Photos: Petty Officer Bradley Darvill<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Source :\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.defence.gov.au\/news-events\/news\/2024-08-23\/golden-opportunity-sri-lanka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defence.gov.au<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">A deployment to Sri Lanka was like an episode of\u00a0<em>Who Do You Think You Are?<\/em>\u00a0for public affairs officer Lieutenant Jonathan Wills, as he uncovered surprising details of his family history during Indo-Pacific Endeavour (IPE).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cEven though I\u2019ve lived my whole life in Australia, I\u2019m also very proud of my Sri Lankan heritage,\u201d Lieutenant Wills said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cWhen I joined the Navy Reserve two years ago, I never expected one day I\u2019d visit my mother\u2019s homeland for a Defence diplomacy activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThe last time I was in Sri Lanka I was five years old. Now, I&#8217;ve just called my mum from the middle of the street in Colombo that\u2019s named after her dad.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Lieutenant Wills\u2019 mother, Judith, is the daughter of a Sri Lankan police officer. Mrs Wills lived in towns all over the country, following her father\u2019s posting cycle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">She met and married Lieutenant\u00a0Wills\u2019 father, Tony \u2013 then a young, Scottish tea estate manager. Like many other Sri Lankans, they made the decision to migrate to Australia in the late 1960s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The move from tropical Sri Lanka to the outer suburbs of Brisbane was a culture shock for them both.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em><strong>&#8216;The last time I was in Sri Lanka I was five years old. Now, I&#8217;ve just called my mum from the middle of the street in Colombo that\u2019s named after her dad.&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Mrs Wills connected her three children to their Sri Lankan heritage through food, serving up Lieutenant Wills and his siblings&#8217; favourites like egg hoppers, seeni sambol, lamprais and coconut sambol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Ahead of his assignment as a military camera team leader on IPE in Sri Lanka, Lieutenant Wills investigated his family\u2019s service history with help from the Sea Power Centre \u2013 Australia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cI discovered my great uncle, Lieutenant Commander Alan Henricus, served with distinction in both the Royal Ceylon Navy [now the Sri Lanka Navy] and the Royal Australian Navy,\u201d Lieutenant Wills said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cAfter immigrating to Australia in the 1970s, his service in the Royal Ceylon Navy made for a simple transition to the Royal Australian Navy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cAlan was, for many years, the curator of the Naval Historical Collection on Spectacle Island in Sydney Harbour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cHe formed the collection that commemorated Navy\u2019s contribution to the founding, development and maturity of Australia, which then became part of the Australian National Maritime Museum.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">But that was only the beginning of what Lieutenant Wills uncovered during IPE about the depth of his family\u2019s links to Sri Lanka and Australia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cI learned that my grandfather, Ansdale \u2013 Lieutenant Commander Henricus\u2019 older brother \u2013 also had a unique connection to Australia,&#8221; Lieutenant Wills said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cHe represented Sri Lanka in the British Empire Games [now the Commonwealth Games] in Sydney in 1938.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt was the first time Sri Lanka ever competed in international sports. My grandfather won Sri Lanka\u2019s first ever gold medal at those games in featherweight boxing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">After his Empire Games success, Mr Henricus continued to serve in the Ceylon Police Force, rising to the rank of Chief Inspector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>&#8216;There\u2019s a long history of cooperation between the Royal Australian Navy and the Sri Lanka Navy protecting our shared interests in the Indian Ocean region. That\u2019s what IPE is all about.&#8217;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Today, Henricus Avenue stills exists in the suburb of Nugegoda, Colombo, where Lieutenant Wills\u2019 extended family once lived.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cI think my family\u2019s story shows the people links between Australia and Sri Lanka run deep,\u201d Lieutenant Wills said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a long history of cooperation between the Royal Australian Navy and the Sri Lanka Navy protecting our shared interests in the Indian Ocean region. That\u2019s what IPE is all about.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">IPE involves activities with 14 countries across south-east Asia and the Northeast Indian Ocean over the next five months.
