It continues to baffle scholars and inspire dreamers. Known as the <strong data-start=\"331\" data-end=\"351\">Sakwala Chakraya<\/strong> \u2013 or \u201cWheel of the Universe\u201d \u2013 this ancient carving is far more than just a piece of stone. To many, it could be a key to ancient cosmology, a lost architectural blueprint, or even an extraterrestrial stargate.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"\" data-start=\"852\" data-end=\"900\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong data-start=\"857\" data-end=\"900\">An Ancient Carving Amidst Royal Gardens<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"902\" data-end=\"1278\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Located between the shimmering waters of <strong data-start=\"943\" data-end=\"957\">Tissa Wewa<\/strong> and the spiritual grounds of <strong data-start=\"987\" data-end=\"1014\">Isurumuniya Rock Temple<\/strong>, Ranmasu Uyana (literally &#8220;Golden Fish Park&#8221;) spans 40 acres of lush historical terrain. Amid its ponds and stone pavilions lies a quiet boulder face, upon which is etched one of the most <strong data-start=\"1203\" data-end=\"1243\">peculiar and unclassifiable diagrams<\/strong> in all of South Asian archaeology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1280\" data-end=\"1828\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The <strong data-start=\"1284\" data-end=\"1304\">Sakwala Chakraya<\/strong>, roughly 6 feet in diameter, appears almost mathematical in its precision. It consists of <strong data-start=\"1395\" data-end=\"1423\">seven concentric circles<\/strong> enclosed in a square, intersected by <strong data-start=\"1461\" data-end=\"1480\">geometric lines<\/strong> dividing the formation into quadrants and strips. Inside, you\u2019ll find small circles with cross lines, strange umbrella-like shapes, and even depictions resembling <strong data-start=\"1644\" data-end=\"1664\">marine creatures<\/strong>. Facing this rock is a set of <strong data-start=\"1695\" data-end=\"1717\">stone-carved seats<\/strong>, as if designed for a secret council or meditative observers. Yet, what exactly they observed remains unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"\" data-start=\"1830\" data-end=\"1879\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong data-start=\"1835\" data-end=\"1879\">A Map of the Universe or a Portal to It?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1881\" data-end=\"2237\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The first scholarly documentation of this carving came in <strong data-start=\"1939\" data-end=\"1947\">1911<\/strong>, by <strong data-start=\"1952\" data-end=\"1967\">H.C.P. Bell<\/strong>, then the Commissioner of Archaeology in Ceylon. Bell was captivated by what he called a <strong data-start=\"2057\" data-end=\"2098\">\u201cnaively simple cosmographical chart\u201d<\/strong>, possibly representing <strong data-start=\"2122\" data-end=\"2136\">Mount Meru<\/strong> at its center, surrounded by oceans and cosmic domains \u2013 all consistent with <strong data-start=\"2214\" data-end=\"2236\">Buddhist cosmology<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2239\" data-end=\"2565\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">But not everyone agrees on its religious function. Over the years, <strong data-start=\"2306\" data-end=\"2327\">new-age theorists<\/strong>, UFO enthusiasts, and even some researchers have speculated that the Sakwala Chakraya might be more than symbolic. Add to this the presence of <strong data-start=\"2835\" data-end=\"2856\">Danigala Mountain<\/strong>, Sri Lanka\u2019s so-called \u201cAlien Mountain\u201d nearby, known for its flat top and high frequency of lightning strikes and shooting stars, and the story only gets stranger.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"\" data-start=\"3023\" data-end=\"3072\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong data-start=\"3028\" data-end=\"3072\">A Forgotten Blueprint or Celestial Code?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3074\" data-end=\"3407\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">For those grounded in more academic disciplines, there\u2019s yet another interpretation. Experts like <strong data-start=\"3172\" data-end=\"3196\">Dr. Shereen Almendra<\/strong> suggest the chart might actually be a <strong data-start=\"3235\" data-end=\"3271\">sophisticated architectural plan<\/strong>, possibly linked to the layout of ancient structures like <strong data-start=\"3330\" data-end=\"3342\">Sigiriya<\/strong>, a nearby fortress-palace famed for its complexity and grandeur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3409\" data-end=\"3693\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The seats carved in front of the diagram seem slightly angled toward one another, hinting at discussion and planning. Could this boulder have served as an <strong data-start=\"3564\" data-end=\"3590\">ancient drafting table<\/strong> for visionary architects? Despite Anuradhapura being one of the most meticulously documented cities in ancient Sri Lankan history, no mention of this diagram, its use, or its meaning exists in chronicles or inscriptions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4051\" data-end=\"4380\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">As <strong data-start=\"4054\" data-end=\"4080\">Professor Raj Somadeva<\/strong> points out, this absence makes it incredibly difficult to date or interpret with certainty. Yet he notes that <strong data-start=\"4191\" data-end=\"4233\">early inscriptions from around 250 BCE<\/strong> already referenced terms like <strong data-start=\"4264\" data-end=\"4287\">&#8220;infinite universe&#8221;<\/strong>, suggesting that a profound understanding of space and celestial bodies existed at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"\" data-start=\"4382\" data-end=\"4407\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong data-start=\"4387\" data-end=\"4407\">Mystery in Stone<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4409\" data-end=\"4724\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Whether a <strong data-start=\"4419\" data-end=\"4440\">map of the cosmos<\/strong>, a <strong data-start=\"4444\" data-end=\"4486\">symbolic diagram of Buddhist mythology<\/strong>, a <strong data-start=\"4490\" data-end=\"4509\">building design<\/strong>, or something far more incredible, the Sakwala Chakraya refuses to give up its secrets.
