The library at Adelaide Univeristy is known as the BARR-SMITH LIBRARY.\u00a0 The staff in the \u201cSpecial Collections\u201d within the library over the years have been especially helpful over a long period and were hands-on central in organising the Roberts Oral History Project from the 1980s and subsequently (see<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

But it is by pure chance that I came across\u00a0a document penned in my hand detailing the stock of manuscripts and photocopied material that I had placed within the Special Collections<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013maybe because our home is adjacent to a National Park and within a high fire-risk arena.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let me assure all ye readers that I have been stunned by some of the items that I have collected \u2013some of them original Mss items; with the others being copies. but the main point is that some of these copies reproduce very rare items.\u00a0 Moreover, I find that the range and type of items placed within the realm of the Barr-Smith are quite astonishing. It remains to be seen whether readers and investigators of the past accept that evaluation. I should add that I will be among the personnel delving into some of the data within this stock; but I do not have long to live\u2026..and this stock is there for posterity.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have taken the liberty of highlighting the items I consider important and\/or rare.\u00a0<\/strong>Having done so I invite your caustic and c ritical comment \u2026.. and ask all and sundry to pick up and pinpoint items that interest them. I am afraid I cannot go further and convey copies to their hands. But these responses will indicate to the library and patrons of Ceyloniana which items are the more valuable and even exciting. It is via such mundane steps that research and scholarship move forward and raise eyebrows.<\/span><\/p>\n

Michael Roberts was trained in history and the social sciences at Peradeniya University in Sri Lanka. His initial Ph.D work on agrarian policy took him into intellectual history as well as economic history and political economy. Once he began in the late 1960s to look at the social base of the nationalist movement in British Ceylon, his researches moved him into social history \u2013 this involved a study of social mobility and elite formation. This shift was further promoted by his involvement in the interdisciplinary discussions of the Ceylon Studies Seminar at Peradeniya, in which he was a key founder.<\/span><\/p>\n

His oral history work among administrators and politicians in the late 1960s provided a foundation for his deepening engagement with the phenomenon of nationalism. These researches crystallised in the four-volume\u00a0Documents of the Ceylon National Congress<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>(1977, Dept of National Archives) and the edited anthology\u00a0Collective Identities (<\/em><\/strong>Marga, 1979).<\/span><\/p>\n

When he gained an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship to Germany in 1975-76 and then secured a post at the Dept of Anthropology at the University of Adelaide, this process of transformation continued. Teaching anthropology meant studying the subject and gaining awareness of ethnographic field study methodology. Though he never pursued extensive field studies, his researches in effect involved the deciphering of the life ways of the middle classes of modern Sri Lanka. His\u00a0Caste Conflict and Elite Formation: The Rise of a Karava Elite in Sri Lanka, 1500-1931<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>(1982, CUP) is as much a product of Peradeniya as Adelaide, while\u00a0People Inbetween<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(Sarvodaya, 1989) is about the middle classes of British Ceylon and the growth of Colombo city to hegemonic status.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the ethnic conflict within Sri Lanka sharpened after 1983, Roberts\u2019 familiarity with nationalist ideology stood him in good stead; while his anthropological awareness of human relations and inter-personal subjectivity also came in handy. Thus, his recent writings in the 1990s and 2000s have concentrated heavily on ethnic politics in Sri Lanka, both in the British period (for. e. g. studies of Anagarika Dharmapala\u2019s thinking and the 1915 anti-Muslim pogrom) and in contemporary Lanka (Sinhala nationalist writing and the LTTE\u2019s hero rituals). At the same time he has (a) undertaken an excursion into the pre-British era and analysed the political structure and ideological form of the state of Sinhal\u00c4\u201c in the period 1590s to 1815 and (b) ventured to analyse the politics of cricket in Sri Lanka as well as abroad (see\u00a0Essaying Cricket<\/em>, 2006 Vijitha Yapa Publications). \u2026.
