One of these is <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/gZ-grz13ViE?t=30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>k\u00e1friinha<\/em><\/a>, a social square dance comprising European melodies, African and Asian groove, and Portuguese medieval poetic influences. As this music became popular across the island during the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century it resulted in the further intercultural exchange which was at roots of Sri Lankan baila.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The lyrics for <em>k\u00e1friinha <\/em>songs are in <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/fb327d42-2e3d-4900-aa48-e9784d7c8384\/content\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sri Lanka Portuguese<\/a>, a language which grew out of contact between Portuguese and local people in Sri Lanka during the colonial era. Once a lingua franca across the island it has been a mothertongue for Portuguese Burghers, Dutch Burghers and Afro-Sri Lankans since the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century. Currently the language is spoken as an everyday language only by Portuguese Burghers in the east but is considered endangered due to the pressures of Tamil, Sinhala as well as English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Nevertheless, Trincomalee born and bred Derrick Keil is part of a younger generation of fluent speakers of the language which he speaks in addition to Sinhala, Tamil and English. \u201cI really want to make new Portuguese Burgher creations as well as remake versions of traditional <em>k\u00e1friinha <\/em>songs\u201d, he said, reflecting his passion for bringing together the old and the new.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-110075 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sri-lankan-bila-e1678342943628.png\" alt=\"sri lankan bila\" width=\"600\" height=\"290\" \/><em>Left: A moment from the Minha Amor clip. Photo on right by Mahesh White-Radhakrishnan.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><u>What to listen out for in <em>Minha Amor<\/em><\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>Minha Amor <\/em>brings refreshing reminders of the richness of Portuguese Burgher culture. While the clip and costuming both reflect popular tropes about the Portuguese prevalent in other baila songs (such as the delightful <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lniu8YJsVS4?t=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kaprigngna by Corrine Almeida<\/a>), the music in <em>Minha Amor<\/em> also strongly echoes Portuguese Burgher culture and music history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The song features two Portuguese Burgher songs. The first is an old Portuguese Burgher song <em>kur\u00e1\u00e1njaniita<\/em> (also spelt <em>Coranjanita<\/em>) sometimes known in the community as <em>Chik\u00f3\u00f3ti <\/em>(instrumental version by Batticaloa musicians <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elararchive.org\/uncategorized\/IO_5cb08d63-0f21-458e-b965-f07b5ba609f2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>). It is a slow song (in a kind of waltz time) traditionally sung as a significant part of wedding rituals. <em>Kur\u00e1\u00e1njaniita<\/em> is known to baila lovers through upbeat versions in tracks by <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rXYwTsosOHE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Desmond De Silva<\/a> and <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MEdhkAOCdXs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AE Manoharan<\/a> and <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RZCtitVupRs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saman De Silva<\/a>. An 1895 text described it as \u201cone of the oldest of their tunes\u201d highlighting its significance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Also in the medley is a modern <em>k\u00e1friinha <\/em>song written in the 1970s, <em>Vii minha \u00e1moor pabayl\u00e1\u00e1 <\/em>\u201ccome my love to dance\u201d, attributed to Clarence Hendrick from Batticaloa. This song drew on the tune for the popular Sinhala baila song <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LZNOLM6E4vs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Mee Wadayaki Jeewite<\/em><\/a> (attributed to C.T Fernando, Sisira Senarathne and Karunarathne Abayasekara) which was released in the late 1960s. This reflects an interesting case of borrowing back given the role of <em>k\u00e1friinha <\/em>in baila\u2019s development. Keil sings both <em>Vii minha <\/em>and <em>Mee Wadayaki Jeevithe <\/em>bringin out this melodic resemblance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>Vii minha \u00e1moor pabayl\u00e1\u00e1<\/em> is mainly performed in Batticaloa but is also known in Trincomalee. While it normally starts with the more serene chorus Keil\u2019s wanted to do something different starting with the first verse which lifted the song and brought out the scope of its poetry:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>fuula da r\u00f3\u00f3sa, f\u00f3\u00f3ya teem veerdi, doos t\u00e1\u00e1m \u00e1\u00e1lri yanasa<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>\u00e1siley n\u00f3sa \u00e1moor yakresa n\u00f3\u00f3s teem ooy ungaley<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The rose has leaves of green and both were born from trees,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Like that our love grew and today we are as one<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-110076 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/sri-lankan-bila-2-e1678342960210.png\" alt=\"sri lankan bila\" width=\"600\" height=\"295\" \/><em>Left: Portuguese Burgher musicians from Batticaloa including Remina Andrado, Frida Sellar and Jacinta de Silva all daughters of Clarence Hendrick, his son-in-law Iva Andrado (violin), Edward Outschoorn (rab\u00e1\u00e1na) and Noel Sellar (sal\u00e1\u00e1ri) sing for the Documentation of Sri Lanka Portuguese project. Photos by Mahesh White-Radhakrishnan.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Also featured in <em>Minha Amor <\/em>is <em>Velanda Mozambicu, <\/em>another old <em>k\u00e1friinha <\/em>tune which was well known in the 1850s by which time <em>k\u00e1friinha <\/em>was a popular dance across the island. This tune frequently features in baila songs including as an interlude in the 1978 hit <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PVpaa5pa0jI?t=74\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Ayamma Kothaa Giya<\/em><\/a> and is arguably one of the quintessential <em>k\u00e1friinha <\/em>tunes frequently encountered in baila tracks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><u>Looking to the future<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>Minha Amor<\/em> marks an important moment in bringing <em>k\u00e1friinha <\/em>further into conversation with the broader Sri Lankan mainstream, attracting coverage from across the world including <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.publico.pt\/2023\/02\/21\/p3\/cronica\/reivindicar-lingua-minoritaria-2039415\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in Portugal for International Mother Language Day.<\/a> Following this Keil hopes to broaden that reach even further with a multilingual song in Sri Lanka Portuguese, Tamil and Sinhala. Such efforts reflect a desire among the younger generation for their culture and language to have greater visibility and to situate it more within broader Sri Lankan and global culture evident in <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/srilankaportuguese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sri Lanka Portuguese language teaching on Instagram<\/a>, <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/wordswithoutborders.org\/read\/article\/2021-10\/october-2021-se-asian-creole-languages-my-beloved-lady-balthazaar-cardoso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sri Lanka Portuguese oral poetry<\/a>, demonstrations of rituals such as the <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KCXKr8cVsvI&amp;t=18s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Way of the Cross in Sri Lanka Portuguese<\/a> and <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzsprout.com\/1886223\/10690584\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">podcast appearances<\/a>, all an efflorescence of Portuguese Burgher cultural expression which will likely raise further awareness of their language and culture in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>Dr. Mahesh White-Radhakrishnan (they\/them) is a singer and scholar of language and music based at Sydney Conservatorium of Music. They are the 2022 National Folk Fellow and winner of the ABC Top 5 for the Arts in 2022 and are a member of the Documentation of Sri Lanka Portuguese (DSLP) project team from the University of Lisbon led by Associate Professor Hugo Cardoso.
