{"id":106955,"date":"2023-01-07T09:26:18","date_gmt":"2023-01-07T09:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/?p=106955"},"modified":"2023-01-07T09:27:00","modified_gmt":"2023-01-07T09:27:00","slug":"sunitha-goonetilleke-stars-in-new-zealand-veterans-over60s-triumph-in-australia-by-clifford-lazarus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/sunitha-goonetilleke-stars-in-new-zealand-veterans-over60s-triumph-in-australia-by-clifford-lazarus\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunitha Goonetilleke stars in New Zealand Veterans Over60s triumph in Australia  &#8211; By Clifford Lazarus"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Sunitha Goonetilleke stars in New Zealand Veterans Over60s triumph in Australia &#8211; <span style=\"color: #666699;\">By Clifford Lazarus<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-106957 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Winning-team-e1673083346914.jpeg\" alt=\"Sunitha Goonetilleke stars in New Zealand Veterans Over60s triumph in Australia - By Clifford Lazarus\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">A cricketer\u2019s achievements in his late teens, twenties, or as an experienced player in his thirties does not surprise many, but it does raise eyebrows when a septuagenarian ends up with the best bowling performance for his team along with a\u00a0 \u201cMan of the match\u201d award in the international arena.\u00a0 That honour goes to Sunitha Goonetilleke who played cricket for Air Ceylon in the Nationalised Services, skippered the Sri Lankan team \u201cSinha\u201d in Oman\u2019s first division and played in the New Zealand domestic scene. \u201cAs a bowler it is not just my effort that matters, the whole team has helped me to achieve this, especially the fielders. \u00a0 I feel humbled and honoured and thank God for the opportunity\u201d states Sunitha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">A medium pace bowler known throughout Auckland for his accurate line and length spells, Sunitha has played for the\u00a0 Sri Lankan Cricket Club (SLCC) in Auckland for the past 30 years\u00a0 and\u00a0 in the Auckland Presidents Grade (Over40s) team for SLCC for the past 10 years.\u00a0 He also represented Auckland in the Over60s national tournament for the past five years.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Representing New Zealand team 3 Veterans Over60s at this year\u2019s Barwon VCA Over 60s National Championships played at Geelong in Victoria, Sunitha starred throughout the four-match 40-over tournament and was declared \u201cMan of the match&#8221; for his outstanding performance against Queensland as he bowled the New Zealand side to victory.\u00a0 Featuring in all matches of the tournament, Sunitha delivered 27 overs in total, conceding 78 runs for a haul of six wickets, which turned out to be the best bowling analysis for any bowler throughout the tournament. The NZ team 3 went on to become champions in their Division in the tournament and won the Graham Horlin-Smith Shield 2022.\u00a0 \u201cMy body has been coping with four days cricket.\u00a0 Of course there are niggles and injuries you carry.\u00a0 I thank God for giving me the ability to keep going. \u00a0 The fact that I practice and play regularly for my club, and also the NZ nationals in a five consecutive-day tournament, has helped train the body.\u00a0 I believe that, at my age, the key is to keep fit, and I have managed to do that\u201d added Sunitha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-106956 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Sunitha-Goonetilleke.jpeg\" alt=\"Sunitha Goonetilleke stars in New Zealand Veterans Over60s triumph in Australia - By Clifford Lazarus\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The selection to New Zealand Veterans Over60s is based on an individual\u2019s performance at the New Zealand Over60s Nationals held in February each year.\u00a0 Sunitha was selected to represent the team for the past three years but Covid denied him the opportunity to showcase his talents.\u00a0 However he grabbed the opportunity this year.\u00a0 \u201cHave passion for the game and keep fit\u201d was\u00a0 Sunitha\u2019s parting advice to all cricketers.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sunitha Goonetilleke stars in New Zealand Veterans Over60s triumph in Australia &#8211;
