King was close its subjects. The country had <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">been divided into many parts and there were Kings in these <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">provinces. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Kingdoms have moved to many places within this <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">small Island for very short periods. Dambadeniya and Gampola are such examples. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">With regards to my note <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">this month, Gannoruwa <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">is a significant place in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">our history. This place is <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">located between Peradeniya and Kandy, bordering the river Mahaweli. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Known for its fertile <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">earth, today, it is a centre <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">for agricultural activities linked to the Department of Agriculture. It is historical for the final battle that prevented the western power Portuguese entering the Kingdom of Kandy was at <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">this point where they were to cross the river to enter Kandy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The deadly battle killed many Portuguese and thereafter they <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">never attempted to capture the hill country. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Gannaoruwa was a key place to cross the river. \u201cOruwa\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">(Boat) was the only method to do this. So the \u201cthotiya\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">(boatman) was an important person in the society then. The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">boatmen lived by the river and helped people to cross the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">river anytime of the day for a small fee. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">On this day, the one who came to the river was King Buwanekabahu of Gampola on his way to Kandy. Gampola was <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">also a Kingdom of our country. Obviously, he would have <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">come with his entourage. He looked for a boat. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The boatman <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">was a little away and the King called the boatman. The boatman could not hear it.
