EVER wondered where some of Australia\u2019s strangest sounding places got their names from? Here are the real reasons and why they\u2019re worth a visit.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

1. FOUL BAY<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Sounds like:\u00a0<\/b>A pungent, weed-infested coast where old seals go to die.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in fact:<\/b>\u00a0A beautiful and isolated 16km beach where the fishing is great and your campsite has guaranteed water views.<\/span><\/p>\n

Foul Bay is near the bottom of little-visited\u00a0Yorke Peninsula<\/a>; if you need some amenities and a little more company, scoot 10 minutes west to Marion Bay township, right next door to fabulous Innes National Park.<\/span><\/p>\n

Named for:\u00a0<\/b>Poor anchorage. Explorer Matthew Flinders couldn\u2019t find a place to park HMS\u00a0Investigator\u00a0<\/i>and decided to condemn the place forever more.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not to be confused with:\u00a0<\/b>Dismal Swamp (Tas), Stinkhole (Tas), Smelleys Lagoon (NSW), and Pisspot Creek (Tas).<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting there:<\/b>\u00a0Foul Bay is a 3.5-hour drive from\u00a0Adelaide.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

2. BANANA (QLD)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Sounds like:\u00a0<\/b>Yet another fruitful corner of Queensland \u2014 sweet and lush and packed with Vitamin B6.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in fact:\u00a0<\/b>A dot on the hide of cattle country in central Queensland.\u00a0Banana\u00a0<\/a>is the historic heartland of the region (established in 1860), and while the Banana Hotel Motel serves a mean steak, \u2019nanas are no more in evidence than any other fruit. The hero of the Banana Shire is Biloela, 50km east and gateway to barra-packed Lake Callide and Kroombit Tops National Park.<\/span><\/p>\n

Named for:<\/b>\u00a0\u201cIn bygone days, of bullock drays, Banana led the team\/ An enormous yellow bullock who died beside a stream.\u201d A yellow cow, then.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not to be confused with:<\/b>\u00a0The Pineapple (Tas),\u00a0Apple Trees (SA), Pear Gully (Qld) and Orange (NSW).<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting there:<\/b>\u00a0Banana is 170km south of\u00a0Rockhampton<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. WOOLLOOMOOLOO (NSW)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Sounds like:<\/b>\u00a0Someone had a bunch of spare Os and wanted to have some fun at the expense of American tourists.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in fact:<\/b>\u00a0A flash waterside suburb in Sydney that was reinvented from a run-down wharf. In the mid-\u201990s, when developers transformed the timber Finger Wharf into a model of industrial chic,\u00a0Woolloomooloo\u00a0<\/a>was suddenly on everybody\u2019s hot list. As well as boasting eight Os, the area is now home to flash boats, flash restaurants (Otto, Manta, China Doll), and a flash hotel (formerly the W, presently the Blue Sydney). The Woolloomooloo Bay Hotel is now similarly all chic and shiny, though the Bells Hotel retains some grit and live music.<\/span><\/p>\n

Named for:<\/b>\u00a0John Palmer\u2019s homestead, Wolloomooloo House, built in 1801. Palmer may have cobbled the name from different Aboriginal words, though it could be derived from Wallabahmullah, meaning a young black kangaroo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not to be confused with:<\/b>\u00a0Kooloonooka (WA), Moonyoonookah (WA), Oondooroo (Qld) and Oona-Woop-Woop (SA).<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting there:\u00a0<\/b>Turn right at Circular Quay and cut through the Royal Botanic Gardens \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

4. MT BUGGERY (VIC)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Sounds like:\u00a0<\/b>The surveying party had too much time on its hands.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in fact:\u00a0<\/b>A high point on a walking trail through Victoria\u2019s dramatic Alpine National Park.\u00a0Mt Buggery\u00a0<\/a>peaks at 1153m and lies about 15km east of the Mt Buller ski resort; walkers connect with it via the Crosscut Saw from Mt Howitt. Think trails through thick forests, steep climbs, stunning views \u2014 and general exhaustion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Named for: The irritation felt by a member of the Melbourne Walking Club, one Stewart Middleton in the 1930s. According to Alan Budge\u2019s book\u00a0No End to Walking<\/i>, \u201cStewart, perhaps not quite as fit as he could have been, was finding the going tough \u2026 faced with the prospect of yet another laborious climb he exploded with the words \u2018What another bugger! I\u2019ll call this mountain Mt Buggery.\u2019 \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Not to be confused with:\u00a0<\/b>Spanker Knob (Vic), Burrumbuttock (NSW) and Intercourse Island (WA).<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting there:\u00a0<\/b>Search \u201cCrosscut Saw\u201d and figure out your closest carpark to join the trail.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. USELESS LOOP (WA)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Sounds like:\u00a0<\/b>You\u2019re being given the run-around.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in fact:<\/b>\u00a0A company town that\u2019s anything but useless. Owned and operated by Japanese company Mitsui Salt, Useless Loop houses a giant evaporative farm using wind and sun to produce 1.6m tonnes of crystal-clear salt each year. Workers are served by a shop, a tavern and schools but the town is closed to the public \u2014 begging the question, why are we here? Well, it\u2019s because we\u2019re near the pristine waters of\u00a0Shark Bay\u00a0<\/a>in Western Australia, a World Heritage site that\u2019s also home to Monkey Mia (famous for its dolphins).<\/span><\/p>\n

