In the mid-\u201990s, when developers transformed the timber Finger Wharf into a model of industrial chic,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sydney.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-label=\"Woolloomooloo \" data-tgev-container=\"article-body-link-clicks\" data-tgev-order=\"4\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\">Woolloomooloo\u00a0<\/a>was suddenly on everybody\u2019s hot list. As well as boasting eight Os, the area is now home to flash boats, flash restaurants (Otto, Manta, China Doll), and a flash hotel (formerly the W, presently the Blue Sydney). The Woolloomooloo Bay Hotel is now similarly all chic and shiny, though the Bells Hotel retains some grit and live music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U60875115396JBH\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>Named for:<\/b>\u00a0John Palmer\u2019s homestead, Wolloomooloo House, built in 1801. Think trails through thick forests, steep climbs, stunning views \u2014 and general exhaustion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U608751153960c\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Named for: The irritation felt by a member of the Melbourne Walking Club, one Stewart Middleton in the 1930s. According to Alan Budge\u2019s book\u00a0<i>No End to Walking<\/i>, \u201cStewart, perhaps not quite as fit as he could have been, was finding the going tough \u2026 faced with the prospect of yet another laborious climb he exploded with the words \u2018What another bugger! I\u2019ll call this mountain Mt Buggery.\u2019 \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U60875115396dBG\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b id=\"U60875115396KsH\">Not to be confused with:\u00a0<\/b>Spanker Knob (Vic), Burrumbuttock (NSW) and Intercourse Island (WA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U60875115396VhD\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b id=\"U608751153969\">Getting there:\u00a0<\/b>Search \u201cCrosscut Saw\u201d and figure out your closest carpark to join the trail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U60875115396AV\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>5. USELESS LOOP (WA)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U60875115396h6C\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>Sounds like:\u00a0<\/b>You\u2019re being given the run-around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U60875115396tDC\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>But in fact:<\/b>\u00a0A company town that\u2019s anything but useless. Owned and operated by Japanese company Mitsui Salt, Useless Loop houses a giant evaporative farm using wind and sun to produce 1.6m tonnes of crystal-clear salt each year. Workers are served by a shop, a tavern and schools but the town is closed to the public \u2014 begging the question, why are we here? Well, it\u2019s because we\u2019re near the pristine waters of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharkbay.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-label=\"Shark Bay \" data-tgev-container=\"article-body-link-clicks\" data-tgev-order=\"6\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\">Shark Bay\u00a0<\/a>in Western Australia, a World Heritage site that\u2019s also home to Monkey Mia (famous for its dolphins).<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U60875115396DmC\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>Named for:\u00a0<\/b>A sandbar that prevented French explorers on the Baudin expedition from entering Shark Bay. Nowhere Else is about as attractive as everywhere in Tasmania, complete with rich green farmland, narrow lanes that wouldn\u2019t look out of place in the Cotswolds and walloping Lake Barrington to the west.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U608751153969nG\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Named for: The fact the original road from Barrington ended up in a farmer\u2019s paddock and presumably \u201cwent nowhere else\u201d. Today, however, you can continue 6km down Nowhere Else Rd and arrive at Promised Land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U60875115396NUF\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b id=\"U60875115396JD\">Not to be confused with:\u00a0<\/b>Nowhere Else in South Australia. Doh!<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U60875115396BdF\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>Getting there:\u00a0<\/b>Take the B14 out of Devonport until you reach the much-photographed signpost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U608751153960QC\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>8. COME BY CHANCE (NSW)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U60875115396jjB\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b id=\"U60875115396muF\">Sounds like:\u00a0<\/b>A lot more fun than going by bus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U60875115396fDC\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b id=\"U60875115396a0H\">But in fact:\u00a0<\/b>A pretty, blink-and-you\u2019ll-miss-it agricultural town in northern NSW, one that is, unusually, often described as a village.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitnsw.com\/events\/comebychance-picnic-races\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-label=\"Come By Chance \" data-tgev-container=\"article-body-link-clicks\" data-tgev-order=\"9\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\">Come By Chance\u00a0<\/a>is home to fewer than 200 people, but is significantly boosted once a year thanks to its popular picnic race meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U60875115396qdC\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b id=\"U60875115396XXB\">Named for:\u00a0<\/b>William Colless\u2019s sheep station. He won something of a lottery when his sons put in for a parcel of land; people already had dibs on the rest of the properties that had been sectioned, so Colless thought it was entirely \u201ccome by chance\u201d. He obviously did well on raising sheep, since he came to own all of the village blocks including the post office, cemetery and police station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U60875115396tVG\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>Not to be confused with:<\/b>\u00a0Happy Go Lucky (Vic),\u00a0Lottery Creek (Qld), Dice Rock (WA) and Casino (NSW).<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U60875115396tGF\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b id=\"U60875115396eoH\">Getting there:\u00a0<\/b>Come By Chance is 100km north of Coonabarabran.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"U60875115396MNI\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>9.
