With more than 15,000 of those injured at work each year costing $60 million in workers compensation claims, it is important employers understand the human and actual cost of inaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">All businesses, from farms to hospitality to construction sites, must ensure they are creating safe working environments. If you&#8217;re an employer, legally you must provide:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">a safe and healthy workplace,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">safe equipment, structures, and systems of work,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">adequate workplace amenities and facilities,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">information, instruction, training and supervision, and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">the opportunity for workers to talk about Work Health and Safety and raise issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">SafeWork\u2019s message to young workers is if you are not sure if a task is safe to do or if you don\u2019t know how to do it safely, the most important thing is to stop and ask someone about it. If you see something that isn\u2019t safe on a worksite and are worried about raising it, you can speak up anonymously using the<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.safework.nsw.gov.au\/advice-and-resources\/speak-up-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Speak Up Save Lives webpage<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Some examples of young people being injured on worksites this year include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">On 22 January, a 19-year-old apprentice plumber was cleaning the gutters of a two-storey building when he slid on the wet roof and fell eight metres,\u00a0fracturing his back.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">On 30 January, a 16-year-old casual farm hand was operating a side-by-side buggy when it struck loose gravel and rolled onto its side, breaking both her legs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">On 10 March, a 21-year-old dogman was struck by the tip of a\u00a0crane boom, crushing his left foot causing traumatic amputation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">On 14 March, a 22-year-old electrician fell six meters from the roof of a double-storey house onto a concrete driveway.\u00a0\u00a0He suffered a broken leg, shattered wrist, broken jaw and facial lacerations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">SafeWork have developed a<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.safework.nsw.gov.au\/resource-library\/at-risk-workers\/young-workers-toolkit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Young Worker eToolkit<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">for employees and workers, containing tips and training materials about work safety rights and responsibilities. There is also a YouTube video about young workers safety<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dEMlYcjqN3U?si=spFKkprp0afeS7dW\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Quotes attributable to Head of SafeWork NSW Trent Curtin:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Workplace incidents can cause life changing injuries, illness and death, and are especially sad when they happen to young workers.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">If you employ young workers or work experience students, make sure you understand your obligations to protect them and support their health and safety at work.
