How this came to be constitutes a vital part of the evolution of modern Sri Lanka.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">The story begins with the British invasion of the island in the late 18th century and conquest of the lowlands, hitherto occupied by the Dutch. Unlike previous European invaders, the British were <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/books.google.lk\/books?id=OnaC26k9KG8C&amp;printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&amp;q=wellesley%20preferred&amp;f=false\">more concerned with<\/a> Ceylon\u2019s\u00a0 strategic position in relation to India, and so expedience and budgetary constraints played a major part in their decision-making on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">After the British occupied the country 1796, they appointed <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1FucY-iWvQKpyzNmbqzQWHX3Z7WdLlUegjMFTcg72ZiM\/edit?usp=sharing\">Dutch Burghers<\/a>, descendants of the Europeans employed by the former colonial power, to positions in the administration,\u00a0 to <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cairn.info\/journal-annales-de-demographie-historique-2011-2-page-127.htm\">mediate<\/a> between them and the native population. The historian, lawyer and politician <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.srilankaguardian.org\/2011\/02\/colvin-in-his-many-dimensions.html\">Colvin R de Silva<\/a> noted, in his monumental study of the early period of British rule <em>Ceylon Under the British Occupation <\/em>(pp205-208)<em>, <\/em>that the British brought in East India Company <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/apparatchik\">apparatchiks<\/a>, <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/books.google.lk\/books?id=rk0oAAAAYAAJ&amp;pg=PA72&amp;dq=ceylon+malabar+subordinates&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjOooX6wav1AhXi63MBHUPCA4kQ6AF6BAgEEAI#v=onepage&amp;q=ceylon%20malabar%20subordinates&amp;f=false\">mostly South Indian natives<\/a>,\u00a0 to replace native \u201cheadmen\u201dof the Mudliyar and Arachchi classes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">This led, de Silva noted, to a revolt in 1797, following which the British built up a privileged minority of \u201cnatives\u201d to supplement the Burghers in the higher altitudes of society. This privileged elite came from the most educated members of society, a disproportionate number of whom were Tamil, due to a peculiar circumstance of history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>American Missionaries<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/re-written\">According to de Silva\u2019s <\/a><em>Ceylon Under the British Occupation<\/em><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/re-written\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">, when the British <\/a>government<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/re-written\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> slashed expenditure on education on the island due to budgetary constraints, it relied heavily on Christian missionaries to carry out educational activities<\/a>. A significant portion of this effort was made by the American Ceylon Mission (ACM), established by <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2016\/06\/20\/the-american-missionaries-and-jaffna-tamils\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rev. Samuel Newell in 1813<\/a>, in Jaffna, in the Tamil-dominated north of Ceylon, as part of the evangelising\u00a0 effort of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Although Americans had been visiting the island <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/23731152\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">since 1788, as spice traders and whalers<\/a>,\u00a0 the British, <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/uthr.org\/Rajan\/selfdet.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">citing the ongoing war with France<\/a>, refused to allow the Americans to proselytise elsewhere \u2014 a ban which lasted far longer than the war of 1809-1814, the penultimate in a series of <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/summary\/Napoleonic-Wars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Napoleonic Wars<\/a> waged all over the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-107727 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.roar.media\/assets\/2AiQrq5cqE5T0h4P_04.jpg\" alt=\"BBC GLOBAL QUESTIONS - SRI LANKA\" width=\"600\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Rev Samuel Newell, who founded the American Ceylon Mission Image via Wikipedia<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">In 1816, the ACM established a school at \u2018Tillipally\u2019 (as they called the town of Tellippallai), today\u2019s <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en-academic.com\/dic.nsf\/enwiki\/8329980\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Union College<\/a>, also in Jaffna, in the Tamil-dominated north. In 1823, they inaugurated \u00a0the <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en-academic.com\/dic.nsf\/enwiki\/7673601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Batticotta Seminary<\/a> (which evolved into <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/jaffnacollege1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jaffna College<\/a>), Ceylon\u2019s first modern university-level institution at Vaddukoddai, also in the north. The next year, prominent ACM missionary <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.librarycompany.org\/women\/portraits_religion\/winslow.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harriet Winslow<\/a> (ancestress of later Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles and CIA head Allen Welsh Dulles) founded <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/uduvilgirlscollege.lk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uduvil Girls\u2019 College<\/a>, Asia\u2019s first girls\u2019 boarding school, in the Tamil-dominated north.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">In 1848,\u00a0 American doctor and missionary\u00a0 <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/kanaga_sritharan.tripod.com\/greensf.