&#8211; <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">By Des Kelly<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ABDUL-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13777\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13777\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ABDUL-1.jpg\" alt=\"ABDUL-1\" width=\"532\" height=\"795\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qk_Vu6AcbWg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Royal loyal &#8230; Abdul and Queen Victoria in the 1880s<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">By EMILY FAIRBAIRN<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Published: 23rd April 2012<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">But just over a century ago the same celebration for her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, was nearly derailed by her scandalous relationship with an Indian manservant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In fact Her Majesty became so infatuated with tall, handsome Muslim Abdul Karim that senior royal advisers plotted to have her declared insane just days before her Jubilee unless she halted a controversial plan to knight him. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The young waiter \u2014 he was just 24 \u2014 had begun serving the Queen\u2019s table in June 1887 after being sent to London as a \u201cgift\u201d from the Indian outpost of her empire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">He soon began bewitching her with romantic tales of mysterious India, and cooking up delicious curries for her in the royal kitchens. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">But royal biographer Jane Ridley believes Abdul\u2019s striking looks also helped to draw in the Queen. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">She says: \u201cVictoria always had a great appreciation of male beauty so when she saw these gorgeous clothes, sashes and turbans kissing her feet, how could she resist?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Victoria soon promoted Abdul from waiter to her personal teacher \u2014 or \u201cMunshi\u201d \u2014 and after he began to teach her a few words in Hindi the pair grew ever closer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">She had been starved of affection since the death of her beloved husband Albert in 1861, and Abdul Karim\u2019s great-grandson, Javed Mahmood, says it is not hard to see why she fell for his great-grandad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ABDUL-2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13778\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13778\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ABDUL-2.jpg\" alt=\"ABDUL-2\" width=\"532\" height=\"760\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Together &#8230; Queen Victoria and her manservant, Abdul<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">He says: \u201cAbdul was a very warm man. He was very jolly, entertaining \u2014 a very human person. \u201cMaybe those were the traits that attracted the Queen eventually, because he came across as a man of flesh and blood, and she wasn\u2019t used to real people around her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">But as is revealed in a new Channel 4 documentary \u2014 Queen Victoria\u2019s Last Love \u2014 their growing intimacy did not go down well in the strictly hierarchical world of the royal household.(to be telecasted on &#8211; probably, on coming Wednesday!?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">By 1894, Abdul was elevated to the position of Her Majesty\u2019s Indian Secretary \u2014 making him an official member of the inner circle. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Jane Ridley says: \u201cThe idea that a servant, an outsider who has none of this pedigree or background, could suddenly leapfrog into a position of great closeness with the Queen is something courtiers found not just threatening but wrong.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">It wasn\u2019t just Abdul\u2019s class that troubled the Queen\u2019s advisers. They were also scandalised by his race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">But the more the royal household attacked Abdul, the more the Queen defended him. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">She fired off an angry memo to her Private Secretary, Sir Henry Ponsonby, saying: \u201cAs for Abdul Karim, the Queen cannot praise him highly enough. He\u2019s zealous and attentive, a thorough gentleman.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The royal household hit back by sending investigators to India who came back with alarming information about Abdul\u2019s origins. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">He was not, as he had claimed, the son of a high-flying Army doctor. In fact, his father was a lowly pharmacist who worked in Agra jail <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u2014 where Abdul himself had worked as a mere clerk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">But the revelation only served to push the Queen closer to Abdul.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">She took a stance that was astonishing at the time \u2014 accusing her household of racial prejudice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In a memo to Sir Henry she wrote: \u201cTo make out the Munshi is low is outrageous. Abdul feels cut to the heart to be thus spoken of. The Queen is so sorry for the poor Munshi\u2019s sensitive feelings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Rumours started to circulate that Abdul was passing Victoria inflammatory advice about India, and that he was a spy leaking secret foreign policy information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ABDUL-3.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13779\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13779\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ABDUL-3.jpg\" alt=\"ABDUL-3\" width=\"532\" height=\"598\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Bow about that &#8230; gentleman greets Queen Victoria as she stands with Abdul<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">She responded by becoming even more intimate with him. When he became ill she would spend long periods in his bedchamber, fluffing his pillows and stroking his hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Then in 1897, with just weeks to go until Victoria\u2019s Diamond Jubilee, the Queen announced she planned to knight Abdul.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The bombshell was one step too far for her ministers and attendants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The Viceroy of India joined forces with the Prime Minister to oppose the move. In response, Victoria threatened to pull out of the Jubilee celebrations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">With the biggest event that the British monarchy had ever seen under threat, the Queen\u2019s eldest son, Bertie \u2014 later Edward VII \u2014 stepped in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">He hatched a plan with the Queen\u2019s doctor, Sir James Reid, who wrote to her, saying: \u201cThere are people in high places who know your majesty well and say to me the only charitable explanation that can be given is that your majesty is not sane, and that at some time it will be necessary for me to come forward and say so. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cI have seen the Prince of Wales yesterday and he has said he is quite ready to come forward, because it affects the throne.\u201d <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Victoria had to admit defeat and Abdul did not get his knighthood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">But he was constantly by her side for the Jubilee celebrations.
