ANGI HIGH<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"_1665V _2q-Vk\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-testid=\"body-content\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Born in New Zealand but raised in his parents\u2019 homeland, Ehelepola is a member of what the latest report into diversity from Screen Australia classifies as the Southern and Central Asian group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">According to the\u00a0<i>Seeing Ourselves Report<\/i>, which is released today, that group makes up around 7 per cent of the Australian population as a whole, but just 2.8 per cent of main characters<strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V _2q-Vk\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-testid=\"body-content\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In 15 years of acting in Australia, says Ehelepola, \u201c<em>T<\/em><em>he Newsreader<\/em>\u00a0was one of the few times I\u2019d had a role that wasn\u2019t about my ethnic background. As an artist, that is very validating.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">But in the two years since, he adds, it\u2019s become far more common \u2013 for him at least. \u201cI haven\u2019t stopped working in roles that are pushing cultural barriers and aren\u2019t subscribing to tokenism,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_112090\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112090\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/not-so-black-and-white-the-changing-face-of-australian-film-and-tv-20230410-p5cz9t.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-112090 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ffx.io\/images\/$zoom_0.24%2C$multiply_1.9577%2C$ratio_1.5%2C$width_756%2C$x_115%2C$y_96\/t_crop_custom\/q_62%2Cf_auto\/77d842c7d478a39e92613ecbe96a98cd70812b2c\" alt=\"High blood pressure\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-112090\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Christiaan Van Vuuren, Matt Okine and Harriet Dyer in The Other Guy.CREDIT: STAN<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The second\u00a0<em>Seeing Ourselves Report<\/em>\u00a0covers the years 2016-2021, and examines 3072 main characters across 361 scripted programs (drama, comedy and children\u2019s, but not animation) made for TV, streamers and online platforms such as YouTube and TikTok. Netflix\u2019s 2022 series\u00a0<i>Heartbreak High<\/i>, in which the 1990s series was reimagined with a groundbreaking commitment to diversity, was not included as it fell outside the five-year survey period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The first report, in 2016, covered 1961 characters in 199 scripted programs broadcast in the years 2011-15 (the increase in program and character numbers is largely attributable to the rise of streaming and commissioned content for online platforms in the intervening period).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">And while the new report finds diversity is increasing in all areas, it also concludes there\u2019s plenty of work still to be done before what\u2019s on our screens mirrors the reality of modern Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">There are now twice as many main characters of a non-European background than there were five years ago, and First Nations characters are roughly twice as prevalent on our TV screens as they are in the general population. The titles considered had seven main characters each on average.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThere have been increases in the levels of diversity among main characters in TV drama since our 2016 study, including increased representation of First Nations, disabled and LGBTIQ+ characters, and a doubling of non\u2011European representation,\u201d the report\u2019s authors noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V _2q-Vk\" data-testid=\"body-content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">However, a number of Australia\u2019s non-Anglo communities remain under\u2011represented on screen. Among the least represented are people with Indian, Chinese, Filipino and Vietnamese ancestry. Perhaps more surprisingly, some European nationalities are also under-represented, including people with German, Dutch and Italian ancestry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">About one-quarter of Australian TV dramas in the survey period featured a main cast of only Anglo\u2011Celtic characters. That was, however, an improvement on the first survey, where one-third were exclusively populated by white Australians.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_112090\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112090\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/not-so-black-and-white-the-changing-face-of-australian-film-and-tv-20230410-p5cz9t.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-112090 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ffx.io\/images\/$zoom_0.352%2C$multiply_1.9577%2C$ratio_1.5%2C$width_756%2C$x_0%2C$y_23\/t_crop_custom\/q_62%2Cf_auto\/879a45bb0f23b9acb4373dfe2563707b44e0b914\" alt=\"High blood pressure\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-112090\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Basil Firea, Oli Pizzey-Stratford and Jade Knight in The Legend of Burnout Barry. Characters with a disability remain massively under-represented on our screen.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"_1665V _2q-Vk\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-testid=\"body-content\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In the real world, 47 per cent of Australians are from a non Anglo-Celtic background.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Disability remains very much under\u2011represented in TV drama compared with the Australian population, the report found, with just 3.9 per cent of actors in main roles publicly identifying as disabled. Around 18 per cent of the Australian population reports living with a disability.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V _2q-Vk\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-testid=\"body-content\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cI\u2019m really happy to see movement in all the categories, but we need to work with the sector to increase the rate of change,\u201d says Screen Australia chief executive Graeme Mason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In an ideal world, he adds, it would not be necessary for an actor to be overtly identified as or to specifically play a character who was gay, disabled, or from a particular ethno-cultural group. \u201cThe goal is literally to have people living their lives as they do in the country as a whole,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Such things are increasingly being taken into consideration from the inception of a program, not just in terms of what the characters look like, but also who is creating them, and for whom they are being created.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cI do believe it\u2019s continuing to move, and it has to \u2013 culturally, creatively and commercially,\u201d Mason says. \u201cPeople need to be able to see themselves onscreen, especially as they\u2019re growing up.
