\"N.S.Venkataraman\"Humanoid robots \u00a0\u00a0are now being rapidly developed by several research institutions around the world. It is reported that there are more than 22 humanoid\u00a0 robots in the world right now, some of which\u00a0 are in the \u00a0prototype development stage . Researchers in several countries including USA, Japan, China , Israel, Iran , Singapore \u00a0are actively involved in research and development\u00a0 work, causing high expectation . Several funding agencies are too joining the fray by extending financial support to the humanoid robots \u00a0projects , thus reserving their place to exploit\u00a0 the business\u00a0 potentials in the coming decades.<\/span><\/p>\n

Certainly, humanoid robots will, \u00a0sooner or later \u00a0and perhaps sooner than later , make\u00a0 \u00a0big impact on the life style of human beings, work culture, value systems and\u00a0\u00a0 productivity in various spheres of life. \u00a0\u00a0It is widely believed that\u00a0 \u00a0in the coming years, \u00a0humanoid robots\u00a0\u00a0 will find use\u00a0 in several sectors such as hospitality, educational institutions by creating content and teaching programmes , health care by vital signs measurements \u00a0\u00a0, industrial operations , day today routine activities of individuals \u00a0and perhaps even in\u00a0 crowd control\u00a0 and wars.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prototypes and development<\/u>\u00a0:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Human robots are\u00a0\u00a0 developed with an array of sensors , cameras\u00a0 , micro chips , image processing\u00a0\u00a0 and \u00a0natural language processing\u00a0 techniques \u00a0and so on, \u00a0aided \u00a0by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are human robots under development that will have the ability to carry \u00a0\u00a0several kilogramme of weight, perhaps\u00a0 even more than 25 kilogramme ,\u00a0\u00a0 to function in factories \u00a0and warehouses for transferring materials\u00a0\u00a0 and \u00a0in retail and construction activities too. With such capability, \u00a0humanoid robots can unload trailers and move packages. The possibilities are that it may even be able to\u00a0 crouch and squat to pick up objects and adjust the alignments of machineries to balance them , depending on size and weight and the industrial needs .<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It can be expected that the robots can act as bar tender serving beer, coffee, wine and snacks in restaurants and even in house holds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some researchers are even targeting to make\u00a0 humanoid robots with facial recognition and chat function capability.<\/span><\/p>\n

One wild imagination at this stage is that humanoid robots can even replace humans in kitchen that would provide great relief to the traditional women, pre occupied\u00a0 with the cookery activities !<\/span><\/p>\n

Are humanoid robots beyond imagination ?<\/u><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The development\u00a0 efforts towards\u00a0 humanoid robots are now\u00a0 being targeted to make them resemble and act like humans. The\u00a0\u00a0 development efforts for humanoid robots\u00a0 are said\u00a0 to be targeted\u00a0 to imitate\u00a0 even\u00a0 human emotions,\u00a0 if the scientists would have their way.<\/span><\/p>\n

As of now,\u00a0 the future scenario with the \u00a0\u00a0likely massive introduction of humanoid robots \u00a0\u00a0in the coming years\u00a0 to carry out various activities may defy imagination. But , the disruptions\u00a0\u00a0 are likely to be so fast,\u00a0\u00a0 that it would not be long before such imagination stage reach\u00a0 a stage of \u00a0real happenings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Those who now think that humanoid robot is beyond imagination should think about the old times\u00a0\u00a0 and read how once horses were used as transport medium for men and materials, \u00a0until such time , when automobiles were introduced. Then, horses as facilitator of transport faded too quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Around one hundred years back, who could have imagined that a football match played at London would be immediately seen on a screen\u00a0 by a person sitting in a remote village in a distant India.<\/span><\/p>\n

The benefits\u00a0\u00a0 and positives :<\/u><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The benefits of\u00a0 humanoid robots are too obvious to describe in detail. It would lead to greater efficiency, accuracy in all activities and avoid human errors to the maximum level. Perhaps, the accidents in industries, transport , mining and other sector would drastically come down , saving human lives.\u00a0 With significant improvement in productivity and usage efficiency of materials , the humanoid robot would inevitably promote industrial and economic growth\u00a0 and contribute to overall material prosperity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The negatives and issues :<\/u><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

As \u00a0humanoid robots would carry out several functions in future that have been hitherto physically carried out by humans and\u00a0\u00a0 also to some extent\u00a0 mental functions of humans, one thing that is very clear at this stage is that humanoid robots would cause increased\u00a0 level of unemployment in the society, that could cause social unrest.<\/span><\/p>\n

The well known traditional saying is that an idle brain is the devil\u2019s workshop.\u00a0 Will humanoid robots cause devil\u2019s workshop?<\/span><\/p>\n

The world population is steadily increasing from 1650 million in 1900 to around 7970 million in 2022.( Source United Nations Population Division) Over the years, the global population has been increasing at around 1.6% per annum.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This growth in global population has to be drastically checked, if the possible intensity of unemployment scenario due to massive use of humanoid robots , \u00a0were to be lessened or eliminated.\u00a0 Is it possible ?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India has now emerged as the most populated country in the world with more than 1.4 billion people and with high population density. If Indian population were to continue to increase ,\u00a0 it is likely to reach\u00a0 the alarming figure of 2 billion people by the year 2050.<\/span><\/p>\n

What would be the impact on social life in India if humanoid robots would be extensively used in India in future.\u00a0 Since the development and fine tuning of humanoid robots in multiple application sector would be fast and unstoppable, no country in the world including India can remain without using humanoid robots , as they need to\u00a0 remain\u00a0 in tune with the changing trends around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

The negative \u00a0impact on employment level in under populated and advanced countries may not be significant.\u00a0 However, developing countries particularly densely populated ones such as India and countries in African continent\u00a0 \u00a0have to see the writing on the wall and have to take some precautionary steps and think ahead of time<\/span><\/p>\n

While densely populated countries may face social issues due to inability to provide jobs\u00a0 to people as humanoid robots increasingly would take over the various functions, the developed countries\u00a0 may find a scenario where the influx of\u00a0 migrant population from densely populated countries\u00a0 become a grave issue\u00a0 with severe\u00a0\u00a0 adverse consequences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0What would be the future like ?<\/u><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Of course, there\u00a0\u00a0 is apprehension in some quarters about the possibilities of humanoid robots\u00a0 negatively\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 influencing the world events.<\/span><\/p>\n

The question is whether the impact \u00a0of the humanoid robot would cause more negatives than positives.\u00a0 This could be a matter of conjecture\u00a0 at this stage , as\u00a0 it is not clear as to whether the world would be prepared to face \u201cthe \u201conslaught\u201d of humanoid robots,\u00a0 that threaten\u00a0 to change the life style of humans upside down.\u00a0 This would be a\u00a0 million dollar question.<\/span><\/p>\n

However,\u00a0\u00a0 based on the past experience due to disruption by\u00a0 technologies from time to time, the overall\u00a0 emerging \u00a0view appear to be that humans would adopt\u00a0 themselves to the developing situation and make the best use of it.<\/span><\/p>\n

In any case, whether positive or negative impact, the march of science and technology\u00a0 will continue and human ingenuity will play the role in influencing the scientific and technological developments.<\/span><\/p>\n
