This revered day marks several pivotal events in the life of Gautama Buddha\u2014his birth, Enlightenment, and Parinibbana (passing away). Recognizing its profound spiritual importance, the late Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar played a vital role in declaring Vesak as an international religious day, acknowledged by the United Nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"534\" data-end=\"729\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Despite global and local challenges, including international terrorism, Sri Lanka remains steadfast in its commitment to celebrate this spiritually enriching occasion with reverence and devotion.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"731\" data-end=\"772\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><em data-start=\"735\" data-end=\"772\">Temangula \u2013 The Three Sacred Events<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"774\" data-end=\"912\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The term <strong data-start=\"783\" data-end=\"796\">Temangula<\/strong> in Sinhala combines \u201cTe\u201d (three) and \u201cMangula\u201d (auspicious events), referring to the triple occurrences on Vesak:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"913\" data-end=\"1038\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"913\" data-end=\"953\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"916\" data-end=\"953\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The <strong data-start=\"920\" data-end=\"929\">birth<\/strong> of Prince Siddhartha,<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"954\" data-end=\"999\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"957\" data-end=\"999\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">His attainment of <strong data-start=\"975\" data-end=\"992\">Enlightenment<\/strong>, and<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1000\" data-end=\"1038\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1003\" data-end=\"1038\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">His passing into <strong data-start=\"1020\" data-end=\"1035\">Parinibbana<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1040\" data-end=\"1322\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">These three momentous events give Vesak its unmatched spiritual importance. Buddhists in Sri Lanka and countries such as Nepal, India, Myanmar, Thailand, Japan, China, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Tibet, Bangladesh, Maldives, Pakistan, and beyond observe this day with great veneration.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1324\" data-end=\"1358\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><em data-start=\"1328\" data-end=\"1358\">The Birth of the Bodhisattva<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1360\" data-end=\"1703\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Prince Siddhartha was born on a Vesak Full Moon day over 2,600 years ago in Lumbini Park, while his mother, Queen Maha Maya, was en route to her parental home. The newborn prince miraculously walked on seven lotus flowers. Saint Asitha Kaladewala, a sage and advisor to King Suddhodana, predicted the infant&#8217;s destiny as a savior of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1705\" data-end=\"1731\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><em data-start=\"1709\" data-end=\"1731\">The First Salutation<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1733\" data-end=\"1921\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Saint Asitha, foreseeing his own death before the prince\u2019s Enlightenment, paid homage to the child. Witnessing this, King Suddhodana realized his son\u2019s greatness and also bowed before him.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1923\" data-end=\"1945\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><em data-start=\"1927\" data-end=\"1945\">The Renunciation<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1947\" data-end=\"2213\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Despite the king\u2019s efforts to shelter the prince from worldly suffering, Siddhartha encountered the Four Signs\u2014an aged person, a sick person, a corpse, and a monk. These led him to renounce royal life, including his wife Yasodhara and son Rahula, to seek liberation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2215\" data-end=\"2234\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><em data-start=\"2219\" data-end=\"2234\">Enlightenment<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2236\" data-end=\"2423\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">After six years of intense self-discipline, Siddhartha attained Supreme Enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree at Buddha Gaya on a Vesak Full Moon night. He developed the Threefold Knowledge:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2424\" data-end=\"2738\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2424\" data-end=\"2484\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2426\" data-end=\"2484\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong data-start=\"2426\" data-end=\"2455\">Pubbe-nivasanussati Gnana<\/strong>: Recollection of past lives,<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2485\" data-end=\"2550\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2487\" data-end=\"2550\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong data-start=\"2487\" data-end=\"2507\">Catupapata Gnana<\/strong>: Knowledge of beings\u2019 deaths and rebirths,<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2551\" data-end=\"2738\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2553\" data-end=\"2738\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong data-start=\"2553\" data-end=\"2574\">Asavakkhaya Gnana<\/strong>: Destruction of mental defilements.<\/span><br data-start=\"2610\" data-end=\"2613\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Thus, he became the <strong data-start=\"2633\" data-end=\"2652\">Samma Sambuddha<\/strong> (Perfectly Enlightened One), through his own efforts without any divine intervention.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2740\" data-end=\"2757\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><em data-start=\"2744\" data-end=\"2757\">Parinibbana<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2759\" data-end=\"2894\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">On a Vesak Full Moon Poya day, the Buddha passed away peacefully at Kusinara\u2019s Sal Park, emphasizing the impermanence of all phenomena.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2896\" data-end=\"2949\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><em data-start=\"2900\" data-end=\"2949\">Niyata Vivaranaya \u2013 The Assurance of Buddhahood<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2951\" data-end=\"3238\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The assurance of future Buddhahood was granted to Gautama during a previous life as ascetic Sumedha, by Deepankara Buddha. On a Vesak day, Sumedha offered his own body as a path for the Buddha to tread, an act of ultimate devotion that led to the declaration of his future Enlightenment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3240\" data-end=\"3283\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><em data-start=\"3244\" data-end=\"3283\">Yama Maha Perahera \u2013 The Twin Miracle<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3285\" data-end=\"3480\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Exactly one year after his Enlightenment, the Buddha performed the <strong data-start=\"3352\" data-end=\"3374\">Yama Maha Perahera<\/strong>, or Twin Miracle, to humble his proud relatives, displaying supernatural powers that amazed and inspired.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3482\" data-end=\"3525\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><em data-start=\"3486\" data-end=\"3525\">The Buddha\u2019s Third Visit to Sri Lanka<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3527\" data-end=\"3798\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In the eighth year after Enlightenment, the Buddha made his third and final visit to Sri Lanka on a Vesak Full Moon day, at the invitation of Naga King Maniakkhika of Kelaniya. This visit followed his mediation of a dispute between Naga chieftains Chulodara and Mahodara.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3800\" data-end=\"3838\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><em data-start=\"3804\" data-end=\"3838\">The Sacred Footprint on Sri Pada<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3840\" data-end=\"4011\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Accompanied by god Sumana Saman, the Buddha visited <strong data-start=\"3892\" data-end=\"3918\">Samantakuta (Sri Pada)<\/strong> and left his sacred footprint, now a venerated pilgrimage site for generations of Buddhists.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4013\" data-end=\"4054\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><em data-start=\"4017\" data-end=\"4054\">The Origin of the Sinhala Community<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4056\" data-end=\"4325\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Coinciding with the Buddha\u2019s Parinibbana, <strong data-start=\"4098\" data-end=\"4115\">Prince Vijaya<\/strong>, the forefather of the Sinhala race, is believed to have landed in Sri Lanka on the same Vesak day.
