It is reported that around 15 companies have been shortlisted to develop the 15000 MW electrolyser capacity. These companies are said to be in the various stages of planning stage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Availing\u00a0 the government\u2019s incentives , several green hydrogen projects are in the advanced stage of implementation or under planning in India \u00a0at present in India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Enthused by the government of India\u2019s proactive policies, several global companies have offered to participate in the green hydrogen projects in India<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">U S based Ohmium\u00a0 has already commenced operation at its plant\u00a0 with\u00a0 the capacity of 2000 MW\u00a0 in India .\u00a0 Further, Ohmium is planning to set up an electrolyser and green hydrogen manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu\u00a0 state \u00a0with an initial investment of around Rs.400 crore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">A M Green Ammonia\u00a0 B V has announced that it has reached the final investment decision for its five\u00a0 million \u00a0metric \u00a0tonne green hydrogen project in Kakinada\u00a0 in Andhra Pradesh state to be commissioned in year 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Singapore based\u00a0 Sembcorp industries has announced that it would\u00a0 set up\u00a0 2,00,010 metric tonne per annum capacity of green ammonia plant in Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu state\u00a0 with an investment of Rs.36,388 crore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><u>Weak links in the chain:<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The enthusiasm of the governments all over the world for green hydrogen projects \u00a0and industry response are impressive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">However, there are weak links in the green hydrogen chain that need to be recognized and thought about , before going for massive projects for green hydrogen and green ammonia, which is produced from green hydrogen.\u00a0 Viewing\u00a0 the announcement for the green hydrogen projects\u00a0 and \u00a0proposed huge investments\u00a0 in several countries , one \u00a0gets an impression that the weak links in the \u00a0\u00a0green hydrogen chain do not cause concern\u00a0 and there seem to be \u00a0wishful thinking that the constraints would somehow be overcome and\u00a0 links in the chain would somehow be strengthened\u00a0 !<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><u>Concern regarding production cost of green hydrogen and renewable power<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">As far as the existing technology \u00a0available, the water electrolysis \u00a0\u00a0process for generation of\u00a0 green hydrogen\u00a0 from water\u00a0\u00a0 is power intensive and production cost is higher for the green hydrogen than\u00a0the cost of production of\u00a0\u00a0 grey hydrogen presently made\u00a0\u00a0 from fossil fuel .<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Production cost difference between grey hydrogen produced from fossil fuel and green hydrogen produced from water \u00a0is too wide at the present time<strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Green hydrogen produced through water electrolysis costs\u00a0around\u00a0\u00a0 5 to 6 \u00a0USD \u00a0per kilogramme., while \u00a0Grey hydrogen produced\u00a0 from fossil fuel\u00a0 cost\u00a0 only \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0around\u00a0 \u00a0 2 USD per kilogramme<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">To bring down cost, the cost of the electrolyser which splits water has to be reduced. Possibly, scale of green hydrogen plant capacity\u00a0 can bring down the cost to some extent. Another challenge is the efficiency of the electrolysers&#8211;basically, how much electricity it consumes to produce a kg of \u00a0\u00a0green hydrogen. Technology development efforts to reduce the cost of electrolyser are still underway and is evolving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0Today,\u00a0\u00a0 the power requirement for production of green hydrogen is as high as 55 kWhr per kg of hydrogen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">For green hydrogen, power has to be necessarily renewable power\u00a0 such as solar power and wind power and certainly cannot be power generated from fossil fuel like coal or crude oil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">It is argued that \u00a0the price of solar power and wind power have \u00a0now become much less\u00a0\u00a0 and the low price of renewal power will certainly reduce the cost of production of green hydrogen to some extent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">At the same time, it is necessary to take note about the possible shortfall and lack of consistency in the generation \u00a0of renewable power for the green hydrogen project .As is well known, solar and wind power generation are seasonal and depend on climatic conditions and are not available throughout the day. Further, the capacity utilization of solar power and wind power units are only\u00a0 20%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Can the world \u00a0generate adequate quantity of solar power and wind power in a consistent manner to meet the requirement of large number of green hydrogen projects\u00a0 being proposed?. \u00a0It would be\u00a0\u00a0 ironical , if power based on fossil fuel which causes emission would be used to supply power for green hydrogen projects, \u00a0in the absence of availability of renewable power for a short or long duration for the production of green hydrogen.