Six people, including four children, were found dead late Wednesday at a home on Berrigan Drive in Barrhaven, Ottawa police confirmed Thursday. Police have charged a 19-year-old with six counts of murder after five members of the same family were massacred in \u2018the largest murder in recent memory\u2019 in the Barrhaven suburb of Ottawa, Canada\u2019s capital.<\/span><\/p>\n

Police have identified one of the adult victims as 35-year-old Darshani Dilanthika Ekanyake. Her husband The father and husband, who has been identified as Dhanushka Wickramasinghe, was found injured at the scene. He remained in hospital in serious, but stable condition as of mid-afternoon Thursday. Wickramasinghe was found at the scene, and was injured. He was rushed to hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Febrio De Zoysa, 19, was arrested and charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder, Ottawa Police said in a statement Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n

The suspect Febrio De Zoysa is a Sri Lankan national who is believed to be in Canada as an international student.<\/span><\/p>\n

Police say they responded to 911 calls just before 11 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mother and 4 children among 6 people dead in Barrhaven mass killing, Ottawa police say.<\/span><\/p>\n

One person has been taken to hospital police said Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n

A mother, her four children, and a family acquaintance have been killed in a \u201cmass killing\u201d at a home in the Ottawa suburb of Barrhaven, Ottawa police say. Six people were found dead inside a two-storey townhouse on Berrigan Drive in Barrhaven, late Wednesday night. A suspect was arrested at the scene.<\/span><\/p>\n

Barrhaven is a suburb of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is located about 17 km (11 mi) southwest of the city\u2019s downtown core.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt about 10:52 Wednesday evening, the Ottawa Police Service received two 911 calls from the Berrigan Drive area reporting a suspicious incident where a male was yelling and asking people to call 911,\u201d Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs told reporters Wednesday afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOfficers entered the home to check on the safety of those inside, and that is where they began to discover the six victims, the youngest of which is less than three months old. The family are newcomers to Canada and are originally from Sri Lanka.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no ongoing threat to public safety,\u201d police say.<\/span><\/p>\n

The victims have not been identified but Sri Lanka\u2019s high commission in Ottawa says they were a family of Sri Lankan nationals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Lanka\u2019s high commission in Ottawa confirmed that the people who died were not Canadian citizens. The high commission said the father survived but his wife and children died, adding it is in touch with their family members in the country\u2019s capital of Colombo.<\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview, Ottawa Police Services chief Eric Stubbs said investigators are working to determine the relationship between the suspect and victims, as well as any relationship between the six victims.<\/span><\/p>\n

He confirmed a family was living in the home.<\/span><\/p>\n

He did not confirm the manner of death, but did say it was a mass killing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith six people deceased, that\u2019s significant,\u201d he said. \u201cThe community is going to be greatly impacted, the City of Ottawa, let alone the specific neighbourhood. We\u2019re thinking of them, and sending all empathy to those involved. Family, friends and neighbours.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Police cruisers were parked outside the brick home, one of four rowhouses on Berrigan Drive. A forensics van was parked in the driveway.<\/span><\/p>\n

A cluster of party balloons could seen on the back patio of the home.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stubbs told a radio program earlier in the day Thursday that investigators don\u2019t believe the homicide is an incident of intimate partner violence.<\/span><\/p>\n

The victims have been identified as 35-year-old Darshani Dilanthika Ekanyake and her four children: 7-year-old Inuka Wickramasinghe, 4-year-old Ashwini Wickramasinghe, 2-year-old Rinyana Wickramasinghe and two-month-old Kelly Wickramasinghe. A sixth man, 40-year-old Amarakoon Mubiayanselage Gamini Amarakoon, was also found deceased at the home.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stubbs says Amarakoon was an acquaintance of the family and has been living at the home.<\/span><\/p>\n

