The late Rev. John Blaze and Hugh Aldons<\/span><\/h2>\n

Below\u00a0 is\u00a0 an\u00a0 excerpt\u00a0 of\u00a0 an\u00a0 email\u00a0 I\u00a0 recd.\u00a0 re. \u00a0the\u00a0 late\u00a0 Hugh\u00a0 Aldons \u00a0\u00a0and\u00a0 his\u00a0 tragic\u00a0 demise .\u00a0 He\u00a0 passed\u00a0 away\u00a0 3.30\u00a0 pm.\u00a0 last\u00a0 Thursday ( day\u00a0 before yesterday ) .\u00a0 His \u00a0former\u00a0 wife\u00a0 Ione\u00a0 is\u00a0 also\u00a0 in\u00a0 a\u00a0 serious\u00a0 condition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tragic\u00a0 occurrences\u00a0 seem \u00a0to\u00a0 be\u00a0 the\u00a0 order\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 day\u00a0!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u00a0 last Tuesday, he appears to have tripped over after exiting his separate shower cubicle and fallen into the bath in his unit (where he lived independently alone) albeit at age 99 years! He was found, with no apparent external injuries, \u00a0by his daughter Sonia when she arrived for a visit to check on him. She called an ambulance and he was eventually taken to the Valley Hospital, Dandenong North, where he appeared lucid and could communicate. But later, they noticed he began slurring his speech so he underwent a head scan which revealed a slight brain bleed. He had obviously struck his head in the fall, and was hence transferred to South Eastern Hospital for observation, treatment and palliative care, but sadly did not survive much longer. Yesterday we heard from Sonia that , poor Aunt Ione (now 91) was yesterday found bleeding heavily by her granddaughter, Kate, (one of Michael\u2019s daughters) who lived with Ione. Kate called an ambulance and she was taken to Cabrini for examination and treatment. In the absence of further news about her, we assume she is still there. So, it has been a very distressing and sad time for that whole family, especially for Sonia, their only surviving sibling and principal carer, who lives in Williamstown, so has always had a long way to travel to see her much loved parents and Michael!<\/span><\/p>\n

A\u00a0 dedicated\u00a0 servant\u00a0 of\u00a0 his\u00a0 Divine\u00a0 Master\u00a0 and\u00a0 also,\u00a0 of\u00a0 his\u00a0 community, John\u00a0 made\u00a0 himself\u00a0 available\u00a0 when\u00a0 ever\u00a0 and\u00a0 where\u00a0 ever\u00a0 required. As\u00a0 such,\u00a0 he\u00a0 was\u00a0 associated\u00a0 with\u00a0 several\u00a0 Community\u00a0 activities\u00a0 and\u00a0 organisations\u00a0\u00a0 in\u00a0 addition\u00a0 to those\u00a0 connected\u00a0 with\u00a0 his\u00a0 Ministry.<\/span><\/p>\n

John\u2019s\u00a0 parents , the\u00a0 late\u00a0 Benjamin Blaze\u00a0 and\u00a0 the\u00a0 late\u00a0 Dorrit\u00a0 Blaze, migrated\u00a0 to\u00a0 Australia\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 1950s\u00a0 with\u00a0 their\u00a0 three\u00a0 sons.\u00a0 John\u00a0 was\u00a0 a\u00a0 teenager\u00a0 then\u00a0 . His\u00a0 brother Carel\u00a0\u00a0 qualified\u00a0 as\u00a0 a\u00a0 Dental Surgeon\u00a0 and\u00a0\u00a0 established\u00a0 himself\u00a0 in\u00a0 Knox\u00a0 City . Carel\u00a0 later\u00a0 became\u00a0 the\u00a0 Mayor\u00a0 of\u00a0 Knox City. The\u00a0 other\u00a0 brother\u00a0 died\u00a0 under\u00a0 tragic\u00a0 circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n

