Pic by M.A. Pushpa Kumara<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">It\u2019s the late 1960s: On most Fridays, Michael Roberts would make his way towards Colombo from Peradeniya,<strong>\u00a0[1]\u00a0<\/strong> recording equipment balanced at his feet and his bag filled with assorted clothes strapped to the back of his trusty scooter. Navigating the sharp curves and turns on his two wheeler, once in Colombo, he would spend his weekend sprinting from one interview to another.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">These interviews were long excursions down memory lane conducted with retired British and Sri Lankan public servants who had served in Sri Lanka (mainly in the Ceylon Civil Service), Sri Lankan politicians and notable figures and were, at times, dense with details thoughtlessly relegated to the margins of history books. Sometimes completing four to five interviews for a weekend, Michael would then return to Peradeniya, laden with other people\u2019s memories and anecdotes of an era gone by.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"h7 bg\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"listitem\" aria-expanded=\"true\">\n<div class=\"Bk\">\n<div class=\"G3 G2 afm\">\n<div id=\":1j6\">\n<div class=\"adn ads\" data-message-id=\"#msg-f:1780378203076088484\" data-legacy-message-id=\"18b52c8af832d2a4\">\n<div class=\"gs\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div id=\":1fb\" class=\"ii gt adO\">\n<div id=\":1oa\" class=\"a3s aiL \">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Extract from Michael Roberts\u2019 interview with Leonard Woolf \u2026\u2026<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">A few decades later Michael reminisces about his oral history project and early beginnings in history and anthropology. He explains that this project was a humble attempt at archiving oral history and rescuing strands of Sri Lanka\u2019s history from the memories of its aged civil servants. The project started off as an idea pitched to the Asia Foundation while studying at Oxford. Because they were living all over England I had to travel even in winter, and most of them I taped with a big spool,\u201d reflects Michael.\u00a0<strong>These conversations provided a glimpse of their personal experiences as well as life in Ceylon and the politics of the Donoughmore Period, nationalism and land policies such as the land development ordinance of 1935.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Educated at the University of Peradeniya (\u201cI sort of drifted into university,\u201d he confesses) and a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford, Michael Roberts \u2013 although he is dismissive of labels \u2013 is a historian and anthropologist. Michael, who resides in Australia and was in Sri Lanka recently, has written and researched extensively on social mobility, identity, agrarian issues, urban history, caste, cultural domination, ethnic conflict and nationalism over the years. A quick search on the internet instantly yields countless articles and essays spanning these topics; but\u00a0<strong>it is his political writing and commentary on the last stages of the Sri Lankan war and aspects of nationalism, which has had brickbats, bouquets and epithets hurled in equal proportion<\/strong>. \u201cIf I analyze things in a certain way and reach certain conclusions, I have to present it \u2013 damn the consequences,\u201d he says in a matter of fact manner, voicing his criticism for well-meaning but misinformed armchair intellectuals who don\u2019t take into account basic empirical facts.<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Michael\u2019s oral history project has now been digitized and the bulk of it can be accessed from the University of Adelaide\u2019s digital library<\/strong>.\u00a0Leonard Woolf\u2019s interview for instance, is accompanied with PDFs of scanned yellowing typewritten transcripts as well as notes from his conversation with Michael in December 1965.\u00a0<strong>Michael\u2019s typewritten notes comment on Woolf\u2019s unflinching candour with little regard for the recorder as well as his severe appraisal and judgement of the men who worked around him.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Upon Michael\u2019s return to Sri Lanka and appointment as a lecturer at the University of Peradeniya, he continued the oral history project shuttling between the hills and the capital, adding local voices and well-known names to its growing archive.<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Born to a West Indian father and Sri Lankan mother, raised in Galle and constantly mistaken for a Burgher,<strong>\u00a0identity politics were inevitably intertwined in Michael\u2019s personal life from his early days.