Named for:\u00a0<\/b>A sandbar that prevented French explorers on the Baudin expedition from entering Shark Bay. The waters were labelled \u201cinutile\u201d or useless.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not to be confused with:<\/b>\u00a0Lost Hope (NSW), Desolation (SA) and Mt Despair (Vic).<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting there:<\/b>\u00a0Shark Bay is 320km drive from Geraldton or 700km from Perth.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

6. MANANGATANG (VIC)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Sounds like:\u00a0<\/b>Australia found hip-hop 100 years before anyone else. If this isn\u2019t a band name, we don\u2019t know what is.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in fact:<\/b>\u00a0A country town of 500 souls on the Mallee Highway.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve arrived at the\u00a0Manangatang\u00a0<\/a>crossroads you\u2019re either (a) getting your groove on in the car and repeating the word \u201cManangatang\u201d over and over, or (b) turning north to travel 50km to Robinvale. Robinvale is a playground on the Murray where the river makes an extraordinary loop around a 566ha island called Bumbang.<\/span><\/p>\n

Named for:\u00a0<\/b>Manang meaning \u201cland\u201d and kaaiti meaning \u201cwater from\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not to be confused with: Funkmeister monikers such as Jackalass (NSW), Crackenback (Vic) and Wonglepong (Qld).<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting there:<\/b>\u00a0Manangatang is 150km south of\u00a0Mildura.<\/span><\/p>\n

7. NOWHERE ELSE (TAS)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Sounds like:\u00a0<\/b>A great branding opportunity \u2014 \u201cThere\u2019s nowhere else like Nowhere Else\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in fact:\u00a0<\/b>A small community of farms gathered along\u00a0Nowhere Else<\/a>\u00a0Rd, 20 minutes south of Devonport. Nowhere Else is about as attractive as everywhere in Tasmania, complete with rich green farmland, narrow lanes that wouldn\u2019t look out of place in the Cotswolds and walloping Lake Barrington to the west.<\/span><\/p>\n

Named for: The fact the original road from Barrington ended up in a farmer\u2019s paddock and presumably \u201cwent nowhere else\u201d. Today, however, you can continue 6km down Nowhere Else Rd and arrive at Promised Land.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not to be confused with:\u00a0<\/b>Nowhere Else in South Australia. Doh!<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting there:\u00a0<\/b>Take the B14 out of Devonport until you reach the much-photographed signpost.<\/span><\/p>\n

8. COME BY CHANCE (NSW)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Sounds like:\u00a0<\/b>A lot more fun than going by bus.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in fact:\u00a0<\/b>A pretty, blink-and-you\u2019ll-miss-it agricultural town in northern NSW, one that is, unusually, often described as a village.<\/span><\/p>\n

Come By Chance\u00a0<\/a>is home to fewer than 200 people, but is significantly boosted once a year thanks to its popular picnic race meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Named for:\u00a0<\/b>William Colless\u2019s sheep station. He won something of a lottery when his sons put in for a parcel of land; people already had dibs on the rest of the properties that had been sectioned, so Colless thought it was entirely \u201ccome by chance\u201d. He obviously did well on raising sheep, since he came to own all of the village blocks including the post office, cemetery and police station.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not to be confused with:<\/b>\u00a0Happy Go Lucky (Vic),\u00a0Lottery Creek (Qld), Dice Rock (WA) and Casino (NSW).<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting there:\u00a0<\/b>Come By Chance is 100km north of Coonabarabran.<\/span><\/p>\n

9. XANTIPPE (WA)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Sounds like: A<\/b>\u00a0piece of vinyl by Olivia Newton-John that you have stashed somewhere in the shed.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in fact:\u00a0<\/b>A defunct town in the wheat \u2019n\u2019 sheep shire of\u00a0Dalwallinu<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Xantippe obviously did it hard, with its school located on a thoroughfare called Struggle St until it closed in 1940. Today, if you\u2019re at Xantippe, you\u2019re on a dirt road 50km from Dalwallinu on the Great Northern Highway and (to be frank) you\u2019re probably lost.<\/span><\/p>\n

Named for:<\/b>\u00a0A bad-tempered old bag who was married to Socrates \u2014 or a local Aboriginal word for waterholes. Xantippe is often (mistakenly) said to be Australia\u2019s only place name beginning with an X.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not to be confused with:\u00a0<\/b>Mt Xeromero (Qld), Xavier Reserve (SA), Xmas Well (WA) XXXX Bore (NT) and Xanthorrhoea Sanctuary (SA).<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting there:<\/b>\u00a0Xantippe is three hours north of\u00a0Perth.<\/span><\/p>\n

10. BUBBLE BUBBLE (NT)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Sounds like: New York, New York \u2014 so good they named it twice.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in fact: An outstation on the banks of the Chinaman Creek in Keep River National Park.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although almost unknown outside of NT, Keep River National Park is similar to that more famous double-B destination, the Bungle Bungles. Take the park\u2019s Jarnem Loop Walk and you\u2019ll find yourself in smaller but almost identical \u201cbeehive\u201d landforms carved by wind and water.<\/span><\/p>\n

Named for: Water. That bubbles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not to be confused with: Bong Bong (NSW), Book Book (WA) and Booti Booti (NSW).<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting there: The park is 470km west of Katherine. The park entrance is on the NT\/WA border.<\/span><\/p>\n
