SIMILARITIES\u00a0 IN THE PLIGHT OF TIBETANS AND HINDUS IN BANGLADESH – N.S.Venkataraman\"\"<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"N.S.Venkataraman\"\u00a0<\/strong>In the last four months after toppling of Sheik Hasina government on August by a new regime in Bangladesh , attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh\u00a0\u00a0 appear to have become the order of the day.\u00a0 Not a day passes without media reporting that some temples have been attacked or \u00a0some Hindus have been beaten up and so on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hate\u00a0 campaign against Hindus in Bangladesh<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

As it appears now, the hate campaign against Hindus in Bangladesh has been allowed to go on by a\u00a0 government led by Mohammed Yunus , a Nobel prize winner .\u00a0\u00a0 Recently, \u00a0the Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu has been arrested on sedition charges . Later on, two more \u00a0Hindu monks have been arrested .<\/span><\/p>\n

Now,\u00a0 there has been demand that Iskcon , an organisation to promote the Hindu culture and philosophy \u00a0\u00a0operating in Bangladesh, \u00a0should be banned immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n

The above developments\u00a0 clearly indicate\u00a0 that some Islamic extremists harbouring huge animosity against Hindus\u00a0 are \u00a0behind this \u201cexterminate the Hindus in Bangladesh\u201d campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dwindling population of Hindus in Bangladesh :<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

In the year 1947, Hindus constituted \u00a0\u00a0around 23% of the population in Bangladesh. Now,\u00a0\u00a0 the Hindu population has shrunk to 8% , as many Hindus\u00a0 have left Bangladesh with their families\u00a0 to go to India and other countries. \u00a0\u00a0Obviously, the Islamic extremists and some misguided students in Bangladesh do not seem to be \u00a0satisfied with the declining Hindu population trend and want it \u00a0to decline further.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Plight of Hindus no different from Tibetans<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

The ground reality in Bangladesh is that the Hindus live in fear\u00a0 and are \u00a0frustrated and feel helpless.\u00a0 They really do not know as to whether they would get effective and sympathetic support from other countries and from\u00a0\u00a0 civilized people belonging to various religions across the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

In short, the plight of Hindus in Bangladesh today is no different from\u00a0 the plight of Tibetans when China entered Tibet and occupied the country \u00a0around seven \u00a0decades ago . While \u00a0Tibetans resisted the Chinese invasion in \u00a0the then Tibet \u00a0\u00a0that had \u00a0no worthwhile army , China massacred the protesting Tibetans and \u00a0China \u00a0is now sitting pretty ruling Tibet with an iron curtain.\u00a0 Many Tibetans have left Tibet as refugees to other parts of the world including India.<\/span><\/p>\n

The similarity in the plight of Tibetans and Hindus in Bangladesh is that the world \u00a0conscience virtually remain silent and has not taken note of the plight of Tibetans and the plight of Hindus in Bangladesh.<\/span><\/p>\n

Will India deal with Bangladesh Hindus\u00a0 and Tibetans in the same way ?<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

For Tibet, India is\u00a0 a neighbouring country and India is a neighouring country for Bangladesh also. When China occupied Tibet, India did not protest and just remained silent\u00a0 and later on went to the extent of\u00a0 recognizing Tibet as part of China. Certainly, this was a historic mistake on the part of India and history will not forgive India for its recalcitrant attitude towards the plight of Tibetans.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike the case of Tibetans who were attacked by another country namely China, in the case of Hindus\u00a0 in\u00a0 Bangladesh, the attack\u00a0 seem to be \u00a0carried out by Bangladesh government itself\u00a0 by keeping its eyes closed to the attack and vicious campaign\u00a0 against Hindus in Bangladesh by Islamic extremists.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the feeling of helplessness of Tibetans and Hindus in Bangladesh are just similar in extent and intensity.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the case of Bangladesh Hindus too, India has \u00a0expressed only lip sympathy so far, just in the case it did for the suffering Tibetans earlier. Though government of\u00a0 India has protested to Bangladesh government and insisted that it should protect minority Hindus there, government of India appears to be unwilling or hesitant to go beyond this verbal protest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Difference in approach of Muslims and Hindus \/ Tibetans<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

In contrast to the reaction of the Hindus in Bangladesh and Tibetans , one should recall the protests by the Muslims \u00a0\u00a0all over the world when Prophet Mohammed was criticized in some European countries\u00a0 earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n

This shows that Tibetans who traditionally believe in peaceful co existence and are wedded to Buddhist philosophy of non violence and Hindus\u00a0 in Bangladesh \u00a0who too share such \u00a0values like Tibetans, \u00a0\u00a0have become whipping boys, unlike the muslims who\u00a0\u00a0 vigorously defended their cause.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What future now ?<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

The question now is\u00a0 will the future of Bangladesh Hindus \u00a0become as uncertain as the future of\u00a0 Tibetans still living in Tibet\u00a0 and in other parts of the world .<\/span><\/p>\n

In any \u00a0case , United Nations Organisaiton, which is supposed to be a peace keeping body, \u00a0is conspicuous by \u00a0silence and has reduced itself to the level of mere observer ,as far as\u00a0 the plight of Tibetans and Bangladesh Hindus are concerned.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ultimately, it appears that the world would always be controlled by the aggressors , extremists and violent prone groups. This is a sad scenario indeed.<\/span><\/p>\n
