Several studies in recent times have warned against oppressive heat waves\u00a0 happening in the world due to global warming in the coming period. Certainly, there is world wide concern about the climate changes taking place\u00a0 , which are already evident\u00a0 to some extent by heavy rains or hot weather happening unusually\u00a0 and\u00a0 not in tune with the historic seasonal trend.\u00a0 As a matter of fact, the seasonal variations appear to be becoming somewhat unpredictable.<\/span><\/p>\n

Paris Climate\u00a0 Agreement :<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

While recognising that global warming is causing such climate challenges and considering the urgency to tackle the issues , the Paris Climate Agreement committed all countries\u00a0 to collectively strive to keep global temperature from exceeding\u00a0 1.5 degree Celsius or pre industrial times, failing which to certainly keep\u00a0 it below\u00a0 2 degree Celsius\u00a0 increase.<\/span><\/p>\n

Root cause for global warming :<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It is universally agreed that the root cause for global warming and consequent climate crisis is\u00a0 \u00a0the\u00a0 \u00a0extensive use of fossil fuel such as crude oil and coal as well as natural gas to some extent\u00a0 as energy source.\u00a0 The use of crude oil and coal as energy source lead to the emission of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrous oxide, which are\u00a0 global warming\u00a0 noxious gases . During the storage and transportation of natural gas, methane emission take place and methane is a deadly global warming gas.\u00a0 Apart from this, methane emission also take place,\u00a0 as\u00a0 \u00a0 methane is emitted from livestock, manure management, and other agricultural practices.\u00a0 Methane\u00a0 \u00a0emission also take place\u00a0 from landfills and the decay of organic waste..<\/span>
\nCurbing the\u00a0 emission of these noxious gases is the pre condition to prevent global warming.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fossil fuel consumption\u00a0 \u00a0increasing :<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

While several countries have agreed to achieve zero emission level with different\u00a0 time target, the ground reality is that the reduction in the emission of the noxious gases are not happening\u00a0 and on the other hand, they seem to be now increasing.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result of increasing emission of carbon dioxide and other noxious gases ,due to increasing use of fossil fuel, global temperature is increasing. The world Meteorological Organisation (WMO ) has confirmed that year 2024 is the warmest year on record, based on six international datasets.<\/span><\/p>\n

Major producers and consumers of coal such as China, India , Australia , Indonesia are not reducing the production of coal but are\u00a0 increasing the production of coal for use\u00a0 as energy source.\u00a0 In the same way, the crude oil and natural gas producing countries such as Russia, USA\u00a0 and middle east countries and others\u00a0 are increasing\u00a0 the production of crude oil instead of taking steps to reduce<\/span><\/p>\n

Countries like China , India and others are increasing coal production\u00a0 and its use\u00a0 to ensure energy security , as they are heavily dependent on coal as energy source and do not have\u00a0 alternate energy source such as crude oil adequately.\u00a0 In the case of Russia ,\u00a0 middle east countries , USA\u00a0 \u00a0and a few others , crude oil and natural gas production are being increased, to meet the rise in global demand and to ensure that the economic stability of these crude oil, natural gas producing countries are well protected.\u00a0 With regard to the emission of methane\u00a0 from livestock and other sources, nothing worthwhile have been done so far\u00a0 to reduce the level of methane emission.<\/span><\/p>\n

Steps taken so far :<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Steps have been taken to find eco friendly substitute for fossil fuel as energy source by developing green hydrogen, biofuel , renewable energy such as wind and solar power and so on.\u00a0 However, there are issues\u00a0 such as high production cost of green hydrogen which would be much higher than the production cost of grey hydrogen from natural gas now being used extensively ,\u00a0 seasonal variations in the production of renewable power and its low capacity utilisation and\u00a0 so on.\u00a0 Further,\u00a0 \u00a0these substitute energy sources\u00a0 are unlikely\u00a0 to totally replace the fossil fuel energy source\u00a0 in the foreseeable future.<\/span><\/p>\n

