The road on which the Rukmani Devi Museum in Negombo is located was also renamed \u2018Rukmani Devi Mawatha\u2019 by President Ranasinghe Premadasa, on 28 October 1990.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn popular culture: She was the one and only Sri Lankan actress on the cover page of popular Indian Film Magazine \u201cFilmfare\u201d and was also featured in \u201cMy like and dislike\u201d in 1958 in the Filmfare. The second generation Toyota Hi-ace is known in Sri Lanka as the \u2018Rukmani Model\u2019, because she was travelling in one when she had her fatal accident.<\/span><\/p>\n

Attack on Grave Site: On 12 August 2011, a former mayor of Negombo and a former Minister of the Parliament Mr. Ananda Munasinghe was allegedly charged and arrested by the Negombo Police for dislodging the statue of Rukmani Devi, erected on her grave by one of her fans Mrs. Sriyani Achala Dissanayake. Several popular media bloated this incident as an attack by an unidentified group of criminals to Rukmani Devi\u2019s grave,[6] and a protest rally to this incident was organised in Negomb<\/span><\/p>\n
