I absolutely love Australia and think it is the best country in the world by a mile.\u00a0I think we should have an Australia Day, but I think we can probably find a more appropriate date to celebrate<\/strong>. Earlier,\u00a0the head of Cricket Australia was left stumped for words when quizzed about the organisation\u2019s refusal to acknowledge Australia Day<\/a>\u00a0at the Brisbane Test. Chief executive\u00a0Nick Hockley awkwardly hummed and hawed on radio when questioned about the contradiction in his commen<\/strong>ts that he wants \u201ceveryone to come along to celebrate Australia Day;\u201d but [then noted that] the phrase \u201cAustralia Day\u201d won\u2019t be uttered at the ground to \u201cbe respectful to everyone\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cummins, who will captain Australia for the first time in a match that falls on January 26, said: \u201cI absolutely love Australia \u2026 but I think we can probably find a more appropriate date to celebrate it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins believes Australia Day shouldn\u2019t be celebrated on January 26.\u00a0 Cricket Australia does not refer to January 26 as Australia Day, which this year falls on Friday on the second day of the Test against the West Indies at the Gabba.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

When asked about the date in Brisbane on Tuesday, Cummins said: \u201cThis conversation comes up every year really, and Cricket Australia has been pretty consistent over the last four or five years in the way they approach it.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cMy personal opinion is I absolutely love Australia. It\u2019s the best country in the world by a mile and I think we should have an Australia Day, but I think we can probably find a more appropriate date to celebrate it.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

Cummins has been outspoken on environmental and social issues in the past as national captain, but has not so bluntly articulated his viewpoint on the Australia Day debate.<\/span><\/p>\n

The captain said conversations he had had with Indigenous cricketers Ash Gardner and Scott Boland had influenced his thoughts on the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cKnowing a couple of those players [Gardner and Boland], you hear the stories and their feelings. Something that does gather extra importance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it is hard because January 26 does mean something different to different people. I think we\u2019re all in unison that we absolutely love Australia and feel really lucky and privileged to be here in this country. But it is a delicate one. It\u2019s going to be a tough day for some.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Cummins\u2019 comments came after chief executive Nick Hockley stumbled and froze on Sydney radio on Tuesday when asked to explain Cricket Australia\u2019s position.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAre you there, Nick?\u201d 2GB host Ben Fordham asked when the line went silent. \u201cI think I\u2019ve explained our position,\u201d Hockley eventually said, wrongly stating that Australia Day would not be mentioned by the ground announcer during the second day of the Test.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hockley later issued a clarification. \u201cWhile we do not refer to Australia Day in our marketing and promotional material, and haven\u2019t done for more than four years, in regard to welcoming people with the ground announcement prior to play on Friday, I\u2019d like to clarify that this will include reference to Australia Day,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAs we have said for several years when we play cricket on January 26, while many people celebrate Australia Day, for others, especially many Indigenous Australians, it is a very difficult day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The issue of playing matches on Australia Day has been an ongoing issue for Cricket Australia since 2023 when women\u2019s Indigenous player Gardner criticised the scheduling of a women\u2019s T20 match against Pakistan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Australian women\u2019s captain Meg Lanning backed Gardner\u2019s stance at the time.\u00a0Gardner and fast bowler Boland<\/a>\u00a0have both\u00a0criticised the decision to play international matches on January 26<\/a>, describing it as a national day of mourning.<\/span><\/p>\n

Australian opener Usman Khawaja, who has been outspoken about the humanitarian impact of the conflict in the Middle East, also supports a change to the date of the holiday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think in particular a sport like cricket, which has such diversity and has millions of people following it and supporting it and playing it, you get a good spectrum of just the community and a good feel for what the community expects,\u201d Cummins said while promoting a solar panel project with Cricket Australia in his role as\u00a0leader of Cricket for Climate<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut hearing that it\u2019s going to be close to a sellout at the Gabba, it\u2019s going to be really well supported, I think we\u2019re all going to celebrate [that].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Cummins was part of an announcement that Cricket Australia and Cricket for Climate have collaborated to install solar power at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane. The project will save $50,000 in energy costs in the first year and follows several Australian players supporting the installation of solar power systems at their local cricket clubs.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Asked how he felt about a noisy fringe calling him a \u201cwoke warrior\u201d or \u201ccaptain planet\u201d who should concentrate on cricket, Cummins said \u201cchange is a little bit uncomfortable at times\u201d.<\/span><\/div>\n

This is putting money back into community cricket clubs, it\u2019s helping grassroots programs, junior male and female programs, some of these programs that are really tough to find funding for, and we\u2019re unlocking a few extra thousand dollars for a lot of these community clubs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Australian team trained on Tuesday ahead of the Brisbane Test, starting Thursday. Travis Head was absent from that session after testing positive for COVID-19.
