Professor Sumanapala Galmangoda,born in the village of Hanwella in the Gampaha district, was the son of a indegenious\u00a0 doctor and a devout Buddhist mother. He received his primary education in Oriental languages and Buddhist studies under the guidance of scholars at Balagalla Saraswati Maha Pirivena, close to his home. From a young age, he was recognized as an exceptional scholar, notable for his deep understanding, prudence, and extensive knowledge of languages, historical periods, and philosophies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0Academic Achievements and Professional Contributions.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In 1973, he achieved a first-class pass in Pali language studies, becoming only the second individual in the history of the University of Kelaniya to do so. His academic prowess earned him international recognition, particularly in Buddhist studies and Oriental languages.<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Galmangoda held several prestigious positions throughout his career. He served as the Head of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies, the Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies at the University of Kelaniya, and the Director of the Gampaha Wickramarachchi Institute of Ayurveda Studies. His exemplary academic and administrative abilities shone in every role, progressing from Lecturer to Senior Professor at the University of Kelaniya.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the Director of Bollegala , Nagananda International Buddhist University, he provided exemplary service to the nation and Buddhist studies. His visionary leadership and pioneering efforts in local academic studies were widely acknowledged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Galmangoda’s reputation as a teacher and preacher spread globally. Thousands of future scholars in Pali and Buddhist studies benefited from his academic knowledge, scholarship, and unparalleled teaching skills. Despite his extensive commitments, he dedicated countless nights to theological research and publication. He authored over thirty books in Sinhala, English, Pali, and Sanskrit, alongside hundreds of academic documents and research papers. These works continue to serve as essential resources for both novice and expert scholars, particularly in the study of Abhidharma.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was a sought-after guest professor at esteemed academic institutions worldwide, gaining immense popularity as a teacher in Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, Myanmar, and Thailand. His academic contributions extended to South and East Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Scandinavian countries, where he participated in conferences and Buddhist peace work. Notably, his commentary on Buddhist teachings on mental health was recognized by the United Nations General Assembly, bringing international honor to Sri Lanka.<\/span><\/p>\n

Media and Community Contributions<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Galmangoda made significant contributions to spreading Buddhist knowledge through mass media, particularly television in Sri Lanka. Collaborations with scholars like Dr. Hasanta Hettiarachchi of Independent Television and the Doramadalawa Scholars Mandap enriched public understanding of Dhamma<\/span><\/p>\n
