{"id":157094,"date":"2025-08-20T03:38:45","date_gmt":"2025-08-20T03:38:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/?p=157094"},"modified":"2025-08-21T03:36:24","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T03:36:24","slug":"a-trek-down-memory-laneby-beverley-pinder-oam-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/a-trek-down-memory-laneby-beverley-pinder-oam-11\/","title":{"rendered":"A TREK DOWN MEMORY LANE\u2026by Beverley Pinder OAM"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>A TREK DOWN MEMORY LANE\u2026by Beverley Pinder OAM<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Three Melburnians recently took time to visit their <em>Alma Marter<\/em> to celebrate its 125<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Sharron Paulse (Neydorff), Marina de Niese (Fredericks) and I were last together at St Lawrence\u2019s Convent, Wellawatte, when we were 12 years of age\u2026nearly six decades ago &#8211; parting ways when my family migrated to Australia..<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">And, this time around, it is the 125<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the school we all loved so much. \u00a0A school that brought us together and nurtured our spirit and fellowship enabling a solid platform for the friendship we still hold today. Although we live several kilometres apart in Melbourne, we still catch up and share fond memories alongside our other pal, Sally Grero (Machado) who last year visited Sri Lanka with me to launch my book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The highlight of this trip was a catch up with the St Lawrence\u2019s Past Pupils Committee headed by newly-elected President Fiona Crusz-Impett, who was keen to again meet having been introduced to me last year at the Sri Lankan launch of my autobiography: <em>Pride without Prejudice.<\/em> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Reflecting on our early education we recalled with fondness the nuns, the teachers, our sporting prowess (or lack of it!) and of course the solid foundation we each received with discipline and rigour that gave us every opportunity to be the best at what we chose to do in our lives many thousands of kilometres from the land of our birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">For me this trip held particular importance as it gave me an opportunity to meet the three St Lawrence\u2019s students whose education I am sponsoring, For Sharron it was a chance to reconnect with a school where she started her teaching career all those years ago. And for Marina, the chance to visit Jaffna and Delft Island places that have held her fascination since meeting her late husband, Stephen de Niese.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The years have not diminished the love we each have for our <em>alma mater<\/em> and indeed we continue to support the Past Pupils\u2019 Association back home in Melbourne. As well, I will endeavour to support Fiona\u2019s great work over the next 12 months \u2013 on home-ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Marina, who left Colombo when she was 15, reflected: \u201cThis is such a rewarding experience being back at the old school with Sharron and Beverley. They were great times and I always knew I had Beverley watching out for me.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Sharron exclaimed: \u201cOften we talk about adventures such as these and never go through with it \u2013 but this is the very best way for true friends to connect heralding that connection and, our spirit, maintaining solid friendships throughout our lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In recounting the years past I am delighted that these two friends joined me on this trip. \u201cSuccess in life only comes when you share experiences and gain strength from each other.