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Samuel Fiske Green <\/a>opened <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/250.ps.columbia.edu\/scrapbook\/samuel-fisk-green-medical-pioneer-south-asia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the first modern medical school<\/a> and teaching hospital (<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/archives\/7752\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Asia\u2019s second modern teaching hospital<\/a>, which later came to be known as\u00a0 the Green Memorial Hospital) in Ceylon, at Manipay \u2014\u00a0again, in the northern part of the island. Image via Wikipedia<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">The ACM weren\u2019t the only missionaries making inroads in the country; the Wesleyan Methodist Mission (a British Methodist missionary society) already had bridgeheads in the Eastern Province, and followed on the heels of the ACM, founding <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/roar.media\/english\/life\/history\/eleven-of-the-oldest-missionary-established-schools-in-jaffna\">Jaffna Central College<\/a>, in the north, in 1817. The Anglicans (from the Church of England) also established <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/sjcjaffna.com\/our-college.html\">St John\u2019s College, <\/a>in Jaffna in 1823, and it was the Roman Catholic Church that attended to the educational needs of its flock in Jaffna long after the ACM.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-107720 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.roar.media\/assets\/6IodsHpekWKIfzIt_03.jpg\" alt=\"DRESS-of-Women-1\" width=\"600\" height=\"315\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">The Batticola Seminary, which is now Jaffna College. Image via Wikipedia<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>English Handles<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">These activities resulted in<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/30027495\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> profound changes<\/a> in the traditional, caste-based Hindu structure of society. An English-speaking, <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ru.nl\/rich\/news-events\/news\/redactionele\/phd-defence-jaffna-tamils-colonised-sub-elite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mainly Christian elite<\/a> emerged in the northern peninsula. The missionaries, when baptising converts, would give them Christian names and surnames, often those of sponsors of the mission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">These names could be Biblical \u2014\u00a0such as James, Paul, Simon, and Solomon. Anglicans and Methodists often received English surnames, such as Crossette, Crowther, Handy, Spencer, Williams and Watson. Those baptised by the ACM, however, invariably received the English monikers of eminent American Protestant families, mostly originating from <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/sangam.org\/2010\/04\/ACMission.php?uid=3922\">New England<\/a>. These included Armstrong, Arnold, Barr, Buell, Chapman, Cooke, Cotton, Curtis, Dwight, Hensman, Hoole, Hopkins, Lawton, Lodge, Macintyre, Martyn, Mather, Mills, Nevins, Niles, Phillips, Riggs, Sanders, Stone, Strong, Taylor, Wadsworth and Wilson.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Catholics were generally named after Christian saints, notably Anthony, Bastian, David, Diego, Emilianus, George, John and Joseph, often tagging \u201cpillai\u201d (child) at the end; or Biblical entities, such as <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christianity.com\/wiki\/angels-and-demons\/what-is-a-cherub-the-cherubim-in-the-bible.html\">Cherubim<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Names Of Note<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Generations later, many people reverted to their Tamil names, either out of patriotism, or for expediency. For instance, <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jaffnaroyalfamily.org\/elangai.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">E.M.V. Naganathan<\/a>, the eminent politician, was <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ceylontamils.com\/search\/family.php?individualID=1247\">originally Hensman<\/a>. Several others decided to adopt double-barrelled surnames, with their baptismal monikers connected to their ancestral Hindu handles by hyphens, for example Crossette-Thambiah, Nevins-Selvadurai and Philips-Arasakumar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">\u201c[In fact] all the Protestant Christian Tamils are related or connected,\u201d Sereno Barr-Kumarakulasinghe, a eco-tourism entrepreneur with such a double-barrelled name, told <em>Roar <\/em>Media. For example, he said, his own family has connections with the Mather, Page, and Phillips families, as well as with Federal Party founder <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/tamilnation.org\/hundredtamils\/chelva.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S.J.V. Chelvanayakam<\/a>, who in turn had Wilson connections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Exemplifying these relationships, the Paul family of doctors, originating in Manipay (patriarch, William Paul being one of Green\u2019s <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/1960medicalbatchcolombo.blogspot.com\/2013\/02\/green-memorial-manipay-sri-lanka.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first medical<\/a> graduates), who occupied <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/island.lk\/when-it-was-known-as-the-harley-street-of-ceylon-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">several residences<\/a> in Ward Place, has links with the Cooke, Crosette-Thambiah, Edwards, Phillips, Snell and McGowan-Tampoe families. The <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldgenweb.org\/lkawgw\/gen5031.html\">Cooke family<\/a> married into the Abraham, Arnold, Black, Francis, Lawrence, Mather, Strong\u00a0 and Wilson families, while the <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ceylontamils.com\/search\/family.php?individualID=4272\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Page family<\/a> has ties to the Dwight, Gardiner, Mather, and Strong families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Among this disparate community of English-named Tamils, several stand out in history \u2014\u00a0from Jaffna College co-founder James Prince Cooke, pioneer photographer S. K. Lawton, pioneer surgeon S.C. Paul and Senator Chittamapalam Gardiner to mathematician and physicist Christie Jayaratnam Eliezer, author of the 1978 Constitution Alfred Jeyaratnam Wilson and current cricket commentator Russel Arnold.