\u00a0<\/strong>Armed with a social scientist\u2019s gaze, he reflects on his childhood and discusses how we go through life always constituting our identities, discarding or adding as we grow. \u201cThese identities come into play at different contexts but some become central,\u201d highlights Michael. A teenager, for instance, might identify him\/herself in accordance with the school they attend (for example, a Thomian, Royalist etc) while this may change into occupational identities (accountant, doctor, mother) or even ethnic ones.<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Unconsciously, our conversation soon turns into the mildest of cerebral tussles. I\u2019m curious about the history of the historian, while like a magnetic compass pointing north,\u00a0<strong>Michael possesses the singular talent of directing the conversation into more political terrain.<\/strong>\u00a0Apart from issues of identity, class and ethnic prejudice, Michael has explored facets of nationalism closely in his writing, along with analyses and results of the final stages of the war in his numerous essays and articles as well as on his blog \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.. (<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/thupahi.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/thupahi.wordpress.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1697987561462000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0EGuPIexotspj6XgsE4YvW\">https:\/\/thuppahi.wordpress.<wbr \/>com\/<\/a>).<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">After a teaching stint at Peradeniya and research fellowships in the US and Germany,\u00a0<strong>Michael moved to Adelaide with his family and taught at the University of Adelaide from 1977\u20132002.\u00a0<\/strong>While moving countries (incidentally, a steel cabinet brimming with books also made the trip across the seas), he also made a shift in subjects, exchanging history for anthropology. \u201cMoving sideways from history into anthropology meant developing my sociological and political science skills \u2013 so it was a kind of re-education as well. Because when you have to teach, you learn. You\u2019re always learning when you teach, isn\u2019t it? In fact, the best learning path is to actually be a teacher,\u201d muses Michael. Michael pauses and gives a characteristically pragmatic answer. \u201cI think it\u2019s a hobby, a passion [\u2026] People say you learn from history but I don\u2019t know about that. I\u2019m sceptical\u2026\u00a0 seeing power play and politicians and worldwide forces\u2026\u201d\u00a0<strong>[4]<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"adn ads\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-message-id=\"#msg-f:1780378203076088484\" data-legacy-message-id=\"18b52c8af832d2a4\">\n<div class=\"gs\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>FOOTNOTES as ADDENDA<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>[1]\u00a0<\/strong>Let me stress, here,\u00a0 that\u00a0<strong>I had the advantage of two homes-from-home in Colombo with my married sisters:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>that of CH Fernando &amp; my sister Estelle in Hampden Lane, Wellawatte; and that of Sydney Sirimanne and my sister Dolores (aka Dodo) in Kirulapona.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>[2]\u00a0<\/strong>Oral history endeavours of this sort were relatively new at this point of time. There was an outfit in USA which had commenced such work. I stumbled into this endeavour because I interviewed my father \u2014 then retired and living with my sister Pamela in Streatham in London; thereafter I conceived the project of tapping retired British civil servants for their experiences. My head of department in Ceylon, Prof Karl W. Goonewardena, readily backed the idea and the Asia Foundation in the island chipped in with monies for the portable tape-recorder and (and travel?).<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>[3]\u00a0<\/strong>Truly an interesting sidelight, ADILAH \u2026\u2026. It reminds me that our chat occurred in my sister Estelle\u2019s house in Hampden Lane in 2015 \u2014 within its endearing environment of vegetation amidst buildings \u2014 a setting that brought a stream of birds to its surrounds\u00a0 and even, on one occasion, a giant monitor lizard (<em>kabaragoya<\/em>) from the Wellawatte Canal circa 500 yards away.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>[4]\u00a0<\/strong>The ROHP recordings, typed material and an assortment of historical material were transported to Sri Lanka in the 2010as with material aid from Jitto Arulampalam and a number of hands in Australia and the support of Dr Nishand De Mel and his willing aides in VERITE RESEARCH in Colombo. The cataloguing at that end was done by Premila Gamage of Verite Research \u2013with S. Thomas College (via Warden Billimoria) and The Ecumenical Institute at Pamankade provding temporary abodes for the stock \u2026.. which now resides in a domain that renders t<strong>hem open to public
