Gamini Dissanayake: A Spearhead for Sri Lankan Cricket-by Navin Dissanayake<\/span><\/h2>\n

Cricket has long been Sri Lanka\u2019s greatest unifier. It is the sport that makes the world see us as more than just a small island\u2014it makes them respect us, remember us, and recognise our strength.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Sri Lanka\u2019s rise in world cricket did not happen by accident. It was built on\u00a0foundations laid decades ago, by leaders who saw the potential in our game long before we had the trophies to prove it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"elanka\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

One of those leaders was\u00a0my father, Gamini Dissanayake.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On\u00a0March 20th, we mark his birth anniversary, and as I reflect on his life, I realise that his greatest contribution to cricket was not just\u00a0securing Sri Lanka\u2019s Test status\u2014it was\u00a0creating the systems, infrastructure, and vision that allowed us to win the 1996 World Cup and stand tall on the international stage.<\/span><\/p>\n

And now, as the\u00a0Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation, it is my responsibility to ensure that his vision is not just remembered, but carried forward.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gamini Dissanayake: The Architect of Sri Lanka\u2019s Cricketing Future<\/span><\/p>\n

Many people know that my father fought for\u00a0Sri Lanka\u2019s Test status in 1981, but few realise that\u00a0he also built the physical and structural foundations of our cricketing success.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\u2714\"\u00a0Sri Lanka Cricket Headquarters at SSC\u00a0\u2013 When Sri Lanka gained Test status, we\u00a0did not even have an administrative home\u00a0for the sport. My father took the lead in establishing the\u00a0Sri Lanka Cricket Board headquarters at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) premises, ensuring that Sri Lanka\u2019s cricket administration had a proper base from which to operate.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\u2714\"\u00a0Asgiriya Stadium Transformation\u00a0\u2013 He believed that\u00a0cricket should not be limited to Colombo. Under his leadership,\u00a0the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy\u00a0was upgraded to\u00a0international standards, becoming\u00a0one of the most picturesque Test venues in the world\u00a0and bringing world-class cricket to a new part of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\u2714\"\u00a0Creating the Pathway for Future Champions\u00a0\u2013 Infrastructure is\u00a0not just about buildings; it\u2019s about\u00a0creating opportunities. He personally ensured that cricketing talent\u00a0from all over Sri Lanka\u00a0was recognised, leading to\u00a0a more inclusive national team that truly represented the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

His belief was simple\u2014Sri Lanka should never be just another cricket-playing nation. We should be a force to be reckoned with.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 1996 World Cup:\u00a0<\/strong>A Dream That Started with His Vision<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0greatest vindication of his efforts\u00a0came\u00a0fifteen years after he won Sri Lanka\u2019s Test status\u2014on\u00a0March 17, 1996, when we defeated Australia to win the Cricket World Cup.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0players, the strategy, the talent, and the execution\u00a0belonged to Arjuna Ranatunga and his team. But\u00a0the foundation for that victory was laid long before.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\u2714\"\u00a0The experience of playing Test cricket for 15 years before 1996 gave us the mental toughness to win.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\u2714\"\u00a0The confidence to take on the world\u2019s best was born from the fight for Test recognition.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\u2714\"\u00a0The belief that Sri Lanka could win on the global stage was a lesson my father instilled in everyone who worked with him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Without that\u00a0long-term vision, Sri Lanka may have still been waiting for its moment of cricketing glory.<\/span><\/p>\n

That is what great leadership does\u2014it\u00a0creates opportunities that allow future generations to succeed.<\/span><\/p>\n

My Role in Continuing His Legacy Through the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation<\/span><\/p>\n

Today,\u00a0Sri Lankan cricket stands at another crossroads.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are a country that has lifted the World Cup, produced\u00a0some of the greatest cricketers in the world, and built a reputation for playing\u00a0brave, fearless cricket.<\/span><\/p>\n

But we are also\u00a0a cricketing nation struggling with inconsistency, administrative challenges, and lost opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n

That is why, as\u00a0Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation, I feel an immense responsibility\u2014not just to honour my father\u2019s work, but to\u00a0continue it in ways that will shape the next era of Sri Lankan cricket.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what we are focusing on at the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\u2714\"\u00a0Developing Young Talent Nationwide\u00a0\u2013 My father believed that\u00a0talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. Through the\u00a0Cricket Foundation, we are working to\u00a0strengthen school cricket programmes, identify\u00a0hidden talent across rural areas, and\u00a0support the next generation of Sri Lankan cricketers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\u2714\"\u00a0Improving Cricketing Infrastructure\u00a0\u2013 While our international stadiums are recognised worldwide,\u00a0our grassroots cricket facilities need urgent investment. We are working to\u00a0equip schools and clubs with better training facilities\u00a0so that young players can develop under proper conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\u2714\"\u00a0Restoring Professionalism & Transparency in Administration\u00a0\u2013 Cricket should always be\u00a0led by those who genuinely care for the game, not by those looking for personal gain. Through the\u00a0Cricket Foundation, we are promoting\u00a0stronger governance, better planning, and a long-term approach to cricket development.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\u2714\"\u00a0Bringing Back the Sri Lankan Cricket Identity\u00a0\u2013 We were once known as\u00a0the most unpredictable, fearless, and entertaining cricket team in the world. That identity must be\u00a0rebuilt from the grassroots up.<\/span><\/p>\n

The game\u00a0gave us our proudest moments as a nation\u2014it must never be allowed to decline.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking Ahead: A Legacy That Still Guides Us<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Thirty years after his passing, my father\u2019s vision still\u00a0lives on in Sri Lanka\u2019s cricketing institutions, in our stadiums, in our players, and in our history.<\/span><\/p>\n

But\u00a0his work is not finished.<\/span><\/p>\n

As we honour him on his\u00a0birth anniversary, my hope is not just to celebrate his achievements, but to\u00a0continue his mission.<\/span><\/p>\n

He fought to put\u00a0Sri Lanka on the map of world cricket.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, it is our turn to fight to\u00a0keep it there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because Sri Lanka\u2019s place in world cricket was never handed to us on a platter\u2014it was earned. And we must always be ready to earn it again.<\/span><\/p>\n

An EDITORIAL NOTE, 20 March 2025<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

One of Gamini\u2019s key achievements in cricket was securing ICC status for Sri Lanka in mid-1981, a complicated political task in the circumstances prevaling then \u2014 a goal achieved with the support of several personnel in UK, especially Lord Michael Naseby. Gamini\u2019s role was recognised by a welcoming Committee at Katunayake airport with a flag held by Sujeewa Kalansooriya (one of Lanka\u2019s U19 squad) and the irrepressible Percy Abeysekera\u00a0 in attendance\u2026\u2026 [ Alas the photo that I have is in Tif & refuses to help \u2026 ].<\/span><\/p>\n
