This week\u2019s\u00a0TMA\u00a0<\/em>marks the final issue of the election update series before the 2024 General Election (GE).<\/span><\/p>\n

As highlighted in\u00a0the previous issue of\u00a0TMA<\/em>, criticism of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the NPP government continues to gain momentum.[1]<\/a>\u00a0Nonetheless, Sinhala press reporting and TV coverage advanced positive views of the NPP, more than of other political parties. These positive views were also echoed on social media, as reflected by data gathered from the monitoring tool Junkipedia.[2]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

This issue of\u00a0TMA<\/em>\u00a0will unpack\u00a0two dimensions of electoral contestation\u00a0<\/strong>as discerned from the criticism directed at political parties by their political opponents:\u00a0(i) credibility\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0(ii) experience.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Two dimensions: Credibility and experience<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0credibility<\/strong>\u00a0dimension: This is linked to how parties are perceived in relation to democratic governance, eradicating corruption and being accountable and transparent in their conduct.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0experience\u00a0<\/strong>dimension: This is linked to how party members and their orbits are perceived in relation to exposure to governing, subject expertise and overall competence especially in managing the economy and running an effective administration.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. NPP: High in credibility and low in experience<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The NPP is seen as having high credibility but low experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

High credibility:<\/strong>\u00a0The NPP has been gaining credibility as a force that is moving against the political culture of corruption and against the traditional political \u00e9lite who are viewed as part of the past system of corruption.[3]<\/a>\u00a0Its stance against corruption and its commitment to a \u2018cleaner political culture\u2019 continues to resonate with the public. Many seasoned politicians withdrawing from contesting the election is seen as a consequence of the positive change ushered in by the NPP. This has further bolstered the NPP\u2019s credibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

Low experience:\u00a0<\/strong>NPP remains on the defensive with regard to its experience. Political opponents including former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Dilith Jayaweera got lots of media attention on their claims that the NPP lacked the necessary experience and capability to manage the economy and govern effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n


\u00a02.\u00a0<\/strong>SJB and NDF: Low in credibility and high in experience<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The SJB, led by Sajith Premadasa, and the NDF, led by Wickremesinghe, are seen as having low credibility despite having more experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0(i) SJB<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Low credibility:<\/strong>\u00a0The SJB\u2019s credibility has eroded by taking actions that are considered questionable.[4]<\/a>\u00a0For instance, in the lead-up to the 2024 Presidential Election (PE), the SJB was subjected to criticism particularly in relation to the political crossovers it entertained which included certain politicians such as Thilanga Sumathipala, and Nalaka Godahewa.[5]<\/a>\u00a0Overall, this has led to low public expectations regarding the SJB\u2019s commitment to moving against the culture of corruption fostered by the traditional political \u00e9lites.<\/span><\/p>\n

High experience:\u00a0<\/strong>The SJB remains strong in terms of its claim to being experienced. This is due to the perceptions around some of the key figures in the SJB, who are seen as competent and knowledgeable with regard to economic management and administration.[6]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0(ii) NDF<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Low credibility:\u00a0<\/strong>The credibility of the NDF \u2013 a coalition made up of the UNP and a breakaway faction of the SLPP \u2013 diminished when Wickremesinghe associated himself with the SLPP.[7]<\/a><\/span>
\nThe recent involvement of NDF members in corruption scandals, including former Minister Tiran Alles\u2019 (NDF national list candidate) role in the VFS irregularities, has further undermined public confidence in the party\u2019s commitment to combat corruption.[8]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

High experience:<\/strong>\u00a0Similar to the SJB, the NDF is seen as experienced in strengthening the economy and governance. NDF politicians position themselves as part of Wickremesinghe\u2019s team that \u2018rescued the country\u2019, drawing on his reputation and the momentum from the recent presidential campaign to frame their return to parliament.[9]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

3. SLPP, UDV and SB: Low in credibility and low in experience<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The SLPP, the Dilith Jayaweera-led SB and the Ranjan Ramanayake-led UDV are positioned as ranking low in both credibility and experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

Low credibility and experience:<\/strong>\u00a0The SB and UDV are portrayed as having both low credibility and experience. As emerging political parties, they are perceived as lacking experience in governance and economic management. The SLPP is portrayed as lacking credibility as it is widely blamed for the economic crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the dimensions of credibility and experience, the Sinhala media discourse surfaced a\u00a0third dimension<\/strong>\u00a0of electoral contestation, albeit with minimal traction. This dimension focuses on promoting Sinhala-Buddhist cultural interests. Such criticism was primarily directed at the NPP, blaming it for working in the interests of a \u2018separatist agenda\u2019 intending to \u2018federalise\u2019 the country.<\/span><\/p>\n
