It is <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">not unusual to have intricate discussions about coffee and chat endlessly regarding the flavours of your favourite cup at a cafe. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Sri Lanka was also once a global coffee producing powerhouse, known <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">for making nuanced and flavourful cups of coffee. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">It is a history that <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">outlines the global connectedness of the island of Ceylon. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Coffee beans possibly first arrived in Sri Lanka in the distant past from <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Yemen or Ethiopia, likely brought to Sri Lanka by Moorish traders. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Commercial coffee cultivation on the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">island was first undertaken during <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Dutch Ceylon and later refined under <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">British administrators who oversaw <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">the height of coffee production, before a coffee blight destroyed plantations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">By the 1800s the coffee trade <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">brought together Moors, Scotsmen, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Englishmen, Dutch traders, Indonesians and Sinhalese estate workers. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Facing labour shortages on estates, migrant Tamil workers contributed <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">to the growth of Ceylonese coffee industries by seasonally arriving and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">labouring under harsh conditions. Their determined treks through the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">dangerous jungles of Ceylon on their way to estates, where many fell <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">to wildlife and disease are legendary in their own account. These communities, their cultural contributions and labour greatly influenced the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">trajectory of Sri Lankan history. Descendants of these individuals still <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">influence the tea industry as excellent pickers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Coffee production peaked in the 1860\u2019s with Sri Lanka supplying a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">third of all coffee imports to Europe, making Ceylon coffee world <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">famous. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">At one time, Sri Lankan coffee was so highly regarded that farms <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">around the world began including the name Ceylon in their own coffee estates. For instance, some farms in the Americas named their <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">coffee \u201cFinca Ceylan\u201d. \u201cCeylon Estate\u201d coffee in an attempt to gain <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">credibility for their crop. Some plantations in Central America still <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">retain this name. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Lingering impacts of this potent past of coffee growing still remain in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Sri Lanka. For instance iced kopi, popularised during Dutch Ceylon <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">continues to be regarded as a common snack item in Sri Lanka. The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">word \u201ckopi\u201d itself is of Dutch origin and the term \u201ckopi kale\u201d, to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">mean a distant past, is also a reference to Sri Lanka\u2019s illustrious history <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">of coffee growing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">It is also not uncommon to find coffee trees growing wild in backyards and forests. Some of these trees are likely descendants of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">original trees that survived Coffee rust in the 1800\u2019s making these trees <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">truly ancient micro-lot speciality coffees. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">We have had the pleasure of harvesting, processing, and tasting the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">coffee from these trees and we can attest to their deliciousness. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The coffee trade connects Sri Lanka to the entire world, from ancient <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Arab traders to the Dutchmen and their colonies of Indonesia, from <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">the Scottish and British planters, to Tamil communities that settled in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Sri Lanka for its coffee harvest. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Speciality coffee is now coming full circle and making a comeback in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Sri Lanka.
