While you may be more accustomed to checking your blood\u00a0 cholesterol, understanding and monitoring your triglycerides is\u00a0 equally, if not more, critical for your health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000;\">Triglycerides and cholesterol are different lipids circulating in your\u00a0 blood. Triglycerides store unused calories and provide your body\u00a0 with energy. Cholesterol is used to build cells and certain\u00a0 hormones. It is the type of stored fat called lipid that circulates in\u00a0 your blood and is also stored in fat cells in the body. Triglycerides\u00a0 come from foods, especially butter, oils, and other fats you eat.\u00a0 Triglycerides also come from extra calories your body does not\u00a0 need right away, including sugar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000;\">Triglycerides are a common fat that accounts for about 95 per\u00a0 cent of all dietary fats. Both animal and vegetable fats contain\u00a0 triglycerides. Once digested, triglycerides circulate in the\u00a0 bloodstream to be used as energy by the cells. Any leftovers are\u00a0 stored in body fat to fuel the body between meals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000;\">What are the three main functions of triglycerides?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000;\">Triglycerides serve as a source of energy for the body. They are\u00a0 stored in adipose tissue and can be broken down to release\u00a0 energy when needed. Triglycerides also help to insulate the body\u00a0 and protect vital organs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000;\">While some triglycerides are essential for good health, high levels\u00a0 in your blood can pose serious health risks. They can increase your\u00a0 risk of heart disease and stroke, making it crucial to manage your\u00a0 triglyceride levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000;\">Very high levels of triglycerides are associated with inflammation\u00a0 of the pancreas. People who are overweight or obese often have\u00a0 higher than-normal levels of triglycerides. All these conditions may\u00a0 increase your risk of developing heart disease or of having a heart\u00a0 attack or stroke.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood triglycerides are indeed a type of lipid disorder. This\u00a0 condition can develop independently, with other lipid disorders\u00a0 like high blood cholesterol or low HDL cholesterol, or as part of\u00a0 metabolic syndrome. It&#8217;s important to know that high blood\u00a0 triglyceride levels are exceedingly common, affecting up to one\u00a0 in four adults. Some health conditions, medicines, genetic factors,\u00a0 and lifestyle habits can raise your risk for high blood triglycerides.\u00a0 Taking proactive and heart-healthy lifestyle changes can\u00a0 effectively lower the levels of triglycerides in your blood. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthy levels of blood triglycerides are: Below 150\u00a0 milligrams per deciliter (mg\/dL) for adults; and lower than\u00a0 90 mg\/dL for children and teens (ages 10-19) Borderline high: Between 150 and 199 mg\/dL High: Between 200 and 499 mg\/dL.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000;\">Some diseases, such as kidney disease, diabetes, liver\u00a0 disease, thyroid disease, and obesity, can increase\u00a0 triglyceride levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000;\">Alcohol consumption can cause high triglyceride levels.\u00a0 This is because alcohol contains a lot of sugar and\u00a0 calories, which can elevate triglyceride levels in the body.\u00a0 Consuming large amounts of alcohol can lead to\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000;\">increased VLDL (Very low-density lipoproteins) release,\u00a0 higher flow of free fatty acids to the liver from fat tissue,\u00a0 and impede the body&#8217;s ability to break down fat. If you regularly consume sweet iced tea, regular soda,\u00a0 fruit juice, or sugary coffee drinks, you might take in more\u00a0 sugar than your body can handle. This excess sugar can\u00a0 turn into triglycerides. Therefore, when reducing your\u00a0 sugar intake, remember to include your beverage\u00a0 choices in that effort.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000;\">High-fiber diet\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000;\">Increasing fibre intake has been shown to help adults with\u00a0 overweight or obesity lower their triglyceride levels and\u00a0 improve their overall\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; color: #000000;\">health.
