But<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">what\u2019s happening beneath the surface? And, more importantly, how can we tackle them? Let\u2019s get started!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Now, What Is a Pot Belly?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cBefore we get into the nitty-gritty, let\u2019s define what we mean by a pot belly.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cA pot belly, also known as abdominal obesity or visceral fat, refers to excess fat stored around your midsection. It does not refer to subcutaneous fat (the fat just under your skin); <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">visceral fat wraps around your internal <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">organs, posing severe health risks. These <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">risks include increased risk of heart <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u2022 pressure and certain types of cancer.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u2022 Such fat around the internal organs serves a good purpose by keeping them warm and protecting them from shocks due to trauma. It is the excessive fat that we are concerned about.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In Sri Lanka, many people are thin in structure, but they still get potbellies. Even if you&#8217;re thin, you can still have too much visceral fat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">How much you have is partly about your genes and lifestyle, especially your active lifestyle. Visceral fat likes inactivity. This means we have some control over visceral fat accumulation, and our lifestyle choices can make a significant difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Such fat surrounds important organs, including your stomach, liver and intestines. It differs from subcutaneous fat, which is just below your skin. To put it simply, visceral fat is the fat that wraps around your organs, while subcutaneous fat is the fat that you can pinch on your skin. Visceral fat is more dangerous to your health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">There is also an organ called the omentum, which hangs from the periphery of the stomach and is called the policeman of the abdomen. This beneficial omental fat wraps around foreign bodies and prevents the spread of inflammation, playing a crucial role in your body&#8217;s defence system. In non-obese people, the omentum is a thin membrane studded with fat globules. In pot-bellied people, it gets <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">studded with so much fat that it could appear like a football within the abdominal cavity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>&#8220;Potbellies can be harmful and increase health risks.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u2022\u201cThey aren\u2019t just a cosmetic concern. They\u2019re associated with a higher risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even certain cancers, as mentioned earlier in this talk.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>They Can cause Inflammation and Metabolic Dysfunctions:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cVisceral fat is metabolically active. It releases inflammatory chemicals called cytokines that \u00a0can wreak havoc on your body.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">It causes insulin resistance, resulting in diabetes and cardiovascular disease.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The inflammatory cytokines released from adipose tissue may increase the risk of oesophagal inflammation, Barrett&#8217;s esophagus, and oesophagal adenocarcinoma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Visceral fat tissue is known to secrete a variety of inflammatory cytokines. Some of the key inflammatory cytokines released from visceral fat include interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-\u03b1), and C-reactive protein (CRP).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Studies have shown that the levels of these inflammatory cytokines increase with the amount of visceral fat. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">So, remember you are walking with a time bomb, and the earlier action you take, the better for your well-being and your dependant family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Excessive belly swell can cause breathing difficulties due to pressure on the diaphragm, leading to panting when walking or exerting yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cNow, let\u2019s explore why pot bellies happen in the first place:\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">1. Poor Diet:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">2. Excessive consumption of refined sugars, processed foods, and unhealthy fats.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">3. In Sri Lanka, people love to eat white bread and processed white rice, and that alone is sufficient to increase visceral fat.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">4. Lack of Physical Activity: Sedentary lifestyles contribute to fat accumulation.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">5. Stress: Chronic stress triggers cortisol release, promoting abdominal fat storage.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">6. Genetics: Some people are genetically predisposed to store fat in the abdominal area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>How can you Combat Pot Bellies?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">1. Healthy Eating:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u2022Host \u201cFocus on whole foods: fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Cut back on sugary drinks and processed snacks.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">2.
