This monumental discovery was discussed at an event titled\u00a0 \u2018Sri Lanka\u2019s History Renewed by Dimbulagala Inscription\u2019 organised by\u00a0 the Press Council of Sri Lanka and was attended by Director General of\u00a0 the Department of Archaeology, Professor Thusitha Mendis, Professor\u00a0 Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Professor Ratnasiri Arangala and Dr. Arjuna\u00a0 Thantilage.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The researchers recited anecdotes of how the group of\u00a0 archaeologists had to travel far onto a mountain, reading the\u00a0 inscriptions using a torch at night and drinking water they found in the\u00a0 forest for more than 1.5 months.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The inscription, written in Early Brahmi script, consists\u00a0 of 23 identifiable characters, along with two non-Brahmi symbols, and is\u00a0 believed to date back to the 2nd and 1st centuries BCE, according to\u00a0 Professor Hettiarachchi. Although the text has weathered over time, with\u00a0 portions illegible, the Department of Archaeology used digital and\u00a0 multispectral imaging to reconstruct much of the original content,\u00a0 allowing the stone to come alive and retell its forgotten story from\u00a0 thousands of years ago, This antediluvian inscription believed to be the\u00a0 oldest lithic record of large-scale donations made in the name of\u00a0 Buddhism, or Sasana, highlights the political dynamics of early Sri\u00a0 Lanka, recording details about royal members, donations to Buddhist\u00a0 institutions, and the organisation of lands and resources during the\u00a0 period.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">History, they say, is written by the victors- but this\u00a0 inscription offers a more nuanced view of Sri Lanka\u2019s ancient political\u00a0 landscape. It chronicles the reigns of King Tissa, King Kavan Tissa, and\u00a0 King Saddhatissa, who ruled the region between 137 and 119 BCE. The\u00a0 text further sheds light on the influence of the \u2018Kataragama\u00a0 generation\u2019, a group of rulers from the southernmost part of the island.\u00a0 According to epigraphic evidence, this group maintained connections\u00a0 with the rulers of the Anuradhapura Kingdom, although the specific\u00a0 lineage appears to differ from the mainstream historical record.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The fifth line of the inscription provides details about a\u00a0 ruling family consisting of three generations: a father, son, and\u00a0 grandson who governed a territory called Devamusika. It also references\u00a0 King Gamani Asali and his son Siva, as well as another prince named\u00a0 Suratissa, son of Siva. The Mahawamsa portrays the three younger\u00a0 brothers of Devanampiyatissa, Suratissa and Asela. Suratissa was later\u00a0 defeated by two horse traders named Sena and Guttika.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">At the heart of the inscription lies an unwavering devotion\u00a0 to Buddhism. The stone records an array of donations made to the\u00a0 Buddhist Sangha, underscoring the symbiotic relationship between\u00a0 religion and politics. Kings and nobles alike funnelled land, wealth and\u00a0 resources into these religious institutions. King Tissa, for example, is\u00a0 credited with the allocation of no less than 100 plots of land to the\u00a0 monasteries, a gesture symbolic of religious patronage.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Moreover, the inscription names several financial\u00a0 institutions, including the \u2018atana\u2019 and \u2018mulatana,\u2019 which played a key\u00a0 role in the administration of funds collected for religious purposes.\u00a0 This reinforces the importance of religious patronage in the\u00a0 socio-economic structure of the early Anuradhapura regime.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Aside from political and religious content, the inscription\u00a0 provides critical insights into the economic systems of the time. It\u00a0 outlines the division of land, the collection of revenue, and the\u00a0 distribution of resources to different individuals and groups. In\u00a0 particular, the sixth line mentions an allotment of land (referred to as\u00a0 \u201ctalaka varadi\u201d) and the role of collective family income in supporting\u00a0 religious institutions.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The inscription also lists various professionals and\u00a0 workers, including Brahmins, artisans, horsemen, lapidaries, and slaves,\u00a0 offering a glimpse into the social hierarchy and labour dynamics of the\u00a0 time. Notably, it documents the involvement of slaves in constructing\u00a0 religious facilities and their role in the broader economy.
