In ancient Ceylon\u2014modern-day Sri Lanka, historically known as\u00a0<b>Hela<\/b>\u2014our visionary engineers, under the guidance of dedicated monarchs, developed one of the world\u2019s most sophisticated irrigation systems. This hydraulic civilization demonstrated foresight, engineering skill, and ecological balance, creating a sustainable network that supported thriving communities and abundant agriculture for centuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The fundamentals of such water-related engineering marvels are highlighted in the following article on Lankaweb.\u00a0(<a id=\"m_1452718860248433274OWA6a47043c-190f-3091-8e33-ef1618377188\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sunilwimalawansa\/recent-activity\/all\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sunilwimalawansa\/recent-activity\/all\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1748590366787000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0PTN4RfmahtK5usg2YaPu6\">https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/<wbr \/>sunilwimalawansa\/recent-<wbr \/>activity\/all\/<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">My tribute goes to the invaluable insights of pioneering irrigation engineers such as Joseph Needham and D.L.O. Mendis, along with dedicated professionals like Mr. Godfrey de Silva\u2014former Chief Irrigation Engineer in Kandy and later Chairman of the Mahaweli Authority\u2014and other pragmatic engineers who deeply valued the nature and beneficial coexistence inherent in Sri Lanka\u2019s ancient hydraulic heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">From these dedicated experts, I learned a great deal about water management. I recognized the brilliance and sustainability of centuries-old water systems, which emphasize ecological harmony, community-driven management, and long-term resilience.<\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Through the Peradeniya Exploris Club (UEC) that began in 1971, we organized hiking, climbing, canoeing, and cycling trips virtually every weekend for its members and outsiders. In an unrelated incident to the main topic here, in 1973, we planned a trip along the Maduru Oya, from south of Mahiyanganaya to Manampitiya bridge, via thick jungle, using a partly inflatable\u00a0rubber dinghy (named Crocodile). However, despite reports of ample water (as from pundits\u00a0in Colombo), there was little water in the Oya, insufficient to ride. Consequently, we were forced to carry the raft for the entire journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">This unexpected challenge turned into a blessing in disguise: we spent two nights in the jungle, witnessing an abundance of wildlife, including elephants, bears, pythons, wild boar, and numerous facilitating bird species that we do not see in our hometowns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Additionally, we discovered a well-crafted, intact &#8220;sorowwa&#8221; (sluice) hidden in the thick jungle (made up of\u00a0slabs of granite\/stone and bricks), long before any surveys were conducted for a previously destroyed dam (the well remnant of\u00a0ancient hydraulic sluice) in the path of Maduru Oya, a few miles before the river ended. We spent a couple of hours there, walking through the original bund and enjoying the wildlife, including a herd of elephants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amazinglanka.com\/wp\/maduru-oya-ancient-sluice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-153480 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/amazinglanka.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/DSCF61571.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"A COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES - BY RODERIC GRIGSON\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Image Source :\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/amazinglanka.com\/wp\/maduru-oya-ancient-sluice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amazinglanka.com<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The above sluices were covered with bushes, but we were able to creep into this sluice at that time.\u00a0<i>We noticed that several articles written since 1980, state that, &#8220;at the time,\u00a0<\/i><b><i>neither\u00a0<\/i><\/b><i>the government nor the designers had been aware of the existence of an ancient dam and a sluice structure of this nature, about 100 m downstream<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Yet, we witnessed that a few years prior to (even) planning of the Maduru Oya had begun. As we typically do with new findings during our explorations, we informed the archaeology, irrigation (via Mr. Godfrey de Silva), and wildlife departments of our exciting discoveries, just as we had with another discovery, such as novel inscriptions, in the North Central Province.
