Yasoja Gunasekera assuming duties last Tuesday <\/em><\/strong><\/span>High Commissioner-designate of Sri Lanka to Canberra, Australia,\u00a0Yasoja Gunasekera<\/strong>, assumed duties last Tuesday (22). Addressing the staff following the assumption of duties, High Commissioner-designate Gunasekera outlined the priorities of the Government of Sri Lanka and noted the long-standing and friendly relations between Sri Lanka and Australia, as well as the way forward to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

She emphasised the need to intensify the promotion of tourism, trade and investment between the two countries and strengthen people-to-people ties.<\/strong>\u00a0The High Commissioner-designate also highlighted the importance of ensuring the seamless delivery of consular services. She underscored the well-being of the Sri Lankan community in Australia as a top priority. She also reiterated the importance of collective efforts by the entire Mission in achieving these objectives.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Sri Lankan High Commission in Canberra, a career Sri Lanka Foreign Service Officer with over 29 years of experience, Gunasekera topped the Sri Lanka Foreign Service Batch of 1996 and has served in various capacities at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, the most recent being as the Additional Secretary for East Asia; Middle East and Africa. She has served as Ambassador to Jakarta, Indonesia and High Commissioner to Dhaka, Bangladesh and established the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou, China. She also served at Sri Lanka Missions in New Delhi, India and in New York and Washington D.C. in the United States of America.<\/span><\/p>\n

High Commissioner-designate Gunasekera holds a Master\u2019s degree in Foreign Affairs and Trade from\u00a0Monash University, Australia, and an LLB Degree in Law from the\u00a0University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. She is a past pupil of\u00a0C.M.S. Ladies\u2019 College, Colombo.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

April 24, Colombo (LNW):<\/strong>\u00a0Yasoja Gunasekera, a seasoned figure in Sri Lanka\u2019s diplomatic service, officially commenced her tenure this week as the country\u2019s new High Commissioner to Australia, marking the start of a fresh chapter in Colombo\u2019s bilateral engagement with Canberra.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a brief address to the staff upon assuming office, Gunasekera reaffirmed the priorities of Sri Lanka\u2019s foreign policy agenda, placing strong emphasis on the deep-rooted and cooperative relationship between the two nations.<\/span><\/p>\n

She outlined a forward-looking approach aimed at invigorating longstanding ties, particularly in areas such as tourism, trade, and investment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Highlighting the growing importance of people-to-people connections, she called for a reinvigorated effort to promote cultural exchanges and closer community engagement, with the well-being of the Sri Lankan diaspora in Australia identified as a central concern.<\/span><\/p>\n

In her remarks, she stressed that effective teamwork within the diplomatic mission would be crucial in delivering on these ambitions and ensuring efficient and responsive consular services.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gunasekera\u2019s appointment comes at a time when both nations are exploring broader economic partnerships, including educational and technological collaborations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Australia remains a popular destination for Sri Lankan students and professionals, and the High Commissioner-designate indicated her intention to build on this momentum to foster deeper cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n

A career diplomat with nearly three decades of experience, Gunasekera is widely respected within Sri Lanka\u2019s foreign affairs circles. She began her service in 1996, having topped her cohort in the Sri Lanka Foreign Service, and has since held several key diplomatic assignments.<\/span><\/p>\n

These include serving as Sri Lanka\u2019s Ambassador to Indonesia and High Commissioner to Bangladesh, and she played a pivotal role in establishing the country\u2019s Consulate General in Guangzhou, China.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her overseas postings have also included stints in India and the United States, where she represented Sri Lanka in both New<\/span> York and Washington, D.C. Within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Colombo, her most recent role was as Additional Secretary overseeing portfolios related to East Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Gunasekera brings to her new post not only extensive diplomatic experience but also strong academic credentials. She holds a Master\u2019s degree in Foreign Affairs and Trade from Monash University in Australia\u2014a link that offers her unique insight into her host country\u2014and an undergraduate law degree from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. She is also an alumna of C.M.S. Ladies\u2019 College in Colombo.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
