A first of its kind novel in Australian publishing has made the shortlist for this year\u2019s Miles Franklin award, along with two first-time nominees, two previously shortlisted authors and two-time winner Michelle de Kretser.<\/p>\n

Winnie Dunn\u2019s debut\u00a0Dirt Poor Islanders<\/i>, which draws on her own experiences of growing up as Tongan-Australian, has been nominated for the prestigious award, along with\u00a0Chinese Postman\u00a0<\/i>by Brian Castro;\u00a0Compassion\u00a0<\/i>by Burruberongal author Julie Janson; Ghost Cities<\/i>\u00a0by Siang Lu;\u00a0Theory & Practice<\/i>\u00a0by Michelle de Kretser and\u00a0Highway 13<\/i>\u00a0by Fiona McFarlane.<\/p>\n

The shortlist, the judging panel said, celebrated writing that refuses to compromise. \u201cEach of these works vitalises the form of the novel and invents new languages for the Australian experience,\u201d they said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The subjects across the shortlist also reflect the breadth of the Australian experiences. Castro\u2019s\u00a0Chinese Postman<\/em>\u00a0is about an elderly Chinese migrant reflecting on his life;\u00a0Theory & Practice<\/em>\u00a0by de Kretser is set in the academic scene in the 1980s; Lu\u2019s\u00a0Ghost Cities<\/em>\u00a0blends current-day Sydney and Chinese mythology;\u00a0Compassion<\/em>\u00a0is a fictionalised account of one of Indigenous author Janson\u2019s ancestors, and the short stories in McFarlane\u2019s\u00a0Highway 13<\/em> are loosely pegged to a serial killer based on Ivan Milat.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dunn\u2019s debut\u00a0Dirt Poor Islanders<\/i>\u00a0is the first Tongan-Australian novel published in Australia. She was \u201cvery shocked\u201d to have been nominated, she said. \u201cI\u2019m still \u2026 reeling from it! It\u2019s amazing and I feel really lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dunn, who grew up in western Sydney\u2019s Mount Druitt, challenges reductive and popular racist representations of the Tongan-Australian community in her novel, the judges said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDirt Poor Islanders\u00a0<\/i>is a tender and arresting story of a young protagonist \u2026 whose life in Western Sydney is framed by her experience as a Tongan Australian,\u201d the panel said.<\/p>\n

The 29-year-old had always wanted to be a writer, and after university, honed her skills at Sydney\u2019s Sweatshop Literacy Movement in Sydney, an organisation that provides research, training and mentoring for emerging and established writers from Indigenous and non-English-speaking backgrounds, where she is now general manager.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

She was partly driven to write her semi-autobiographical novel because she had rarely seen herself, or her community, reflected in mainstream culture.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only real representation of Tongan-Australians in mainstream media is Chris Lilley\u2019s\u00a0Summer Heights High<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Jonah from Tonga<\/i>\u00a0as a kind of brown-faced minstrel,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Despite Australia\u2019s multiculturalism, and Tonga being one of our closest neighbours, Pasifika culture doesn\u2019t get much creative representation, Dunn said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe only make up less than one per cent of the population, but we are very visible in terms of football, manual labour and in art, such as rap group Onefour, so we do add to the cultural face of Australia. Being nominated for the Miles Franklin is a real boost to my community.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Each of the shortlisted authors receives a $5000 prize, and the winner, who will be announced on July 24, receives $60,000.<\/p>\n