The woman\u2019s husband remains in hospital with serious injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe investigation has found that an edged weapon was used to cause the deaths and injuries,\u201d Stubbs said. \u201cTo be clear, this was a mass killing, not a mass shooting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Febrio De Zoysa, 19, is facing six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Police say De Zoysa is a Sri Lankan national who is believed to be in Canada as a student.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe know there are a lot of questions about why this tragedy occurred, this is the focus of our Homicide Unit as they diligently investigate this tragic crime,\u201d Stubbs said. \u201cOur investigators and forensic teams are working very hard to determine all of the facts and ensure justice is done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Several Ottawa police cruisers were parked outside a townhouse on Berrigan Drive Thursday morning. Yellow police tape could be seen blocking access to the back of the homes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a big tragedy that\u2019s happened on our street, especially with kids involved,\u201d resident Shanti Ramesh told CTV News.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ramesh says she didn\u2019t hear anything last night, but saw police officers and paramedics at the scene.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne guy was sitting on the left side of the driveway; he was yelling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At 9 a.m., investigators began removing something from the home and placing it in a van parked in the driveway. Officers blocked the view of the front door with a white sheet.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is unbelievable for the whole neighbourhood,\u201d resident Ahmed Saed told The Canadian Press.<\/span><\/p>\n

CTV News has learned that the Sri Lankan High Commission have been told by Ottawa police that the 6 victims of the Barrhaven incident are of Sri Lankan decent. The High Commission would not confirm if all the victims were of one family. The High Commission was not given any information about the suspect but are assisting the police notifying the next of kin in Sri Lanka.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe posted a statement on social media, calling the deaths of six people, \u201cone of the most shocking incidents of violence in our city\u2019s history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was devastated to learn of the multiple homicide in Barrhaven,\u201d Sutcliffe said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are proud to live in a safe community but this news is distressing to all Ottawa residents. Ginny and I are thinking of the family members and neighbours of the victims. Thank you to our emergency responders who are investigating and supporting those who are affected by this terrible event.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview on CTV Morning Live, Mayor Sutcliffe said he was \u201cshocked and devastated\u201d to hear the news six people were killed in the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s incredibly troubling and my thoughts go out to the family members and the neighbours in Barrhaven who must be shaken up by these events,\u201d Sutcliffe said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe police are providing support to the neighbours and to the family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Barrhaven East Coun. Wilson Lo said, \u201cI\u2019m saddened to learn of the tragic loss of six Barrhaven neighbours last night.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy heart and mind are with their loved ones and neighbours close by. OPS have a person in custody and will complete a thorough investigation. I\u2019m confident they will continue to keep us safe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Premier Doug Ford calls the news of the mass killings in Ottawa \u201cheartbreaking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy thoughts are with the family and friends of the six victims and the entire Ottawa community who is reeling from this terrible tragedy,\u201d Ford said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nepean MPP Lisa Macleod said on social media, \u201cMy community has woken up to shock, grief and tragedy today as 6 people, including four children, have been murdered.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are no words for the heartbreak me and my neighbours feel for the surviving family, friends & playmates of the deceased.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the homicide while speaking to reporters.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, our first reactions are all ones of shock and horror at this terrible violence,\u201d Trudeau said. \u201cWe\u2019re expecting that the community reaches out to support family and friends as Canadians always do, and we expect that the police of jurisdiction to be doing the work and keeping us all informed of this terrible tragedy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Conservative Party leader and Carleton MP Pierre Poilievre says he\u2019s \u201cheartbroken\u201d to hear about the six deaths in Ottawa.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy thoughts are with the loved ones of the victims and the entire community grieving this tragic loss.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The homicide scene on Berrigan Drive is located off of Longfields Drive and near Berrigan Elementary School and Longfields-Davidson Heights Secondary School. Monsignor Paul Baxter School is also located nearby.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a tragic and complex investigation, and investigative teams remain on Berrigan Drive,\u201d police said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Barrhaven is a suburb in Ottawa, located approximately 25 minutes south of downtown Ottawa.<\/span><\/p>\n

The names of the victims have not been released.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ottawa Catholic School Board issued a statement saying, \u201cWe want to express our deep sorrow for the tragic events that occurred in the Barrhaven community. Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
