MY DYING CONSCIENCE<\/span>

 <\/p>\n

Sometimes in the dark of the night<\/span>
\nI visit my conscience<\/span>
\nTo see if it is still breathing<\/span>
\nFor its dying a slow death<\/span>
\nEvery day.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

When I pay for a meal in a fancy place<\/span>
\nAn amount which is perhaps the monthly income<\/span>
\nOf the guard who holds the door open<\/span>
\nAnd quickly I shrug away that thought<\/span>
\nIt dies a little.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

When I buy vegetables from the vendor<\/span>
\nAnd his son \u201cchhotu\u201d smilingly weighs the potatoes<\/span>
\nChhotu, a small child, who should be studying at school<\/span>
\nI look the other way<\/span>
\nIt dies a little.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

When I am decked up in a designer dress<\/span>
\nA dress that cost a bomb<\/span>
\nAnd I see a woman at the crossing<\/span>
\nIn tatters,trying unsuccessfully to save her dignity<\/span>
\nAnd I immediately roll up my window<\/span>
\nIt dies a little.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

When at Christmas I buy expensive gifts for my children<\/span>
\nOn return, I see half clad children<\/span>
\nWith empty stomach and hungry eyes<\/span>
\nSelling Santa caps at red light<\/span>
\nI try to salve my conscience by buying some, yet<\/span>
\nIt dies a little.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

When my sick maid sends her daughter to work<\/span>
\nMaking her bunk school<\/span>
\nI know I should tell her to go back<\/span>
\nBut I look at the loaded sink and dirty dishes<\/span>
\nAnd I tell myself that is just for a couple of days<\/span>
\nIt dies a little.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

When I give my son the freedom<\/span>
\nTo come home late from a party<\/span>
\nAnd yet when my daughter asks<\/span>
\nI tell her it is not safe<\/span>
\nI raise my voice when she questions why<\/span>
\nIt dies a little.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

When I hear about a rape<\/span>
\nor a murder of a child,<\/span>
\nI feel sad, yet a little thankful that it\u2019s not my child<\/span>
\nI can not look at myself in the mirror<\/span>
\nIt dies a little.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

When people fight over caste creed and religion<\/span>
\nI feel hurt and helpless<\/span>
\nI tell myself that my country is going to the dogs<\/span>
\nI blame the corrupt politicians<\/span>
\nAbsolving myself of all responsibilities<\/span>
\nIt dies a little.<\/span><\/p>\n

When my city is choked Breathing is dangerous in the smog ridden Delhi<\/span>
\nI take my car to work daily<\/span>
\nNot taking the metro,not trying car pool<\/span>
\nOne car won\u2019t make a difference, I think<\/span>
\nIt dies a little.<\/span><\/p>\n

So when in the dark of the night<\/span>
\nI visit my conscience<\/span>
\nAnd find it still breathing<\/span>
\nI am surprised<\/span>
\nFor, with my own hands<\/span>
\nDaily, bit by bit, I bury it.<\/span><\/p>\n