Benjamin\u00a0 Blaze , an\u00a0 English\u00a0 scholar, was\u00a0 a\u00a0 Senior\u00a0 Master\u00a0 in\u00a0 some\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 premier\u00a0 Colleges\u00a0 in\u00a0 Sri Lanka.\u00a0 John, thus\u00a0 had\u00a0 the\u00a0 rare\u00a0 privilege\u00a0 of\u00a0 attending , among\u00a0 others ,\u00a0 two\u00a0 premier\u00a0 Colleges –\u00a0 S. Thomas\u2019 College\u00a0 in\u00a0 Mt. Lavinia\u00a0 and , Royal\u00a0 College\u00a0 in\u00a0 Colombo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike\u00a0 most\u00a0 Sri Lankan\u00a0 migrants here\u00a0 who\u00a0 were\u00a0 concerned\u00a0 with\u00a0 their\u00a0 own\u00a0 welfare\u00a0 John\u2019s\u00a0 parents,\u00a0 Benjamin\u00a0 and\u00a0 Dorrit, were\u00a0 more\u00a0 concerned\u00a0 with\u00a0 the\u00a0 hardships\u00a0 and\u00a0 suffering\u00a0 their\u00a0 Burgher\u00a0 community\u00a0 in\u00a0 Sri Lanka\u00a0 was\u00a0 being\u00a0 subjected\u00a0 to\u00a0 because\u00a0 of\u00a0 the prevailing\u00a0\u00a0 racial\u00a0 tensions\u00a0 there\u00a0 then.\u00a0 Several\u00a0 distinguished\u00a0 Burghers\u00a0 had\u00a0 their\u00a0 employment\u00a0 terminated\u00a0 and\u00a0 the\u00a0 community\u00a0 as\u00a0 a\u00a0 whole\u00a0 was\u00a0 disadvantaged\u00a0 in\u00a0 many\u00a0 ways.\u00a0 Benjamin\u00a0 and\u00a0 Dorrit, together\u00a0 with their\u00a0 sons\u00a0 and\u00a0 a\u00a0 few\u00a0 other\u00a0 Burgher\u00a0 Stalwarts\u00a0 here\u00a0 founded\u00a0 the\u00a0 Australia\u00a0 Ceylon\u00a0 Fellowship\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ( ACF)\u00a0 in\u00a0 1957\u00a0 with\u00a0 the\u00a0 sole\u00a0 purpose\u00a0 of\u00a0 helping\u00a0 Burghers\u00a0 to\u00a0 migrate\u00a0 from\u00a0 Sri Lanka\u00a0 and\u00a0 settle\u00a0 down\u00a0 in\u00a0 Australia. The\u00a0 ACF\u00a0 was\u00a0 the\u00a0 first\u00a0 Ceylon\u00a0 ( Sri Lanka )\u00a0 Community\u00a0 organisation\u00a0 established\u00a0 here\u00a0 in\u00a0 Victoria,\u00a0\u00a0 and\u00a0 possibly\u00a0 through -out\u00a0 Australia\u00a0 then\u00a0 , with\u00a0 helping disadvantaged\u00a0 Ceylonese ( Sri Lankans )\u00a0 to\u00a0 Migrate\u00a0 as\u00a0 its\u00a0 main\u00a0 objective. Aided\u00a0 by\u00a0 some\u00a0 prominent\u00a0 Australians the\u00a0 ACF\u00a0 was\u00a0 quite\u00a0 successful\u00a0 in\u00a0 achieving\u00a0 this.<\/span><\/p>\n

John , with\u00a0 a few\u00a0 breaks\u00a0 between\u00a0 ,\u00a0 was\u00a0 actively\u00a0 connected\u00a0 with\u00a0 the\u00a0 ACF\u00a0 through\u00a0 its\u00a0 67\u00a0 years\u00a0 of\u00a0 service\u00a0 to\u00a0 the\u00a0 Sri Lankan\u00a0 community\u00a0 here,\u00a0 and\u00a0 in\u00a0 Sri Lanka\u00a0 also.\u00a0 He\u00a0 was\u00a0 elected\u00a0 President\u00a0 in\u00a0 1977, 1978 , 1979\u00a0 and\u00a0 1992 . He continued\u00a0 to \u00a0maintain\u00a0 a\u00a0 close\u00a0 interest\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 activities\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 ACF, a\u00a0 legacy\u00a0 left\u00a0 by\u00a0 his\u00a0 parents. In\u00a0 1981\u00a0 John\u00a0 was\u00a0 elevated\u00a0 to\u00a0 Life Membership\u00a0 in\u00a0 recognition\u00a0 of\u00a0 his\u00a0 long, continuous\u00a0 service\u00a0 to\u00a0 the\u00a0 ACF.<\/span><\/p>\n

John\u00a0 has\u00a0 represented\u00a0 the\u00a0 ACF\u00a0 at\u00a0 several\u00a0 important\u00a0 meetings\u00a0 convened\u00a0 by\u00a0 the\u00a0 Federal\u00a0 and\u00a0 State\u00a0 Governments\u00a0 of\u00a0 Australia , by\u00a0 the\u00a0 Migration\u00a0 Department\u00a0 of\u00a0 Victoria,\u00a0 by\u00a0 the\u00a0 Ethnic\u00a0 Communities\u00a0 Council\u00a0 of\u00a0 Victoria,\u00a0 by\u00a0 the\u00a0 World\u00a0 Council\u00a0 of\u00a0 Churches,\u00a0 et al..<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0 his\u00a0 connections\u00a0 with\u00a0 the\u00a0 Sri Lankan\u00a0 ( Ceylonese )\u00a0 community\u00a0 here , John\u00a0 did\u00a0 not\u00a0 confine\u00a0 his\u00a0 interest\u00a0 and\u00a0 activities to\u00a0 the\u00a0 ACF\u00a0 only . He\u00a0 and\u00a0 his parents\u00a0 were\u00a0 founder\u00a0 Members\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 Burgher\u00a0 Association\u00a0 of\u00a0 Australia\u00a0 Inc. , another\u00a0 Sri Lankan\u00a0 community\u00a0 organisation .<\/span><\/p>\n

His\u00a0 pleasant\u00a0 personality\u00a0 and\u00a0 ready\u00a0 smile\u00a0 endeared\u00a0 him\u00a0 to\u00a0 many\u00a0 of\u00a0 his\u00a0 congregation\u00a0 and\u00a0 colleagues. His\u00a0 stentorian voice\u00a0 enabled\u00a0 him\u00a0 to\u00a0 be\u00a0 heard\u00a0 loud\u00a0 and\u00a0 clear. ! They\u00a0 were\u00a0 attributes\u00a0 which\u00a0 served\u00a0 him\u00a0 well\u00a0 in\u00a0 his\u00a0 service\u00a0 as\u00a0 a\u00a0 Minister\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 Church.\u00a0\u00a0 He served in\u00a0 the\u00a0 Church\u00a0 Ministry\u00a0 of\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 several\u00a0 suburbs\u00a0 around\u00a0 Victoria.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0Farewell,\u00a0 John.\u00a0\u00a0 Rest\u00a0 in\u00a0 Peace\u00a0 with The\u00a0 Master\u00a0 you\u00a0 served.\u2019\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