Talk in vacuum<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

In such scenario, it is becoming increasingly evident that the tall talk of achieving zero emission at different time lines by various countries\u00a0 seem to be\u00a0 ending up as\u00a0 mere talk in vacuum , as the efforts are not matching the level of need due to technology and other constraints\u00a0 and the use of fossil fuel are not being effectively reduced.<\/span>
\nIn such scenario, it appears that complete elimination of use of fossil fuel to achieve zero emission is a daunting task and it is unlikely to be realised anytime soon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Decision of U S President :<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

In such conditions,\u00a0 U S President Trump , amongst the first executive order after taking over as U S President , signed on January,20th the decision to withdraw the U S from the Paris Climate Agreement of\u00a0 year 2015.\u00a0 This decision of U S President has been severely criticised\u00a0 and many\u00a0 countries have expressed shock . The critics of U S President have called his decision as irresponsible and some critics have termed it\u00a0 totally insensitive to the cause of climate protection. .<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the argument of U S President is\u00a0 that\u00a0 in the Paris Climate Agreement ,\u00a0 the predominant responsibility for\u00a0 protecting climate is vested\u00a0 towards USA and a few other developed countries , while\u00a0 more than\u00a0 80% of the countries\u00a0 in the world\u00a0 are exempted which include major populated countries like China and India from compliance.\u00a0 According to US President , this would cause serious harm to US economy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is the stand of US President appropriate ?<\/span><\/p>\n

Considering the present\u00a0 \u00a0global scenario , US President may be right in his own way from the point of view of USA in exiting the Paris Climate\u00a0 Agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n

The challenging task of protecting the global climate need international effort from all countries . While asking a few countries to cut emission and at the same time,\u00a0 other coal and fossil fuel producing and using countries increasing\u00a0 the fossil fuel production \/ consumption\u00a0 \u00a0will not contribute to reduce emission in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

The U S remains\u00a0 the world\u2019s largest\u00a0 crude oil producer\u00a0 and achieved record production in 2023. The country is also the largest producer\u00a0 of gas and in 2022, became the world\u2019s\u00a0 largest exporter\u00a0 of liquefied\u00a0 natural gas .<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time,\u00a0 it is necessary to recognise that as on 2022, the US has achieved about one third of its 2030 emission reduction goal. In the last weeks of\u00a0 his Presidency ,\u00a0 President Biden increased the US emission reduction commitment to 61%\u00a0 \u00a0to\u00a0 66%\u00a0 of 2005 levels by 2035. The scale of investments by USA in renewable energy has vastly grown since 2017.At present, US is less reliant on coal . U S A has historically supported the EU on\u00a0 anti coal positions in climate negotiation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Certainly, USA is on par with a few developed countries and is much better placed than other countries in putting forth research and development efforts to fine tune and improve the\u00a0 \u00a0eco friendly green hydrogen production technology, optimise the renewable energy\u00a0 production , promotion of algae biofuel etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

Obviously, this means\u00a0 that USA continues to move towards reducing emission and it cannot be faulted on this account.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pot calling kettle black :<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The withdrawal of USA from Paris Climate Agreement should not be misconstrued to say that USA has withdrawn its commitment to reduce global emission,. The argument of President Trump is that all countries are\u00a0 not equally contributing\u00a0 to global\u00a0 \u00a0emission reduction, as coal and crude oil production are increasingly being produced and used by several countries.<\/span>
\nOther countries including\u00a0 coal \/ crude oil producing and consuming countries criticising USA\u00a0 for withdrawing from Paris Climate Agreement is similar to pot calling kettle black.<\/span>
\nPerhaps, the withdrawal of USA from Paris Climate Agreement should make all the stake holders to have a relook on the scenario and ensure that all countries have equal participation and responsibility in the matter,\u00a0 instead of viewing that only a few countries like\u00a0 USA\u00a0 are\u00a0 \u00a0responsible\u00a0 for protecting the global climate. If\u00a0 such relook were to be taken, hopefully, U S President would revise his view and decide to participate in the global climate agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n
