Special Bulletin<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Good morning,<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a special bulletin to rectify the technical problems in yesterday\u2019s newsletter. We had a huge response to the Brisbane event with James and me, but many people emailed me to say the link did not work.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have responded to everybody who emailed me but I\u2019m concerned that\u00a0 many of you have given up. We all know the frustration caused\u00a0 by links that don\u2019t work. Any problems just email me on\u00a0noel@noelwhittaker.com.au<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve also taken this opportunity to respond to some questions about ING I got yesterday and also to give you\u00a0 some security tips which were left out of yesterday\u2019s newsletter because of space.<\/span><\/p>\n

Event in Brisbane alongside my son James<\/span><\/h1>\n

My choice of career has afforded me opportunities to speak to audiences all over the world about how to better manage their money. However, next month I’ve got something special in store for those in southeast Queensland.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Friday 14 July, I’ll be speaking at\u00a0an\u00a0event in Brisbane<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0alongside my son James. As you may know, James has been living in the US for the last 10 years and has built up an impressive audience,\u00a0now reaching more than two million people each month through\u00a0his podcast and social\u00a0media channels.<\/span><\/p>\n

ING Debit card<\/span><\/h1>\n

I wrote \u201cthis month Geraldine went to visit James in Los Angeles and used her ING card exclusively. She was refunded $210 of hidden commissions by ING.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"ING<\/span><\/p>\n

A few readers pointed out that ING will no longer be doing this after 30 June. I contacted ING who have clarified it. Their release said they will no longer refund fees for \u201coperator ATMs\u201d. This means people who take cash out of overseas ATMs. It\u2019s the same in Australia \u2013 you need to approve the transaction when the ATM tells you the fee the operator will be charging. ING will continue to refund those fees in Australia but I think the limit is five a month.<\/span><\/p>\n

The changes do not affect the commissions refunded on purchases such as food, clothing, etc.. To be frank I haven\u2019t\u00a0 used in overseas ATM for years because I don\u2019t use cash any more when I travel. I rely solely on the debit card.<\/span><\/p>\n

Survival Tips<\/span><\/h1>\n

Some\u00a0 people left their car in the long-term parking at the airport while away, and someone broke into the car.\u00a0Using the information on the car’s registration in the glove compartment, they drove the car to the\u00a0 people’s\u00a0home and robbed it. So I guess if we are going to leave the car in long-term parking, we should NOT leave the registration \/ insurance cards in it, nor your remote garage door opener. This gives us something to think about with all our new electronic technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\n\n\n
A family had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green\u00a0which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on\u00a0the dashboard. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about\u00a0everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They\u00a0then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew\u00a0the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house.. Something to consider if you have a GPS – don’t put your home address in it. Put\u00a0a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one\u00a0else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen.<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nI never thought of this! This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone\u00a0after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her phone, credit card, wallet, etc., was\u00a0stolen. Twenty minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says, “I received your text asking about our Pin number and I’ve replied a little while ago.” When they\u00a0rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually\u00a0used the stolen cell phone to text “hubby” in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes\u00a0they had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nA lady went grocery-shopping at a local mall and left her purse sitting in the children’s seat of the cart while she\u00a0reached something off a shelf.\u00a0 Her wallet was stolen, and she reported it\u00a0to the store personnel. After returning home, she received a phone call from the Mall Security to say that they\u00a0had her wallet and that although there was no money in it, it did still hold her personal papers. She immediately\u00a0went to pick up her wallet, only to be told by Mall Security that they had not called her. By the time she returned\u00a0home again, her house had been broken into and burglarised. The thieves knew that by calling and saying they\u00a0were Mall Security, they could lure her out of her house long enough for them to rob\u00a0it.<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Moral lesson:<\/span><\/h3>\n

Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like\u00a0Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mum, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, when you’re being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to\u00a0confirm\u00a0that the message came from them. If you don’t reach them, be very careful about going places to meet “family\u00a0and friends” who text you.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n
