The intention is to do it in style with an accompanying perahera and an open invitation to the entire school community involving students, parents, and teachers. The required funds are being collected from the school students. The event is promoted as a collaborative religious program. Perhaps recent discussions in public forums that the school needs to be secular has some bearing on this repackaged message.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">This letter does not aim to discuss the pros and cons of this event. The focus is to come up with a pragmatic approach to address the scenario at the school, based on the Buddha\u2019s universal teaching.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>What is essential?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">As a leading educational institution in the country, it is essential that Royal College, Colombo instils the importance of human values in the young minds of its students, irrespective their ethnicity and religious leaning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">It is also essential that all practices adopted by the school are conducted ethically (based on Seela). This goes beyond simply circumventing ministry circulars. This includes proper accountability and transparency of processes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>What is unessential?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In this context the following is unessential:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">What the definition of secularism should be.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Whether the school is secular and whether it should remain secular in the future.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Reader to decide?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cPerforming rites and rituals (S\u012blabbata-par\u0101m\u0101sa) is established as a Buddhist practice in Sri Lanka today. This is an outcome of an un-Buddhist concept being adopted over many generations without necessary inquiry or censure. Blindly bowing down to any tradition that comes down the generations is a fundamental weakness of an untrained mind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u2013 Ven. Walpola Rahula\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">(in Sathyodaya)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">May the readers decide for themselves whether the following is essential or unessential:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Having extravagant religious ceremonies in schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Having peraheras in the school premises.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cFood should be given to the hungry. Clothes should be given to those who do not have sufficient clothes. Shelter should be provided to the homeless. The sick should be cared for with love and compassion. These are the offerings we can make to the Buddha.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u2013 Ven. Walpola Rahula\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">(in Sathyodaya)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">If the school wishes to promote a genuinely collaborative religious program, how about gathering all religious societies together and feeding the hungry or providing clothes to the poor. The Buddhist Brotherhood of the school can lead the way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">This would be a wholesome gesture (Kusala Kamma) when one third of the country\u2019s population is said to be going to bed skipping a meal. This would be a great way to instil human values in the young minds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In conclusion let me share the following thought, with\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">metta to all:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>The ultimate religion?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cOh! Mighty God, the knower of all,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">I implore thee to make one call,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Of the Religions, us humans enthral<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">What is the noblest of them all?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u201cThe noblest one I cannot guess<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">What \u2018Religion\u2019 is I know even less<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">But my son, all noble sages stress<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The value of humanity and kindness\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cTemples and churches, build them if you may,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Erect grand statues, place flowers and pray,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">But as human values slowly ebb away\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Son, say which Religion could save the day?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cYour harmony with\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">inclusiveness,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">These worthy qualities, I always bless,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Yes, my son, all noble sages stress<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The value of humanity and\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">kindness\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">(The writer was a student at Royal from 1960 to 1973, and currently resides in Australia.
