He excelled at hockey and cricket in particular and went on to represent Ceylon in both sports in the 1950s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/thuppahis.com\/2024\/08\/09\/principles-to-guide-the-choice-of-lankas-cricket-selectors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-49618 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thuppahis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/SCHAFFTER-234.webp?resize=180%2C156&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"elanka\" width=\"400\" height=\"341\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>He became one of the Cricket Selection Committee headed by DWL Lieversz and others in the 1960s.<\/strong>\u00a0He went on to found the JANASHAKTHI insurance company in 1994 \u2014 an enterprise that has been so solid that it gave him time to serve as the Manager of Sri Lankan cricket teams in the decade 2000s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Chandra also took the meaningful step of organising\u00a0<strong>SS \u2018Chandra\u2019 Perera\u2019s unique collection of cricketing memorabilia and cuttings in the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>Janashakthi Book of Cricket<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong>in the year 1999<\/strong>\u00a0\u2026 \u2026\u2026\u2026..<strong>\u00a0a godsend to historians of cricket as well as those involved in social history.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/thuppahis.com\/2024\/08\/09\/principles-to-guide-the-choice-of-lankas-cricket-selectors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-49618 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thuppahis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/JANASHAKTHI-Bk.webp?w=300&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"elanka\" width=\"400\" height=\"341\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">I was involved in writing articles on cricket in the 1990s and 2000s and happened to be in Taunton, UK when the SL touring team led by Mahela Jayawardene played a one-day match at that city on the 21stJune 2002.** I had a long chat with Chandra at the team hotel on that occasion and our friendship matured subsequently when I visited him at the \u201cLighthouse Hotel\u201d off Galle during some ODI matches circa 2003\/04 (dates forgotten).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Set in this background, I can attest to the wisdom reposing within Chandra\u2019s thinking and experience.
