Richard Simon\u2019s \u2018history of Lanka\u2019s greatest public school\u2019, is an epic poem!<\/span>
\nEpic, in its reach; poetic, in its lyricism, this towering, magnificent opus is a pearl, of both history and literature. \u201cSTC\u201d touches the soul and core, of historophile, linguaphile and bibliophile; Christian, Lankan and, above all, Thomian.<\/span><\/p>\n

This book is not a chronicle of STC history. Keble and Billimoria served that purpose amply. Neither is it intended to evoke feelings of nostalgia in Old Thomians wishing to relive the \u2018best years of their lives\u2019.\u201dIt is more ambitious.<\/span><\/p>\n

The story begins in 1801, the year \u201cmodern, Western-style education\u201d was established in British Ceylon. Fifty years of Lankan history precedes the foundation of St. Thomas\u2019s College. This pattern \u2013 Thomian history presented against a backdrop of Lankan history \u2013 prevails throughout.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cSTC\u201d examines, in great detail, the profound effect \u201chistorical and political events affecting the country\u201d had on the College. It records how St. Thomas\u2019 changed \u201coften reluctantly\u2026\u201d as \u201cthe habits, customs and hopes\u201d of the country\u2019s rulers and her people changed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Simon\u2019s \u201cSTC\u201d is packed with inspiring and satisfying information about the many Thomian \u2018sons\u2019 who influenced the history of the country, beginning with the [attainment] of \u201cmature estate\u201d of its first alumni! The reader is reminded: \u201cOf independent Ceylon\u2019s first five Prime Ministers, four were Old Thomians\u2026only the most obvious of many conduits through which the influence of Thomia flowed out into the country as a whole.\u201d Warden de Saram\u2019s proclamation, on Old Boys\u2019 Day, 1949, was oft justified.\u00a0\u201c\u2026whenever a thing is done for the first time in Ceylon, it is a Thomian who is called upon to do it\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The STC OBA\u2019s service to and influence on College affairs is thoroughly documented; her story told in lavish prose. The reader will watch the Association grow, from Warden Miller\u2019s \u201cdesire\u201d (1886) and humble beginnings \u2013 formed \u201cwith a view to the strengthening of the ties which should bind a man to the place where\u2026he has learned\u2026the most valuable lessons of life\u201d \u2013 to the potent force for good it soon became and remains to this day.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Richard Simon joined STC \u2018Prep\u2019 in 1964. He was six years old. He moved to STC Mt. Lavinia in 1966 and continued thereat until 1978. Simon was an active member of the Debating, Drama and Parliamentary Societies and a frequent literary contributor to the College Magazine. As a historian, Simon has published well-received histories of the John Keells Group (2006) and the Ceylon Tea Industry (2017).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy particular interest in is the social, cultural and commercial history of the British period in Ceylon\u201d, Simon affirms.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other published books Simon has authored include\u00a0Sri Lanka: The Resplendent Isle<\/em>\u00a0(Singapore, 1989, Times Editions) and\u00a0Sri Lanka: The Island from Above<\/em>\u00a0(Colombo, 2014 & 2017, D.S.R.). His short fiction has been published by Penguin India and Himal Southasian. For the past four decades, Simon has been engaged in writing and editing books and articles about Lanka\u2019s history and culture. He was particularly closely involved as editor in Howard Martenstyn\u2019s very successful\u00a0Marine Mammals of Sri Lanka<\/em>\u00a0(Colombo, 2013, Citrus).<\/span><\/p>\n

His research in Britain for this book included stints in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, the archives of St John\u2019s College, Cambridge, and the archives of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. At Mount Lavinia, Simon worked for five years (2014-19) in the College Library, reading every extant issue of the Magazine, as well as various Thomian Fair and Royal-Thomian Souvenirs. He spent some time at S. Thomas\u2019 Prep as well, going through their old magazines and records. Corinne King of Victoria in, Australia (daughter of the late D.N. Pereira, long-serving teacher at STC) helped fill in many of the lacunae in the College Magazine collection.<\/span><\/p>\n

Simon is a \u201cresearcher, who takes fresh perspectives on traditional conclusions\u201d \u2013 a \u2018myth-buster\u2019. Yet, he does not contrive to be one. An excerpt from his Preface reads: \u201cFor the first seventy-five years of its existence, the name of my old school was customarily rendered as \u2018St. Thomas\u2019 College\u2019 in keeping with the spelling and stylistic conventions of the day. For reasons that are\u2026(\u2026explained in Chapter 39), a new convention was adopted in the mid-1920s and remains in use to this day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThomians young and Thomians old\u201d, will embrace Simon\u2019s history and applaud him for telling it. They will be comfortable, though \u201cThis book is about St. Thomas\u2019s College \u2026 nearly half of its chapters are not about the school at all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

They will affirm, as the author does: \u201c[Lanka] has enjoyed great profit of St. Thomas\u2019s College; and the rarer and more threatened the ideas and values the school enshrines come to be in the future, the more valuable a resource it will become.\u201d (Epilogue).<\/span><\/p>\n

They will treasure \u2018STC\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n