\u00a0 In such a case, it would not be\u00a0 green hydrogen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">It should \u00a0be noted that the present\u00a0 global \u00a0demand for grey\u00a0 hydrogen is around 96 million \u00a0metric tonne per annum\u00a0 and this quantity of grey hydrogen is sought to be replaced by green hydrogen.\u00a0 Is it\u00a0 not a Utopian expectation ?\u00a0 Even 25% of the global requirement of grey hydrogen can not be replaced by green hydrogen in the next ten years , particularly given the uncertainty involved with regard to production cost of green hydrogen and availability and stability in the supply of renewable energy like solar power and wind power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><u>Transportation issues<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The cost consideration and reliability\u00a0 of transporting green hydrogen from the production centre to the consumption centre is still not very clear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">There is no global consensus yet about the transportation cost of green hydrogen and whether the existing natural gas pipeline can be\u00a0 put to use for transportation of green hydrogen, Further, there are technical constraints related\u00a0 to pipeline transmission. For instance, the embrittlement of steel and welds used in fabricating pipeline is an issue.\u00a0 Further, controlling hydrogen permeation and leaks as well as a reliable and durable compression technology for compressing the green hydrogen at acceptable cost for transportation by pipeline is another issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><u>Is it similar to putting the cart before the horse ?<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">While there are uncertainties with regard to the\u00a0 possibilities and prospects of generating green hydrogen in a cost effective manner , it is surprising that green hydrogen is being hailed as the ultimate solution to overcome the emission issue and prevent climate threat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Millions of dollars are being pumped \u00a0by different countries including India, for the green hydrogen projects , anticipating that the production cost of green hydrogen would be reduced to the level of grey hydrogen and\u00a0\u00a0 renewable power availability and reliability would be improved to the level of need. It is only hope at the preent time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><u>Likely scenario :<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In all likelihood, green hydrogen projects have to be heavily subsidized by countries promoting green hydrogen projects in a massive way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">From green hydrogen , green ammonia is \u00a0proposed\u00a0 to be produced and green ammonia projects are also being planned in a big way. Ammonia is feedstock for the production of several fertilisers such as urea , ammonium nitrate , di ammonium phosphate and so on\u00a0 which are produced in huge quantity in the world.\u00a0 Expensive green hydrogen \u00a0would considerably increase the production cost of green ammonia based fertilisers, which the farmers cannot afford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Certainly, the government subsidy support for green hydrogen\u00a0 and green ammonia would become the compulsive need to sustain green hydrogen \/ green ammonia economy.\u00a0 To what extent , governments can do and particularly, India government can do ,is the moot question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">For example, the European Commission has now given state aid approval for a Euro 998 million subsidy auction scheme put forward by the Dutch government , which seeks to support atleast 200 MW of green hydrogen production capacity.\u00a0 Dutch government will provide grants worth upto 80% of the upfront investment cost of projects as well as a variable premium over a period of 5 to 10 years, in the hope of lowering the production cost of green\u00a0 hydrogen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">While the above move of the Dutch government showcase\u00a0 that the governments around the world are backing green hydrogen as the fuel of the future , at the present time one cannot but conclude that the investment in green hydrogen projects are a calculated risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #800000;\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/elanka-newsletter-sign-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Click here to receive your free copy of the eLanka Newsletter twice a week delivered directly\u00a0to\u00a0your\u00a0inbox!<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GREEN HYDROGEN PROJECTS TO CURTAIL USE OF EMISSION CAUSING FOSSIL FUEL &#8211; IS IT SIMILAR TO PUTTING THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE ?
