A deployment to Sri Lanka was like an episode of\u00a0Who Do You Think You Are?<\/em>\u00a0for public affairs officer\u00a0Lieutenant Jonathan Wills<\/strong>, as he uncovered surprising details of his family history during Indo-Pacific Endeavour (IPE).<\/span><\/p>\n

tHE WILLS BLOKE 234<\/a>\u00a0Lieutenant Jonathan Wills visits Henricus Avenue, Colombo, which is named after his grandfather.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEven though I\u2019ve lived my whole life in Australia, I\u2019m also very proud of my Sri Lankan heritage,\u201d Lieutenant Wills said. \u201cWhen I joined the Navy Reserve two years ago, I never expected one day I\u2019d visit my mother\u2019s homeland for a Defence diplomacy activity.\u00a0 The last time I was in Sri Lanka I was five years old.\u00a0Now, \u2026. [ today in August 2024] \u2026\u2026 I\u2019ve just called my mum from the middle of the street in Colombo that\u2019s named after her dad.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Lieutenant Wills\u2019 mother, Judith, is the daughter of a Sri Lankan police officer. Mrs Wills lived in towns all over the country, following her father\u2019s posting cycle.\u00a0She met and married Lieutenant\u00a0Wills\u2019 father, Tony \u2013 then a young, Scottish tea estate manager. Like many other Sri Lankans, they made the decision to migrate to Australia in the late 1960s.\u00a0<\/strong>The move from tropical Sri Lanka to the outer suburbs of Brisbane was a culture shock for them both.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018The last time I was in Sri Lanka I was five years old. Now, I\u2019ve just called my mum from the middle of the street in Colombo that\u2019s named after her dad.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Mrs Wills connected her three children to their Sri Lankan heritage through food, serving up Lieutenant Wills and his siblings\u2019 favourites like egg hoppers, seeni sambol, lamprais and coconut sambol.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ahead of his assignment as a military camera team leader on IPE in Sri Lanka, Lieutenant Wills investigated his family\u2019s service history with help from the Sea Power Centre \u2013 Australia.\u00a0 \u201cI discovered\u00a0my great uncle, Lieutenant Commander Alan Henricus, served with distinction in both the Royal Ceylon Navy [now the Sri Lanka Navy] and the Royal Australian Navy<\/strong>,\u201d Lieutenant Wills said.\u00a0 \u201cAfter immigrating to Australia in the 1970s, his service in the Royal Ceylon Navy made for a simple transition to the Royal Australian Navy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlan<\/strong>\u00a0was,<\/strong>\u00a0for many years,\u00a0the curator of the Naval Historical Collection on Spectacle Island in Sydney Harbour<\/strong>.\u00a0He formed the collection that commemorated Navy\u2019s contribution to the founding, development and maturity of Australia, which then became part of the Australian National Maritime Museum.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But that was only the beginning of what Lieutenant Wills uncovered during IPE about the depth of his family\u2019s links to Sri Lanka and Australia.\u00a0\u201cI learned that my grandfather, Ansdale \u2013 Lieutenant Commander Henricus\u2019 older brother \u2013 also had a unique connection to Australia,\u201d Lieutenant Wills said. \u201cHe represented Sri Lanka in the British Empire Games [now the Commonwealth Games] in Sydney in 1938.\u00a0it was the first time Sri Lanka ever competed in international sports.\u00a0My grandfather won Sri Lanka\u2019s first ever gold medal at those games in featherweight boxing.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>After his Empire Games success, Mr Henricus continued to serve in the Ceylon Police Force, rising to the rank of Chief Inspector.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018There\u2019s a long history of cooperation between the Royal Australian Navy and the Sri Lanka Navy protecting our shared interests in the Indian Ocean region. That\u2019s what IPE is all about.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, Henricus Avenue stills exists in the suburb of Nugegoda, Colombo, where Lieutenant Wills\u2019 extended family once lived.\u00a0\u201cI think my family\u2019s story shows the people links between Australia and Sri Lanka run deep,\u201d Lieutenant Wills said. \u201cThere\u2019s a long history of cooperation between the Royal Australian Navy and the Sri Lanka Navy protecting our shared interests in the Indian Ocean region. That\u2019s what IPE is all about.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

IPE involves activities with 14 countries across south-east Asia and the Northeast Indian Ocean over the next five months<\/strong>. IPE ensures Australia has a strong presence in the region and reinforces enduring partnerships and friendships.<\/span><\/p>\n
