How Aussie soprano Danielle de Niese became a real-life Lady of the manor – By Paul Ewart<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

For many, the idea of living in a English country house steeped in centuries of history is the stuff of fairytales \u2013 a fantasy confined to the pages of a storybook or perhaps a Hallmark movie. But for Australian soprano Danielle de Niese, it’s a reality.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The opera star calls renowned English estate and opera house \u2013 Glyndebourne \u2013 home, a 500-year-old manor in East Sussex.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now holding the unique title of chatelaine of Glyndebourne, de Niese\u2019s path to Lady of the manor began 20 years ago with a performance at Glyndebourne \u2013 home to the eponymous opera festival.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI made my Glyndebourne debut in 2005,\u201d the opera legend \u2014 who is currently back in Australia to star in Opera Australia’s new production of Carmen \u2014 told realestate.com.au.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing I love most about the house is how normal it feels \u2014 it really is, to us, a family home. A home filled with love and all our family memories. Actually it\u2019s often when I see the house in a photo shoot (when I\u2019ve been shot at the house for magazines) that I suddenly look at what is \u2018my home\u2019 and often remark: \u2018gosh the house really looks great doesn\u2019t it?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Melbourne-born performer first found fame at the age of nine when she became the youngest winner of TV show ‘Young Talent Time’ in 1988.<\/span><\/p>\n

Soon after, she relocated to LA with her family where she became a regular guest host of the TV show, ‘L.A. Kids’, for which she won an\u00a0Emmy Award\u00a0at the age of 16. It was around the same age that the go-getter made her professional opera debut \u2014 a debut that would see her become one of the world\u2019s most in-demand singers and be dubbed \u2018opera\u2019s coolest soprano\u2019 by the New York Times Magazine.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was during her Glyndebourne debut as Cleopatra that she first crossed paths with Gus Christie \u2014 the grandson of the Glyndebourne opera house founders, John Christie and soprano Audrey Mildmay. Their connection blossomed amidst the artistic grandeur of the estate, leading to their marriage in 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNow, when I\u2019m performing here it\u2019s the shortest commute of my life!\u201d joked the soprano.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nestled in the English countryside, the 500-year-old property has been in Christie family for almost 200 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The manor house has a rich history,” she explained.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the late 1800s, William Langham Christie made many changes to the house.\u00a0 He added a brick extension that hid the previous 17th-century facade, he had the architect Ewan Christian create new bay windows and add decorative brick and stonework, which has given the house the current Jacobean appearance you see now.\u00a0So, the house has gone through many evolutions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Though boasting an impressive 25 bedrooms and a remarkable organ room, perhaps Glyndebourne\u2019s most distinctive feature is its in-house opera house \u2014 a structure that has evolved dramatically from the original 1930s 300-seat theatre to an 800-seat one in the 1970s and, most recently, a world-class 1,200-seat theatre in 1994.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\u201cPart of the ethos of Glyndebourne is that the experience is like being in a hive of activity,\u201d said de Niese.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe provide a creative oasis for our artists to do that. At the house we host all the creative teams who are producing the shows here each summer: conductors, directors, set and costume designers, choreographers, language coaches \u2014 they all stay with us in the house as our guests for the duration of their contracts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, with large stately piles comes large responsibilities \u2014 especially when it comes to preserving the heritage of the structure.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have done some small things to the house’s interior but it\u2019s a Grade II-Listed property so there are restrictions,\u201d she said. \u201cThe house has already gone through so many iterations over the centuries.”<\/span><\/p>\n

One notable change overseen by the couple was in 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We decided to return the front of the exterior of the house back into a private garden,” she explains, describing the project to move bus parking and create a more fitting, smaller road.<\/span><\/p>\n

But behind the grandeur and the opera fanfare is the fact that Glyndebourne is a family home \u2014 albeit a grand one.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Many of our artists often tell us how the house is so wonderful and grand but feels truly warm and cosy like a family home,” explained the performer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe also live in the house as well as a family, so we have parts of the house that are private for the family \u2014\u00a0 we have a\u00a0 family kitchen and living area filled with the kids toys and the like.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And for those who might wander in unexpectedly? “One thing that is always quite funny is to remember we are attached to an opera house!” she laughed, recounting a time they found a man sitting in their private hall reading a program, unaware he had taken a wrong turn from the public areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, 16 years after she first relocated to the famed property, the 46-year-old is understandable proud of her part of Glyndebourne\u2019s legacy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, now as a member of the Christie family, my connection to the place is even deeper,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGlyndebourne was created to make high-quality opera in the UK and to bring audiences to not only to opera, but into the beautiful English landscape. It was the family\u2019s passion for opera that led to its founding and now, even three generations later, it really feels like a family\u2019s labour of love. It\u2019s an incredible legacy to be a part of both artistically and personally.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
