{"id":112657,"date":"2023-04-23T16:45:04","date_gmt":"2023-04-23T16:45:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/?p=112657"},"modified":"2023-04-23T16:45:50","modified_gmt":"2023-04-23T16:45:50","slug":"two-outstanding-thomian-teachers-b-d-jayasinha-dr-n-p-perera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/two-outstanding-thomian-teachers-b-d-jayasinha-dr-n-p-perera\/","title":{"rendered":"Two outstanding Thomian teachers B.D.JAYASINHA &#038; Dr. N P Perera"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Two outstanding Thomian teachers B.D.JAYASINHA &amp; Dr. N P Perera<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-62967\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/S.THOMAS-COLLEGE-OLD-BOYS-ASSOCIATION-Melbourne.jpg\" alt=\"S.THOMAS\u2019 COLLEGE OLD BOYS\u2019 ASSOCIATION (Melbourne)\" width=\"100\" height=\"120\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><u><strong>B.D.JAYASINHA,<\/strong><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">He was a past student of Trinity College, Kandy.\u00a0 where he excelled in\u00a0Mathematics, Cricket and in Hockey.\u00a0 \u00a0His name was engraved\u00a0on most of the Auditorium pillars.\u00a0 He entered the University of Peradeniya.\u00a0 where he graduated from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Mr. Jayasinha\u00a0 joined the Royal Ceylon Airforce for a short while.\u00a0\u00a0Realizing that his vocation was for teaching, he joined Richmond\u00a0College, Galle.\u00a0 \u00a0 Around the year 1958, he joined St Thomas College, Mount Lavinia.\u00a0He taught at the College for 25 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">He was an outstanding Mathematics teacher and a Cricket Coach.\u00a0\u00a0Mr. Jayasinha was instrumental in making\u00a0Chess popular amongst schools, as he was responsible for introducing Chess to St. Thomas College.\u00a0 He was\u00a0the House Master of Wood House.\u00a0 He also had a Ballroom Dancing School, where he was the instructor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">My mind goes back to 1969 when our beloved teacher Mr Jayasinha got his Wood House members to organize a farewell for a departing Warden, as the customary farewell was not organized, mainly to show respect for the office he was holding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Mr Bernard Jayasinha molded many young Thomians to go out to the world to be useful and prominent citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Those Thomians who knew him will always remember him with much affection, gratitude and great respect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Mr. Jayasinha\u00a0 spent his retired life in Canada with his wife and family.\u00a0 Many of his past students from different\u00a0parts of the world\u00a0were in contact with him,\u00a0 till he passed away at\u00a0 the age of 95, a few years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Dr N P Perera<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Dr N P Perera<\/strong>\u00a0was an old Thomian and a popular teacher at S. Thomas&#8217; College, Mt Lavinia who had a rare combination of subjects\u00a0 Geography and Botany. Graduated from the University of Colombo. He was a House Master and Head of the faculty of Geography.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Later became a Professor in local and foreign Universities. School closed half day on the day of his wedding as most teachers and senior students were due to attend the wedding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Left St Thomas\u2019s College in early 60\u2019s and joined University of Sri Jayewardenepura ( Vidyodaya University) From 1964-67 at Leeds University reading for his PhD\u00a0 in Ecology\u00a0 Returned to SJU and later appointed Head of the Department of Geography\u00a0 Resigned from SJU in 1975 to take up new appointment as Professor of Land Use Studies at the University of Zambia\u00a0 In 1982 he was recruited by FAO( Food &amp; Agriculture Organisation of UN) Initially based in Maseru, Lesotho\u00a0 In 1985 transferred to Addis Ababa Ethiopia where he continued his work as a UN expert Left Ethiopia and returned to SL in 1987 Worked as a consultant at ARTI (Agrarian Research Training Institute) Wijerama Mawatha Colombo\u00a0 He was also a visiting lecturer at the Post graduate institute of Archaeology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">He spent his retired life in Imbulgoda, Gampaha and passed away a few years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two outstanding Thomian teachers B.D.JAYASINHA &amp; Dr. N P Perera B.D.JAYASINHA, He was a past student of Trinity College, Kandy.\u00a0 where he excelled in\u00a0Mathematics, Cricket and in Hockey.\u00a0 \u00a0His name was engraved\u00a0on most of the Auditorium pillars.\u00a0 He entered the University of Peradeniya.\u00a0 where he graduated from.
